Stopped at episode 16, decided I wanted to wait for it to finish airing to binge watch it all at once; so yes let's start at the beginning again and finally finish Freiren.

So here we go, finally I'll start Frieren. And it was a really great first episode, the visuals and music are beautiful. Very calm atmosphere, but still interesting, especially how the characters are interacting with each other. Guess we'll have a lot of timeskips, so far I'm impressed.

This was nice. Not all anime needs to have sassy lewd anime girls and edginess, that stuff is nice too, but it's nice to have variety.

Damn, what a unique anime. This show just made me feel like I experienced 50 years of an elf's life and it went by in just a flash.

What's wrong with you people ? The opening is awesome and the ending sucks. Not the other way around.

Also, some praise here is way over the top. Get real !

And to keep the status quo, mid mid, peak peak, rizz rizz, cooking cooking.

After learning about Frieren, I decided to avoid reading the source material until I finish watching the anime. What are my thoughts about the episode? Episode 1 exuded a constant feeling of mundaneness, which in this case is not a critique, rather a compliment; I appreciate the lighthearted mirthfulness and nonchalant manner in which this show has thus far handled what some may consider sensitive, melancholic topics, because anime as a medium, as I have observed personally, expresses intense emotional feelings in an equivalent manner: very intensely, so the lack thereof in the first episode was cathartic, as it demonstrated an approach to grimness that is more in line with my own reactions in real life.

surprising amount of world building and development for just under 30 minutes. great start, but I do not know how you can get 28 episodes out of this. I will just have to see.

What elves must go through, as we have been shown in movies, comics, stories, games etc...To live so needlessly long, and see all those around them die of old age...even the great dwarves. But its so pointless! This elf is A BAKA! lol And long after the shows over, the elf will probably go on in their own world as we humans age more and more. :P Heh

It remembers me a little of the Studio Ghibli trace. The history and the time and age philosophy of the human race is much well written and i liked it.

No way I cried like baby in the first episode, last time a show got me this emotional in the first episode was when I watched To Your Eternity

Fantastic direction, animation and sound. Easy 10/10 if it keeps this quality.

I really like Frieren's appearance, she looks cute.

First episode and I've already known this is going to be slow and depressing. Time just flows differently for long life span and immortal beings.
Anime is fun.

Wow, what a way to start the anime, right at the end of an epic journey.
This anime has a really interesting setting, and it did a great job at showcasing the characters, because at the time that Himmel died, and Frieren started to cry, I actually cried a bit too, the scene before with the meteors was just beautiful and the whole premise was just emotional honestly. And this part was also the 1st part where Frieren shows some emotion in the episode, so I think it adds to the emotion of the scene.
I'm still surprised that after 70 years in total, that the corrupted priest is still alive, and is actually looking for a way to be imortal it seems, since he's actually afraid of death. I don't know, I feel like God wouldn't like that idea, but who knows.
We also got to know the little girl Fern, that is actually a really powerful mage, and I don't know if Frieren didn't take interest in her, because they do seem to be alike. I suppose Fern will end up in her party. Also, their names are really similarly, so that must be a sign of how similar they are.
Overall, I think the premise of the anime is really interesting, but if the whole premise is going to be the concept of imortality, this anime will have a hard work topping off another anime I watched, Maquia, that has that concept too, and that it showcased perfectly (it's actually my 3rd favorite anime of all time). I wonder how the anime is going to be from now on, and my expectations are really high, because everyone has been talking about this anime ever since it came out, and it has the highest score ever in MAL, and that's a feat no anime has done for years now.
Final notes are that the opening and ending are good, but didn't win my heart over, maybe they'll grown on me. And the opening was giving me Yoasobi vibes, and then the name appeared and everything was explained.
Also, the scenes with Frieren and her suitcase remembered me a lot of Violet Evergarden, that is also about a journey of understanding the human being, just like Frieren is doing.
I have really high expectations for this anime.

Rewatching this on the dub, it took a bit but I love the VA who did Frieren, Rewatching on dub felt like a new experience, 100% suggested to those who finished the series subbed and want just a lil more of this anime.

