i feel whats been going on in the recent chapters have been totally unnecessary and a wholly gross disfiguration of the characters fujimoto has built up as of recent, sure yoru is a devil and doesn't fully understand humans but her unwavering goal of cutting denji's dick off just to fight him makes no sense if she even thought about it for a second, as well as this ruining denji and asa's relationship together, this whole chapter was just gross and for one i didn't want to live through another evanglion moment and see a teenager cum while having a mental breakdown. i like chainsaw man and i think fujimoto has written some incredible things, this is just not it, he needs to really take a look back (lol) at this whole thing and figure out where to go because i really don't see where it is supposed to go at this moment.

He just went full Eof E here. I did not see that coming but after that stupid‘I’ll cut your d*ck off” from last chapter maybe it was to be expected he’d go a random route like this.

And lol, people acting as if this entire second’cour’ hasn’t been a trainwreck since long ago. Fujimoto has run out ideas and is just running on fumes. I’m glad I stopped buying the physical copies at volume 11 where this should have ended.

Honestly, this is a peak chapter. The character writing on display here puts most modern day shounen (and manga in general) to shame.

Denji and Asa are both traumatised teenagers who have a ton of trauma. Denji's trauma is so abnormally dense and encompasses literally everything, but it's mostly the fault of women who've sexually manipulated him. As a result he believes his suffering must lead to a concrete wonderful ending (i.e. mindblowing sex and a dozen girlfriends) otherwise what was the point of the suffering.

On the other hand, Asa's trauma is about her thinking she ruins everyone's life who she gets close to (Her mother, her classmates, her friends, Bucky, etc) and that she always fails at the most inoppurtune of times. It has given her a savior complex where she needs to repent for those supposed mistakes. Not to mention she's possessed by a devil who continously ruins her life (and wants to kill Denji).

Their romance was never going to be wonderful and fluffy with all that trauma hanging in the air, especially in the midst of the end of the world. If Denji and Asa just so happened to have a fairy tale and picturesque sex scene at this point in the story, it would betray a majority of the wonderful character work Fujimoto has been doing over the years.

This singular chapter prooved to me, that Fujimoto knew what he was doing this whole time. A lot of previous chapters felt almost like filler, jumping from one side adventure to the other with no real consequences. Some things still feel out of place, but this chapter really makes me believe, that what happened was planned from the start of part 2. It's genuinely heartbreaking seeing how Denji is being treated. I'm really hyped to see what happens next.

@RandomPerson9348 @wrestling70 I can't say about others but I'm pretty sure, like me, many other people are actually frustrated because of lack of actual progression for past few chapters. We have problem not because we think it's weird or disgusting, Heck give us Denji's actual sex scene, I wouldn't mind but the thing is we are waiting for so long for actual progression, we are waiting for new chapter for weeks and months, then we suddenly get the whole chapter dedicated to this. Of course our reaction are not normal.

Because everyone is not same as
the mindless fanboy's of the series who will accept anything thrown them and consider it deep writing. It's also pretty obvious Fujimoto wanted to make the Evangelion references because he is definitely that type of person

It isn't deep writing. And nobody's denying that he was making an Evangelion reference. It's just that this is the 167th chapter of the manga, and it's about time people realize that this is just how Fujimoto does things. It's his style of writing/panelling.

As for the progress part, I highly disagree. The story of the devils is nothing but a setting. Chainsaw Man is Denji's story. We are making a lot of progress in each chapter. We made a lot of progress in 167. Try reading something like The Climber and you'll realize how these styles of manga work. CSM is a character-driven work. THIS IS THE PROGRESS.

Three chapters ago, Denji found out Nayuta died. Two chapters ago, he was confronted with the choice of, once again, using his sexual drive as an out from his suffering. Last chapter, he decided not to fall for it and tried to fight against his desires. In 167, the probable death of Nayuta caused Yoru to restart that cycle for Denji.

He killed his father. He led to Power and Aki's deaths. He killed Makima. Now he has indirectly killed Nayuta. He kills every person he gets close to. But his choices, his circumstances, and the person he decided to become don't let him mourn them. Cause he keeps running away. He has put himself in a loop where even if he tries to not to run, he can't.

