what are some anime where the main plot is very basic (or could be something really weird which you never thought would work like 100 girlfriends) but executed really well.

Well, I think Date a Live and Senran Kagura have an enjoyable plot.

First one that comes to mind is Keep Your Hands Off Eizouken! A large disparity between expectations based on reading the premise and synopsis on paper versus actual execution.

Assumed at first it would just be a rather matter-of-fact treatment of its subject matter and also like and almost interchangeable with any other all-girls school club anime, but didn't remotely expect for them to get as conceptually and visually creative as they did with it, as well as brave in having the main girls not used as an object of fanservice, be conventionally attractive, or necessarily even overtly likable to the audience.

Dainanaoji (7th Prince). It is only the second reincarnation anime in my top 60-70 of 2021-2025.

@WatchTillTandava Top tier response, top tier anime.

Its not exactly average but Demon slayer's plot is quite simple yet executed brilliantly.
If you enjoyed the time you wasted, then its not a waste of time.

I wont use words like Generic or Average, but I will use the word 'simple'. The Dragon Ball manga is the greatest 'simple' story there is. It is an absolute masterpiece. One of its many great strengths is its simplicity.

The execution of Kantai Collection's plot is very excellent. I won't go into specific details of its plot, but the fleet girls are absolutely adorable.

Kimi ni Todoke. The main plot is just a simple high school romance and friendship, but the execution makes it stand out from other anime with the same premise, especially shoujo ones.

Dragon Quest: Dai no Daibouken. It's adventure + let's defeat the demon lord but so well executed with excellent cast.
Imagine how boring this world would be without Japan - a comment at youtube

Most recently, Medalist.

It's the typical sports underdog premise, yes, but it's so lovingly and thoughtfully written, especially the two main characters, with solid visuals and performance sequences.

Sometimes simple is best, and it's not necessarily an easy thing to pull off.

Also a fan of Demon Slayer and Kimi ni Todoke which were already mentioned.

@_ohara first of all - fuck you for making me want to rewatch DB-DBZ right before uni exam season.

Second - you are absolutely correct in your assertion.

@WaterMage Indeed, I was nervous the first time I decided to watch it. It's a harem and I've seen another cosplay anime which is My Dress up Darling.

But this series was really great and stands on its own. Despite also being about cosplay, it tells it own story differently and does it all with heart.

@BirdyTheMighty wha, you don't do last minute studying. I would watch what I want as long as the exam isn't tomorrow lol

A Silent Voice. School bully going on a redemption path isn't a groundbreaking premise, but it managed to touch viewers.

I'm glad Kimi ni Todoke was already mentioned twice on this thread. It is a series that rises above the mundanity of its premise.

Girls und Panzer was the first title that came into mind that fits this criteria.

@Sainda I also thought it will be just more degenerate My dress up darling. But now I say it's better. Marin is fine and all but Ririsa>>

Castle in the Sky, though part of the reason that it seems generic is because everyone copied it.

From the latest, Mashle. The second season fell down a bit and started exposing its weaknesses, but the first season was a perfect example of simple things done good.

Gunbuster is a good example of this. The plot is really average, but the execution is amazing.