Man, I did not expect to get THIS absorbed in the series right away, even after all the high praise it gets. Or maybe because of all the high praise, I was a bit skeptical. But yeah, didn't take much time to convert me into the Frieren cult!

A journey might have ended, but a new journey is now about to begin. And I'm so excited to be a part of it.

And HIMmel is indeed handsome, even as an old baldie.

I would like to pose a question: Are the words that Frieren says at the funeral (which are muted together with the ringing bells) revealed in a later episode?
Will we ever get to know them? I have a feeling these words might be meaningful during her journey.

As a side note, I loved this episode (so emotional!).
I wish the whole series would have followed the same time-passing-by-quickly pattern.

I have finally started my journey to watch Frieren. I was putting it off because of an equal belief that it would either blow me away or let me down, and wanted to be emotionally in the mood.
Being a pessimist I prefer being proven wrong much more than being right, it's much nicer to be elevated by a pleasant surprise, than to have one's doubts confirmed....

What I'll say, is that it has not uplifted me the way I was hoping. I could rip this apart, but since it's just the first episode- I'll try to just stick with what I saw as major flaws in storytelling- and you can ignore everything I write and troll me later:

So this opens with the typical laundry list of cliches that current fantasy anime insist upon: STOP ME IF YOU'VE HEARD THIS ONE BEFORE: The "Protagonists" are "Adventurers", there's a Priest, a Mage, a Dwarf Warrior, a Healer. Two humans, a Tolkien-ien Elf, and a Tolkinien Dwarf. They look exactly like the stereotypes say they should. They killed the Demon King off screen, and are heading to the Kingdom with its typical Tolkienien walled castle to be rewarded for saving Middle Earth-I-mean-The-World.... we don't even see the King nor hear much dialogue. Just shown a few quick scenes and then they're watching a Meteor Shower- because the medievalists knew exactly what meteor showers were and were not at all superstitious nor ignorant about such things....
Absolutely none of that was surprising, interesting, nor engaging. The BIGGEST PROBLEM I had the whole time was that I didn't know these characters at all, didn't get to experience their adventure nor why this Demon King was so important nor see the struggle of them taking him down- didn't really experience any part of their journey nor their hardship, didn't get to see the ceremony of them being knighted, because the plot was in such a hurry to just set up this most basic FRAMEWORK, and then to show Frieren returning looking exactly the same (Because Tolkien-ien Elves are immortal as everyone knows) to meet Himmel the Healer when he's an old man.

Listen, Gen Z: You can't claim it's emotional to see an old friend age and die WHEN HE ISN'T IMPORTANT TO US YET. This is literally 10 minutes into a show that has literally just introduced its perfectly formulaic cast. I see the guy- and sort of chuckled at how cartoonishly silly he looked. Apparently she hasn't visited him in fifty years. FIFTY? The best friend of your life you just abandoned for 50 years, and when you see each other again it's like you saw him 5 minutes ago.... Well, it's because WE DID see them 5 minutes ago, in this show. It has failed to relate the passage of time- and feels like no time has passed at all. Seeing a character I've not really gotten to know for a handful of minutes suddenly being old IS NOT CAPTIVATING. If this had been shown in the 12th episode of an entire season of this group's journey- then I can imagine for sure I'd cry my eyes out. But here, I feel nothing because it's not been any time at all!

Then the meeting with the other character- Heiter- is the same way. Except she returns to see him again another 20 years later. Again, it's like no more than 5 minutes had passed. To make this more convincing- he shouldn't act like it's just business as usual, as he does- he should be in TEARS- asking why she's been gone so long!! And of course- only just now he's conveniently taken in an adorable child mage who is of course uniquely talented.

I'm sorry, but the list of fiction-writing sins in this is so long, I could barely enjoy it- as I was yelling at the screen so many times- "THat's not how it works!" in frustration.

I'm SORRY I have had to lambast this so badly- because it definitely does a lot of things well. The frame-rate and appearance is stellar. It looks superb, the animation is very good, including crowds and side-characters. The background soundtrack is great. The only moving thing truly emotionally moving about it was Evan Call's strings, but the violins are being played too early, too prematurely, and with too much emotion over a story that has so far been only an inch deep. And apparently I have 27 more episodes of this to go. UGH! It better improve!
