Man, I have no words, everything before minute 18 was perfect: art, animation, direction, choreography, and then the turning point effect kicks in and hitted like the novel did... Kudos to the staff and everyone involved in the production. Oh, and happy father's day.

P.S.: People who voted 1 star (directly or with bots): Go fuck yourselves.

Even as a ln reader. This hits so hard. Emotionally charged with both Paul and Zenith's fates. One of the best episodes of the series in both action and story.

They made up for the shit season with this episode!! But I really wanted a first person perspective when Rudeus turned to look at them 😔, cant have everything i guess.

About Paul saving Rudeus, I am pretty sure that was because of Rudeus not being able to read the hydra's final stuggle instead of standing and staring at others for anyone wondering.

I am not daijobu...

I had a feeling that they were preparing us for this but I didn't expect it to be that brutal. His father dies, he gets the Luke Skywalker treatment, and to put salt on the wounds, he has no emotional payback due to Zenith's condition.
Studio Bind is cruel AF. Happy Father's day I guess....

The OST and animation were all good but I cant think about that rn.
Even with all this, this is why Mushoku Tensei is PEAK FICTION.

I think I'm going to stop watching anime for today and spend the rest of the day with my family especially my dad.
RIP Paul. You were not the perfect father but you tried to be.

This too on fathers day
they managed to save zenith but at what cost
looks like she isn't herself anymore
feel so bad for Rudy

Some LN Extra Details (Volume 12 Chapter 8-10 (partial))

- Elinalise lends mana imbued crystals to Roxy and Rudy incase they needed to recover their mana.
- Hydra is a type of dragon. It was varied by colors of white, gray and gold in Demon Continent, but they never saw a green type before.
- Roxy said it is a Manatite Hydra that absorbs mana. It was spotted during the second Great Human-Demon War. It was last heard to be slain before the continent split apart.
- They cremated Paul's body there to prevent it from being zombified even though Rudy was conflicted by it. He had hoped to bring some part of him back as a proof to his family, but none is left
- Paul only left 3 things, the metal breastplate that protected his torso, the magic sword and his favourite sword.
- A lot of thinking and reminiscing when Rudy was at the inn. He wonders what Paul is actually thinking seeing his final face in his death, and what is he actually trying to say beforehand (Maybe we will see that more in next episode)
- Rudy had hoped that he could celebrate and then grief together with Zenith once she woke up, but he was truly depressed to see her condition and knowing that he had lost both of them.

Differences from LN
- Part of chapter 10 is shortened after they saved Zenith
@Homura24 are you the guy from youtube comment? beacuse you two have the exact same LN extra details comment

Happy Father's Day everyone.

The choice to have this episode airing on Father's Day was such a twisted decision, but a great decision. I think many of us, even people who weren't spoiled or haven't read the Light Novel, would have saw this coming, but it doesn't make it hurt any less. Clearly, most of the resources went to this episode right here. The most bone-chilling episode since Turning Point 2 in my opinion. The way the music was done to make things hype in the big moments, while staying as eerie and quiet as possible in the sad moments, props to the staff for directing this as well as they did. To make things worse, even though Zenith was saved, she wasn't herself anymore, and that was truly the twist of the knife. Unforgiving, brutal, but excellent episode. Where will we go from here after this tragedy? Paul, you were a flawed person, but in the end a good father.

That has to be one of the most emotionally devastating episodes of any anime I've ever watched. ON FATHER'S DAY!!!!!????? THEY DO THIS TO PAUL ON FATHER'S DAY???!!!!!! I knew it was coming from reading the novels but nothing can prepare anyone for something like this. A personal anecdote but I spent most of yesterday with my own father so this hit even harder than it normally would. Paul sacrificing himself to save Rudy from the hydra, that's something I'll never forget. I'm still ugly crying typing this out. Its too much. The entire battle against the hydra was incredible to see all the teamwork, they've built up a squad in this labyrinth. Paul rushing straight in headfirst I wholeheartedly agree with. If I say my wife trapped in crystal behind some giant hydra I wouldn't care either. I'm going right at this monster, slicing heads off, ripping its guts out. I'd put it all on the line once in saw her right in front of me. Luckily there's cooler heads in the party who could get Paul to fall back after the first encounter. Seeing that magic doesn't work on it requires a massive strategy pivot. Rudy having information from his previous life once again meant the difference, burning the hydra heads immediately after they're cut will stop the regeneration. Hercules and his labors have a lot more insight than people expect. The second encounter proved to be much more dangerous, the hydra quickly tried to rip its own neck off to start the regeneration beyond the burns. Rudy, Roxy, Talhand, Elinalise, Geese, and Paul. They all fought their hardest to save Zenith. The animation looked so good, they did a great job conveying the emotion and dire straights of the situation. Paul diving in to save Rudy, Rudy sacrificing his left arm to grab at the last hydra head's eye!!!! Both making sacrifice plays when its all on the line. A noble effort by them all, they saved Zenith from the labyrinth. But at what cost, Paul is dead, and Zenith doesn't have all her facilities anymore. Rudy has already lost so much, I don't know if he can handle losing both parents at the same time.

It wasn’t spoiled outright for me, but I had a feeling it was coming with some of the imagery in the OP. Still absolutely gut wrenching to watch, especially with them just showing you Paul’s Torso splat on the rock dying. And then Zenith too omg

Here we go... the final battle.

Had high expectations going into this episode, especially because Bind brought their Avengers team for this one, so I knew the animation was going to be amazing, and it was. Anyway, I really don't blame them for retreating—they're obviously not ready. Paul was pretty much just blinded by the fact that Zenith was there. But at the same time, it's that same determination that Paul needed to inspire the others.

