I hate it from watching the trailer but now watching episode 1 it doesn't really bothering me anymore.
Maybe a little bit for the background.

There's really no reason to change what's good. It's not bad, but it was better before.

I like both the old and the new designs. There's something about the eyes in the new design (especially Rin's), I'm not sure about the right choice of word to define them... maybe droopy?

After binge watching the previous seasons all I can say is that looks like animation budget was massively cut.
At least there aren't any baffling changes like Rin having short hair... Or driving a three-wheeler...

So I just finished binge watching season 1 and 2, and then jumped right into 3, and yeah, after a binge watch of the first 2 seasons, the change is quite jarring in the 3rd. It's not bad, it's just different. It's a little disappointing, mostly because I like consistency, so even if the studios had been reversed, I would still be a little disappointed in the change. But, I'll get used to it after a couple episodes, so as long as the feel this season is the same, I'm not too worried.

Honestly the thing that stood out even more to me, was the environment design, everything has a much more photorealistic look too it then the previous two seasons.

I could've accepted a change in art style, but the characters look straight-up completely different, they're more childish and Shimarin's hair is completely different. People say it looks closer to the manga, I still have to read it (and now I have one more reason to do it), but I can't see the resemblance.
They also got rid of Asaka, apparently. It's almost like the studio purposely tried to disappoint as many fans as possible.

Shimarinbros, I don't think I'm gonna recover from this.

Does anyone know why they had to change Studio in the first place? C - Staition work on Yuru Camp was incredible and looking the new characters designs is a huge disappointment for me personally.. :(

Kinda surprised. It definitely got a different feel to the first 2 season. Cannot say I disliked it, but felt different. But, the animation flow is a bit better tho. As long they kept the mini mochi faces and the puff cheeks, I'm not complaining yet lol

I'm not a huge fan of how Rin changed from stoic and almost emotionless to expressive-but-sleepy-eyed. I would have preferred the old design, but more Yuru Camp is better than no Yuru Camp. The other characters look mostly consistent.

Why would you bump a 6 months old post? That's like basic forum etiquette.
Anyway, Asaka is the singer of the first two seasons' opening, I'm glad she at least got the ending.

Since I'm back to this thread, I'm mostly happy with the new anime, the backgrounds are still great if not even better than before, honestly the character designs are the only downgrade, with Shimarin being the one who got the shortest end of the stick, the other girls' designs are more tolerable. Maybe I'll get used to it, but overall yeah it's not as bad as I feared it would be, peak is back. Asaka deserved the opening, tho, even if the new one isn't bad at all
I believe in Shimarin supremacy

@Exentio ain't even look at the date, only hopped in because of s3 release, so assumed it was new.
anyway, the big change for me, like a few ppl have said, is more Rin's personality. It's definitely different compared to S1/2 but idk if its closer to her manga version or not (again, personality, not design).

I barely see differences in art, but I don't like that so much scenes (minor action) differs from manga.

That being said, as long as they don't play up the CGDCT angle too much (insomuch as not falling back on tired tropes of that genre which the original seasons didn't really do that much, e.g. nobody is actively jealous of Aoi's breast size or gropes her from behind asking how her they got so big, etc.), don't try to amp up action or stakes (S2 came kinda close to doing that a few times, especially with music design), don't COMPLETELY change the atmosphere of the music, don't turn it into a blatant vehicle for tourism advertisement (the original series of course did this to an extent but it felt like more of a natural consequence of the girls researching where they were going so it fit and wasn't distracting), and don't shift the focus too far away from the girls and their journeys/interactions to becoming more focused on being a camping education show (like how Dagashi Kashi is just a thin narrative designed mostly as a vehicle to deliver history and fun/interesting facts about candy and snacks), then I think there's every chance that this next season will be just fine.

That is a lot of "don't"s, though...

I mean, but none of that will happen. It's not like the third season is changing the source material and the anime original content has been so far in tone with the rest of the series. The show is trying to be quiet all the time so it's not going to amp up stakes in a very significant way, it won't really be much more of a vehicle for tourism advertisement than it already is, and it would actually be very absurd if the girls suddenly obsess about Aoi's breast size after having it shoved in their faces for two seasons without any big reaction (the only time it's even mentioned in the show is when Nadeshiko finds out that Akari is impersonating her sister).