With 167, he is not only being given another chance to run away from the pain of Nayuta's death, but also another person who can act as support for him in the form of Yoru/Asa. The question is whether he realises this next chapter and develops, or regresses further into who he is.

And that is not even starting to connect it to the humanization of Yoru, the increase in her desires and her relationship with Asa; who is a whole other piece of the puzzle that I didn't bring up.

The problem isn't with Fujimoto. He's doing his job phenomenally. But if you judge a cake based on the amount of salt it has, you'll always be disappointed by it.
@RandomPerson9348
Whilst the events of Chapter 167 can be garish, I believe the development of both characters in the strange erotic play depicted can be forgiven if I think it's going where I think it's going. I sympathise with Denji's motivation as he's struggling at this confusing point in life where nothing feels within his control. When you feel like you can't do anything you go limp, figuratively. He goes limp allowing whatever happens to him to occur which can feel quite peaceful but also frustrating because he still wants to regain control of his life. Speaking from experience my life has always been confusing growing up in a less-than-normal household and even now I'm just more confused as an "adult" after graduating high school. However, the situation isn't helpless for Denji. He could bear witness or partake in an event that brings a deep connection to his ethos. A revelation if you will. It doesn't have to be extra ordinary, it could be another character giving him a lesson as a pseudo-parental figure or Nayuta somehow reuniting with him. The pacing is standard Chainsaw Man, this manga is known for its insane pacing so fans should be used to this level of rapid escalation.
Asa releases many feelings she has for Denji through her nearly uncharacteristic action which can stem from her need for connection. She like Denji is also traumatised and lonely which creates an unhealthy trauma bonding type relationship between them. The whole scene is like a fucked up climax of two characters learning to adapt to and accept their cruel circumstances. While not healthy I find it somewhat realistic that they struggle with the side that wants change and side that embraces fatalism.

I'm not saying this scene can't be improved it most certainly can. Fujimoto didn't have to go so hard on the progression of this scene he could've added more struggle before they reach the breaking point. At the same time I kind of get why he made it end on this chapter. Just my thoughts on this chapter.

Exactly. And yes, it's not like this was the only way to lead to a conclusion like this for Asa and Denji. Fujimoto had full freedom to write a different path to lead to the same development.

But I'd say this was one of the best. Denji's character is heavily based around sex because of his age and living conditions. Asa is heavily based on her shyness and inferiority complex. Both of them collide quite well in this chapter, as you pointed out.

And as you said, this is definitely going to lead to some really big character development on Denji's part primarily. Here's to hoping that it is positive and not a continuation of the destructive spiral he is currently in.

less then a week ago i made a thread on the double standards in the anime community, one of those was how people react diffrently to sexual themes. and the reaction to this chapter once again prove me right, prove that those double standard exist. people will ignore great writing, will ignore how this scene completely fit chainsaw man and fujimoto writing, ignore how chainsaw man had far more immoral themes before, and just for what excatly? not for any reasonable reason at least. the positive side that it will filter out the retards who infest the chainsaw man fandom.

P.S. hope yoru/asa lick his cum next chapter.

It's honestly hilarious to see people freaking out so much about sexual content. CSM has always dealt with these topics, and now it's just at the forefront, because at some point it needed to get here.

This would've been a very small thing if it were a live-action show or film, which is kind of baffling, but the fact that there are elitists on here who talk about how anime isn't cartoon and for kids are still horrified when it has any adult stuff.

Sex is a normal part of life. It is a normal part of storytelling. Has been for time immemorial. Focusing plainly on the sex and sexual themes rather than trying to understand them in the context of the story says more about your immaturity than it says about the story.

The people on here, following their logic, wouldn't last fifteen minutes of a GoT or Boys episode without losing their minds.

Exactly!! I’m actually super shocked by most of the reactions on this thread, but I guess everyone is entitled to their own opinion. I felt like this type of thing was bound to happen sooner or later based on what has happened so far in the manga (and also his other mangas).

And yes, CSM was bound to end up here someday. No point in introducing such a big theme and then never moving forward with it. It's a huge part of Denji's character.
