Absolutely not.

In fact, years ago I had no interest in anime in part because the anime fans I would encounter only watch battle shounen. If anything, I'm kind of glad I didn't watch any of them or else I probably wouldn't have found other anime that are far more to my liking.

I watched none of them and I don't care because I don't enjoy the genre.

I have actually watched those ones so not really, but even for the ones I haven't watched like Boku no hero academia I would not really say I've ever felt like I was "missing out". Like what am I missing out on exactly? Memes? Fan theories? Idk, there's some value in those things of course but its not worth slogging through a series you don't enjoy.

If anyone tells you "you are missing out for not watching X" and X is a shounen battle anime I think you can safely ignore them. Battle shounens are some of the easiest "gateway drug anime" to get into, if you are not watching them of your own accord you don't need to make an effort to do so (there might be a few exceptions like HxH which I think transcends battle shounen but that's just my opinion). I especially don't think you need to watch shounen as a girl. I am always surprised when I hear girls are going to town watching things like naruto and DBZ. Of course there's nothing wrong with enjoying them but girls are not really the target audience for these shows, there's absolutely no point in forcing it if you are not interested in them naturally. Much the same I don't really expect sailor moon or cardcaptor sakura to appeal to me, I can appreciate them but I don't expect them to hook me in and/or for me to become a fan of them.
@Anjuro damn that's really fucking sexist. No Wonder most anime fans are single forever.

@trinitroglycerin What is sexist about my comment exactly? Saying that the target demographic of shounen (which literally means young boy btw) is young boys? I even said anyone can watch what they want, I'm not trying to tell anyone what to do, I am simply saying that if you are not naturally into shounen, in my humble opinion there is absolutely no reason to force it.

@Anjuro and why wouldn't girls be into battle shounen. My little sisters absolutely love og DB and Naruto while i feel quite lukewarm about them. And no, gender has nothing to do with what you Can enjoy and the so called demographics are in fact sexist and outdated (everyone knows Japan is extremely sexist). This is the same kind of stupid brainwashing as saying pink is girls' color. There: i explained it to you with simple words.

@trinitroglycerin Bro did you read what I wrote? I said, anyone can enjoy anything. My statement is that you shouldn't feel bad for not liking them as a girl, which is what this thread was about, NOT that you should feel bad for liking them as you seem to have twisted it. I know many girls that like Battle shounen, its not exactly news to me that they exist, and I have nothing against it.

I don't understand how demographics are sexist, do you disagree that the sexxes have different preferences then? A demographic is not an exact science, it just means that on average people of a certain persuasion will be more drawn to certain things, which is why its more than possible from people outside the demographic to enjoy a show. And of course, demographic assumptions can even be wrong from time to time, but the fundamental concept of a demographic is neither wrong nor sexist.

@Anjuro and i never said anything about feeling Bad for liking something. The fact you don't understand how thinking someone's gender has an influence on what they will be drawn to is indeed sexist proves that you are sexist. Again, this is no accusation as the majority of the population IS brainwashed from a very young age into conforming to gender stereotypes. Girls are more drawn to certain media because they were TAUGHT to.

@trinitroglycerin Well ok, I guess you subscribe to these modern ideas that the sexxes are completely indistiguishable apart from the social programming we receive from society. All I will say to that is please understand that this is also your opinion, but I disagree and I object to being called a sexist because of it.

You could also look at it like this, what does it matter why the sexxes have different preferences? You're not denying that they exist right? As long as the differences exist that means we can measure them and make decisions accordingly. That's what demographics are.

@Anjuro then we can agree to disagree but just know you are in the minority and anime fans are indeed more sexist than average.

After Bleach & then Fairy Tail I'm in no hurry to jump into a series that is hundreds of episodes long. And no, Shonen doesn't appeal that much to me anyway.

like DBZ, BLEACH, NARUTO, ONE PIECE, etc

I watched all of them up to a certain point of at least around 500 episodes. (Except Bleach, since it doesn't have that many episodes.)
None of them are actually worth putting that much time into, so don't worry, you're not missing out on anything.

