depends on the surname. english names with japanese surnames are ok but japanese names with english surnames...I'm not sure. (example anna tsuchiya-fine Sasuke Smith- XD)
I'm afraid my kids are going to have relatively normal names, i don't want them to go through hell when they get to school ( try calling them something like Orochimaru Jones and I'm sure they'll get the crap beaten out of them)
My best friend is pregnant and she is considering calling the baby Raistlin (wizard from D&D). O.o
and the worst bit is that if you search for Raistlin in photobucket there is tons of baby pictures...XD

You'd have to be a rather opportunistic and selfcentered parent to impose your appreciations on a child in such a structural manner. Unless it's a name that has a very domestic sound to it, along with a generalized meaning that pertains to more than just an anime character, I find it a daft thing to do.

Well said.

There's no way I'll ever have children intentionally, but if I did have one I certainly wouldn't saddle him or her with any sort of odd name.

It depends on the name in question...Naming anyone Alucard or Ergo Proxy would be...silly at best...
On the other hand, names such as Edward (FMA), Seras/Ceras (Hellsing), Teresa (Claymore) or Saya (Blood+) are quite normal, and should therefore not be a problem...

In my country calling a person spike or mugen or rukia or satsuki etc is considered waaaaaay bizarre for naming.

i probably won't... though, i'm charmed with the idea XD

p.s. i do have a cousin named Mai, but i don't think its japanese related.

No you wouldn't... Most people call their child names that they themselves like not because they think their child is going to like the name, a lot of people don't even like their own name. I mean yea it would be out of order if you called it the name kettle or something like that... But a real name would not be a self-centered thing to do at all. The child won't be riddiculed for any name you give it especially not if it's foriegn... Would you ridicule a Japanese kid for having a japanese name? No. Well then. The kid is only going to be as bullied as everyone else. All children get bullied and even people with normal names like Richard 'Dick' get bullied for their names.

One of the staff at my schools surname is Kurr. His first name is Wayne... I cant imagine what it may have been like growing up as "Wayne Kurr" XD...

And no, i wouldnt name my children on some anime charecter, for various reasons. But the main one probably being because it would not match at all with the surname, as stated somewere before in this thread >,>...

I think it's natural to want to name your child/ren after something or someone that means a lot to you, even if it's not a real person. People name their kids after characters from books and movies and plays, why not anime?

Still, I wouldn't do it. Nobody I like enough. Or at least nobody I'd want to bring to mind every time I said my child's name. :P

see, naming a japanese child a japanese name is fine. naming a child from another background with a japanese name would be...weird.

then again, Nicholas Cage did name his kid "Kal-el"

well, some anime character's names don't sound as extremely japanese as others. A kid named "Spike" here really wouldn't be too weird. Kyon...hmm...haha maybe. Yuuichi no. Mugen would be interesting really. Jin isn't too bad, I know a few ppl named Jin. Konata...not really.

so yea, it's all about the culture ur in, and seeing if the name fits.

Coming from the guy who thinks it's self-centered to call their child something that they like?
*NEWSFLASH* People don't call their children things they don't like, doing so would be opportunistic...*NEWSFLASH*
It's not self-centered at all. Also you didn't even hyphenate self-centered, so don't try to act all smart. The hyphen is that key two buttons left of the backspace key. You don't even need shift to activate it. Now stop spamming the thread. I asked if anyone would do it... Not how ethical the minorty think it would be. It's no more self-centered than calling your child Sabrina knowing fully that someone is going to point out she's a witch...

I guess the majority of people wouldn't name their child an anime name :D

i happen to really love a lot of japanese names, so yes absolutely. the name haruka, which i got from watching sailor moon, is still on my list for names of my future children (yes, i keep a list), but it didn't have much to do with the character as much as i simply really like the name. and i don't see anything wrong with naming someone something outside their ethnicity/nationality, as long as it has the right sound to it combined with the middle and last name.

but this could all just be because i come from a long line of weird names (my dad, for example, is colombian and named vladimir), so its normal for me.

HAHAHAH

On the other hand, I would, but I wouldn't.. It all depends on the name and such.... Eh, I think depending I would or wouldn't.. Can't think of one at this moment. As everyone has stated, obviously if I was like "oh yeah, my kid's named L" that would be beyond stupid.
But I don't know..
HAHHA, I could have L, Mello and Near! *DIES FROM LAUGHTER*
That would be good goldfish names, though I would want some certain 2 fish to die..... *twitch*

Anywho.. I think I totally messed up this post... blarg.

