How well do you remember the anime you watched as a child, or at least before you started actively using resources like MAL? Have you ever had to re-watch a show like this because you either didn't remember it at all or weren't even sure you ever watched it?

Yeah quite a bit. It happens that I'll start watching an anime and only realize part way that I've already seen it. It's the reason I made a MAL, so I keep track of what I've seen and my impression of it though there are still a lot missing.

Not anime specifically, but it has happened for stuff from my childhood. I will forget details of things, sure, but not everything about it.

Aside Naruto and Bleach I usually remember some bits or random scenes, I remember pretty well the openings and I guess that's all. [As an early teen as I kept rewatching Bleach like a maniac till 2012-2013]. In some cases I would even remember more or whole plot depending on the anime title, as for example I remember maybe 2-3 scenes of Guilty Crown while I remember pretty well the whole story of Fate/Zero.

But as much as a little child I remember till today on which episode Jetix has stopped broadcasting Naruto with Polish dub, that was episode 66th [double checked it in case to have a correct number] as it stopped in the middle of Sasuke vs Gaara fight... Not only back than I thought it was a Polish cartoon but also I thought that it is how ithe show ended, due to being canceled or whatever x)

Yes I have struggled to remember a lot of the random ones I watched prior to 2015. I barely remember DimensionW even though I'm pretty sure I saw it, and UzaMaid was mentioned in a thread- I even found it in my list, but if it hadn't been mentioned in the maid thread I would have forgotten about it permanently. There are some I sort of remember scenes from that are within the past 15 years but can't remember titles. If I tried to list everything where I watched at least 1 episode, that would probably double the size of my list but sorry can't remember them...

Don't ask me about childhood though. I do remember the Cold War, but all the crap we watched on TV back then after school, it wa a different world and not really connected to the present day anime fandom.

Anime leaves lasting impressions on me, I remember the contents but the Japanese titles slip out of my mind. But if I describe the plot, characters, or specific scenes I remember, people on the anime community are helpful about identify the anime.
Last month after 6 years of searching I've finally found the name of the title of the anime I just couldn't remember
https://myanimelist.net/anime/1145/Kaze_no_Youjinbou

I don't have any working skills or academic degrees to brag about but I can say I have the ability to retain remarkable amounts of anime contents There are a few reasons why I think I have this talent:
Unemployment and absence of any friendship, romantic relationships and relatives has gotten me more engaged and deeply invested in the stories, characters, and details than most people.
All day long I have only anime and sports to think about to keep me going in life..
I don't have anything else to do or think about.
I always have been highly attentive to the details and intricacies of the anime i watch help cement those memories.

Kinda yeah, mostly titles of anime I watched long ago. But I remember the basic stuff about them, so usually it's relatively easy to find their titles by using the search engine.

I remember bits and pieces of a lot of the stuff I've seen in general. Not just anime. That's basically the bulk of what my brain considers a priority to remember. And even if I can't remember specifics, I can still remember having watched something. There's been a few things that felt like a dream from my childhood but then I looked it up and the show or movie was 100% real.

@NoelleIsSleepy Have you also had the experience when, due to too much deja vu, you realized that you had already watched this before?

@NoelleIsSleepy I often have déjà vu, so I rarely take it seriously. But a couple of times, literally in the middle of the show, I suddenly began to “guess” the development or download from my memory how the scenes would look.

@deg I learned what photographic memory is and how it works and impacts the individuals with photographic memories from anime.

The first time I heard about it was in the anime Detective school q, the first time I came across a character Megumi with photographic memories and learn about photographic memories. Anime taught me a lot of things I remember.

@RainyEvenings Have you ever watched Malcolm in the Middle? The protagonist literally remembered everything he was told if he wanted.

isn't that normal ? A few scenes years down the line may trigger the memories hidden deep within but mostly it is lost to time

I don't remember it. I don't need to if it was good enough it would stick with me and the good ones do

@bakakisima I'm not saying this is abnormal. I'm just interested in the cases when you have to watch an anime again because you don't remember if you watched it. Like my mother, who watches some TV series 2-3 times because of this.

Some I don't actively remember about but if I come across them on MAL profiles for example, I would remember if I've ever watched it. I do forget storyline sometimes.

Recently I randomly stumbled upon an anime I have forgotten: Kaitei Sanman Mile - https://myanimelist.net/anime/9172/Kaitei_Sanman_Mile
If was a trashy kodomo title (as opposed to a great kodomo title like Nagagutsu wo Haita Neko I remember fondly), which explains why.

I will add it to my list now, but not sure is it worth remembering.
The circumstances around me watching it are "more interesting" than the movie itself. Rented it on a VHS in the 90s, turned out to be a pirated anime. Poor visual quality, horrible dub and one could hear the italian dub underneath, since they have pirated it from an italian copy.
At this period I was desperately searching the rental shops for more anime. After Akira, Venus War, Vampire Hunter D, Arslan (only 4 OVA episodes from it), Crying Freeman (only 4 OVA episodes from it), Tank Police (only 2 OVA episodes from it), Galactic Pirates aka Teki wa Kaizoku: Neko-tachi no Kyouen (only 4 OVA episodes from it), RG Veda and the first Gal Force movie, I couldn't find anything interesting. Fist Of The North Star (the movie), the first Tenchi Muyo OVA episode and Techno Police were in the catalogues too, but were stolen everywhere.

If ever available I am not rewatching Kaitei Sanman Mile.

When I started watching anime I kept a list of the show I watched on paper so no - still even without it, I always recognize what I watched and what I didn't, of course after some time I forget details of many shows and If something new comes out I either rewatch it or watch a recap.

Still whenever I see a character/title/cover art I recognize the show as either watched or something on my planned list.