If you want to watch these types of battle shounen but without having to put up with infinite episodes, here's a few recommendations:

2006, Busou Renkin
2007, Claymore
2008, Soul Eater
2014, Jojo no Kimyou na Bouken: Stardust Crusaders

I guess so, yeah, that's pretty much on of the reasons I started One Piece, I realized pretty much everyone and their mom were watching that show and decided to start it.
That was a couple of years ago, now I'm starting Wano.

not sure if i am eligible to answer this but as mentioned above, never let fear of missing out force you to watch in order to fit in. peak is different for everyone, and i personally enjoy more if i don't have any expectation for a show. being told to watch greatness is likely a sure way to get disappointed.

I don't really feel left out but I do want to give some of those shows a chance and I'm actually doing that. I tried watching Naruto a couple of years ago but the pacing was horrendous so I stopped in ep 80. I'm almost caught up with One Piece by now and I plan to eventually watch Bleach. Aapart from the Big 3 also watched Hunter x Hunter some time ago and I also want to watch My Hero Academia in the future.

In all fairness, most of those shows aren't particularly well written. The popularity of battle shonens is mostly driven by hype and cool characters with cool powers, but that's all these series tend to do well. You shouldn't feel like you're missing out because these things are absolutely not worth the insane timesink. Except One Piece, that one is pretty good until the timeskip. Also the "peak" stuff is annoying but it's all these fans have to describe the shows they like cause it's not like there are themes or subtext or well-written characters to talk about instead lmao

Kinda? But not really. I'm sure fans of those long running battle shounen are tired of the constant bashing those shows and their fandoms get, and people saying they won't watch it 'cause they're too long. But come on, 700+ episodes is just too much commitment. I would understand their negative responses if I said something like "it's bad 'cause it's too long," but I simply just think it's too long.

DBZ, Naruto and Bleach were my entry into anime, but I hadn't started watching One Piece until 2 years ago. One Piece was never particularly popular with the people around me, so I never thought I was missing out, and Luffy's goofy lookin' ahh just solidified that it's not worth it in my mind bcz 'coolness' was a huge factor in my choice of anime until I was ~14 (still is tbh). Had a change of mind recently, and caught up with it and I can definitely say that I was missing out.

Since I've started reading MAL forums, I have started to feel "left out" with many popular shows on here that I basically never heard of outside of it, many of them being older ones. Especially because they seem to be different "types" of shows. As long as I've seen a couple in each group of anime (genre/sub-genre) tho, then I feel fine if I miss out on others.

Advice to you: do not fall into the manipulation of others that you're missing out on something in life. And about anything in general.
Fomo is a disease. A stupid one at that. Just do/work/watch whatever is to your heart's content.
You're not gonna die if you don't watch any of the big shounens or any kind of show/movie that's out there. It's not a big deal at all.
There people in the world that can't care less about watching TV or celebrities lives in the slightest and they are perfectly fine & content with themselves.

Just do your own business, pal.

maybe at a time I did I remember when I got into anime back in the early 2010s I tried to watch bleach and naruto since every anime fan was constantly talking about those shows but both were just too long for me to finish them so dropped them both bleach i actually did like what i saw of it but with naruto it was more "ehh" lol, 100 something episodes is the most im willing to do normally so battle shounens like saint seiya, yu yu hakusho, inuyasha and fist of the north star are the longest ones im able to complete and sadly none of those are really watched much by people of my generation or language lol well inuyasha kinda is, even though its still not as big as naruto, bleach and one piece, but the other three are seen as too "old" and saint seiya is barely heard of from english speakers. now though I don't care anymore about trying to watch whatever is trending in the current anime community, I never bothered watching jujutsu kaisen, demon slayer, my hero academia ect. because none of them appeal to me really.