Basically, I see no problem about being influenced by an anime in naming your children, except I think we can all agree some names would be stupid.

lmao @ raistlin and photobucket pictures...but i agree with this fully...i think it's a bad idea to name your kid something that's obviously japanese especially if he/she isn't asian and living outside of japan...imagine the playground where other kids bully your child because of his/her name...your child will end up having a pretty rough childhood, which no parent would want...you might as well name your kid "Please Kick My Ass" cause that's what the other kids are gonna do...

i also can't imagine the conversation with your child if he/she asks how you named them...

Even if I were to have more (hahaha... NOT LIKELY!!!), I would say no. I would my pets (I so want to get a dog and name it Shigure or a cat and name it Fye), but not my kids. Seishin probably would, possibly (she has already done it with her pets... she has a puppy named Hitomi, a dog named Kyo, and a pot-bellied pig named Sakura).

My partner is a teacher, so he is really against weird names for kids because he is quite aware of what happens to them in school. They had a kid called Wayne King...XDDDDDD. He really believes in name determinism as well, so i had to change the names i've chosen since i was 16 or so :( but now i think is for the better. If I had called my girl Erszebeth Ligeia she would had had tons of problems in life, starting with no one but her being able to spell her name. XD so she'll be called Elizabeth Ligeia now. I'm sure she'll thank me for that later in life (i hope :D). and how would i explain to her i named her after erszebeth bathory...XD

LOL. My kid sister called our cat Mokona.
Anyways, not every anime character soudns particualrly Japanese, you can always name your child/ren after an anime character with other factors. Like Ed/ward. THen again now that i think about it, there is quite a limited amount.

Personally, if i did have a child i would go around the bends by calling her(assuming that she's a girl) Chun Hyang, Anime and gd enough for my background

Man, to name one of your kids after an Anime character you like still means that at that ripe old age you are still an Otaku to the end. I'll give props to someone that does that but in the end will your kid like being harassed because his name came from a cartoon show? You gotta think of the kids well being, but if you lived in Japan where most Anime names are common, then that wouldn't be an issue.

Now a days people are giving their kids many odd names. As time changes so do people and Name giving is basically a sense of style in ones new urban culture. If you are from a Christian or Jewish family you'll most likely be call your son David, John, or Robert and your daughter Mary, Vennesa, or even Beatris. The thing is you give a name suited to you the life style of what your kid will grow up too.

Thing is, forget the aspect of necessarily it being _from_ an anime, it's more like you find a name you like, from any source or thought.

Naming your kid Naruto would be weird but naming it a common (japanese) name would be fine as long as it's something that could be passed as more or less common in ur own area.

I mean for example, "okay" names could be, Mai, Spike(could be =P), Faye, or any more japanese related names.

Odd ones ofc would be uncommon names from very profiled animes, or a Very japanese name in a culture where it would be very odd.

Me, I prob won't use any name from an anime though =P just throwing out some thoughts

I remember a story in High school about some kid named Vegeta O_O at the time i thought it was the AWESOMEST name ever xD;

I've thought about naming my kids after anime characters... but i'd rather string together a name that has a good meaning.

as for pets:
I had a tank full of random fish and i named them all after the advent children crew,
i had 9 of them: Cloud, Aerith, Tifa, Vincent, Kadaj, Yazoo, Loz, Sephiroth, and Rufus

believe it or not, Aerith died first... at the hand of KADAJ! @__@;; kadaj was the most agressive one i had O_O;;
Yazoo and Loz were originally Kiros and WardII cause my first Bettafish was Laguna <3

;__; after they all died i gave up on fish @__@

While I dont think I could bring myself to give a child of mine a name from an anime, I would however give a middle name from one of my MMORPG characters. I have always liked the thought of making my first daughters middle name Elvel.

I would....I mean i wouldnt necessarily name them after the character (although that seems cool to me X3), i would name'em a name that i liked....like...i dunno, i really really like the name Shizuru or shizuma....it just sounds nice to me ^_^; but of course thats just my opinion (and my kid might kill me for naming them that when they're older XD)....and I probably wouldnt give them a first name of an anime character, but thier middle name would seem alright^__^....

Ehh, most Anime names are common Japanese names, so no, i wouldn't most certainly name my kid a Japanese name. I like German names since it would fit in more with what my kids would look like (Blonde, Blue eyes) if they get lucky with daddy's genes anyway :p

But yeah, Japanese names on a Caucasian? lol hardcore. I wouldn't subject my child to such an act, lest I want him to be an outcast.
