| I don't think it's bad to help others as long as the help is appreciated and you're not too helpful to the point that it causes you more harm than good. |

| I don't think this particular element is that much common in anime, but yeah, you can hear it from time to time in various contexts, including the one mentioned in the original post. Helping others is good, even if the one who's helping might do it to please themselves by feeling better in any way. After all, egoism and altruism are two sides of the same coin of pleasure. |

It would be interesting to see some specific examples, preferably stories that take this to an extreme. |

| When motivation is only one's self instead of others it means often doing what you want not what they want so it doesn't even effectively help them rather it is imposing one's will onto others which may harm them. Calling it "bad" is overly simplistic, more like infective and potentially harmful but it still can sometimes do good. |

| I mean I'm sure there can be exceptions where this is a bad thing, but otherwise it's completely harmless. I hold doors open for people, help grannies load up their groceries, and give other [signaling] drivers the right of way because I wouldn't like myself so much if I didn't... is that egoism and not compassion? maybe. but who's to judge? |