Hydra is CGI, as everyone expected. I mean, it's a nine-headed dragon where all the heads move at the same time. I doubt even Kaiju No.8 from this season could keep up a 2D form for that. But even so, the main action scenes were still incredible. And that scene where Rudy just said fuck it, went no magic, just fingers, and gouged out the dragon's eye—so tough man. Unfortunately, he did lose a hand. But the biggest loss of all... damn. I was spoiled, but even still, this hurts.

The thing about this is that at first, we were made to hate Paul, but as we kept going, the show made us empathize with and feel for him. And just like that, he's gone. The pain for Rudeus doesn't even stop there; granted, this was expected, but his own mom forgot how to speak... and if she can't speak, I'd bet that she doesn't even know who he is... Saved her, but at what cost.

To delay this episode by a week just so it could air on Father's Day... you're truly sick in the head Bind.

Yeah man they saved her but at what cost. No offence but she’s a vegetable now. Might take months or even years for her to start speaking again

And in fitting fashion, bots are back to ruin the score of the most important ep of this season. Wonderful... what a shame that this happens constantly.

@MangagnaM No, I think this is the one time where I can agree with the "Hated it". I begrudgingly picked "Loved it" almost after picking "Hated it"

@LordDurzo It's by like a second, the ability helps in some circumstances but it isnt a cheat code to defeat opposition like the hydra or elite fighters. He lost focus too, which happens after Paul shoved him. He's been vulnerable in fights like these in the past emotionally like in s1 with the Cobra, just that split second made the difference here.

I think my main problem is; Rudy stands there for two attacks and does nothing, because "oh this is easy we can win". It's pretty dumb considering he can see into the future, and I think they could have written Pauls death better. Dunno if it's like that in source material or not but that's the only reason I could think of why people don't like this episode.

It was by far the best episode this season complaints aside.

@LordDurzo They definitely made it tough, limbs were flying off, Elinalise was burned by light contact a couple times, regeneration, etc. Keep in mind, the people that faced off against the hydra comprise of S-rank adventurers in Paul, Elinalise, Talhand and Geese, Roxy a Water King and one of the strongest water mages in the world and Rudeus, a guy who is good at voiceless incantation and is very versatile and trained heavily with even stronger people like Ruijerd while adventuring together in the Demon continent of all places with monsters. The people who fought the hydra are not too far from the best that can fight in this dungeon, and they still struggled a lot and lost Paul + Rudeus' hand.

I think I was spoiled on Paul's death a while back but never knew specifically when it would happen. With all the flags leading up to this episode though, I figured this was it.

What an episode. The tension, the stakes, obviously the animation, and the sacrifice. RIP Paul. That one week break so that this episode could land on Father's Day, whether intentional or purely coincidental, is devious work. And to add insult to injury Zenith can't even speak properly. Rudy is going through it for sure.

Remember a few episodes ago, the Turning Point episode when Rudy made the conscious decision to rescue Zenith despite Man-God's warnings, and people came in here complaining "hOw iS tHiS a TuRniNg pOiNt?" Yea, hopefully they understand now.

Happy Father’s Day…Been sat here for like 20 minutes just trying to conceptualise what we just witnessed. On the surface, animation, action all at the best they’ve ever been in Mushoku, but narratively a devastating episode.

In time I’ll probably be able to look back and appreciate the greatness of the writing here, but for now it just hurts. Tuff to put the blame on one person, but Rudeus freezing up mid fight really did get Paul killed. Man God told him he’d regret it and he will for the rest of his life. On the other hand(pun intended) if he doesn’t go to the labyrinth, Zenith probably dies and he doesn’t get back in contact with Roxy, so it’s basically a soul for a soul situation.

What really hurts and credit to the author and animation staff for not shying away from it is how brutal and quick Paul’s death was. Straight up cut in half in an instant.. Rudeus didn’t even get to say goodbye or to have a proper last conversation with him, he won’t see Rudeus’ kids, Rudeus will never know what he wanted to tell him last episode.. Norn.. oh God Norn is gonna be broken. This just sucks, fuck.

And then to top it off Zenith’s brain has been turned to mush. So you save her and what did it cost? Everything.

If I talk about the episode, this episode I gues is peak of Mushoku tensei, only that orested ep would come higher than this and I can say that the world of mushou has changed now, Rudy and Lilya are the only left to run whole family and what to say about Zenith, I first time felt angry on her.

Man, I hate sad episodes. I mean, I get it, it can't all be sunshine but damn do I hate them.
RIP Paul

I wish Rudy had been a little more on the ball since it seems like he should've been able to do more with what we've seen but then again it was a crazy fight and since he got knocked off balance a few shots in there it's probably not his fault that he could quite keep up (I mean these guys have years more experience fighting than him and even they were struggling).

I guess we see why the Man-God said he'd regret it if he came. He lost Paul, and ostensibly Zenith, plus his arm. Though if he hadn't come he likely would've lost Roxy and still ostensibly lost Zenith but in an even more abstract way. He might've even still lost Paul since it didn't seem like he'd have given up any time soon.

As painful as it is, it's probably better he came since it saved Roxy, solidified Zenith's state, and allowed Paul some peace. Though I am wondering about his arm. He said that spell wasn't powerful enough to regrow limbs which kinda implies there are healing spells powerful enough to do so. That plus the magic doll he found means that I think he has a good chance of either getting a better healing spell and regrowing his arm or getting some magic artificial hand that is practically as good as it.