After watching the first episode though, I do like the new character designs and how they look in motion. With Rin and Chiaki I'm a bit torn, they don't fully work for me compared to their previous designs, but it's not like they look any bad, the characters are still fully recognizable and they seem to allow for more fluid character animation (which is one of 8-Bit's strengths). The thing I'm missing a little from C-Station so far is the set design, which was detailed but not plain photorealistic and added a bit of filtering and lighting that generated a recognizable atmosphere to the whole show, one that I sadly found a bit irregular in this first episode.
@jal90 I don't know that it's necessarily a given that none of those things will happen, but I do agree with the implied notion that there wouldn't be any real reason for 8-Bit to do so so long as the source material didn't make those directional changes itself, since the general vibe and formula worked so well for all the preceding seasons/movie.

Maybe the visual atmospheric changes you noted will level out, anime is so often still being worked on while airing and while I haven't yet I do intend to at least check out a few episodes from this season before waiting for the whole season to come out so I can watch the whole thing at my own pace (may use it as an "excuse" to just re-watch the whole series from the beginning yet another time). But interesting takes on the function of the new character designs, I'll keep an eye out for the effects on animation when I get around to a preview in a few weeks.

if the situation were reversed and the first two seasons had been done by 8bit in this art style (assuming all other things remained equal) and then C-Station had taken over the 3rd and done it in their style, then people likely wouldn't like the C-Station style. People just generally don't like changes to things they like.

You closed the topic.

The new design isn't bad, it's just different, and people are mad at it because it looks different.

I don't really have an issue with the change of the artstyle, other than the fact that I have to get used to the changes, but that will come along if we give it some time. I do however have some issues with the animation though.

At the beginning of the second episode, when Ayano drives down a road and parks her bike, the 3D animation just looks so stiff and unnatural imo. I'm aware that the shots of the characters on mopeds are almost always 3D animated, but even so it didn't use to bother me like it does now. That scene really broke the immersion for me.

Other than that, there was another scene in ep2 where the girls assaulted Chiaki pretending to be zombies, and I ended up rewinding that scene over and over again because the animation quality was so poor. Chiaki's arm just passes straight through Ena's head, and it was jarring to the point where it almost looked AI generated.

Like a lot of people have already said, what's important about this change of studio is that they nail the same vibe, not necessarily the artstyle and character design. And I agree with that. I don't feel like I have extremely high standards for how similar this season has to look, or how good the animation has to be. That has never been what Yuru Camp has been for me, but even so I feel like the quality of the animation dips so much in some scenes that I wonder why the studio even decided to take over this show in the first place. Setting Yuru Camp standards aside, I think the animation from time to time looks generally bad for anime standards in 2024, and I don't really know why this is the case. I can't really imagine that the animators haven't been given enough time, yet apart from just plain negligence I don't see any other reason why it would look like it does.

8-bit is making two other shows this season on top of the Blue Lock coming that is also coming out this month. I haven't checked anything about Yuru Camp's conditions in particular, but time crunch is not a stretch.

@SixofQueens Well, after the second episode I'm definitely more sold on the character designs not being exactly a change for the better, but neither for the worse. They are different, they still work and they have other strong points compared to the older ones. On the background design, it still bugs me, specially on nature shots; the landscapes look too photorealistic and the lighting also factors in to me. These are my thoughts on the aesthetics so far, because writing wise I'm very glad to tell that it's like Yuru Camp never left, same dynamics, same type of comedy and same quiet and easygoing mood as usual. You are definitely going to enjoy this when you get to watch it, if you liked the previous seasons.

I think that the series keeps playing to its strengths very straightforwardly. In that sense it doesn't look like the change of studio is affecting the content or the ideas behind the show. It is soon to determine if it will be the case for the whole season but I would expect that, it is the formula that has been working so far.

There is a noticeable decrease in quality overall with the art. Still enjoyable, but I do notice it while watching even though I wasn't specially looking for it. I didn't even think about it outside of people mentioning it last year.

I wasn't going to comment on it at first since the first episode still landed OK for me, but I wasn't a big fan of the change in design they did for Ayano in episode 2, also just feels generally more blobby then C-Station's sharper designs which I enjoyed more. It's not outright bad in most scenes but it does feel jarring at times..:/

Don't like it, it feels cheaply made and overall a big dip in quality compared to season 1 and 2.

Dropped on episode 7, which ironically I think was the best episode with all the 4th wall breaking.

Awful, just plain awful. Not just the art, but the sound too, is not handled as well as the previous seasons. I couldn't even watch it for a few minutes without getting bored. I hope they'll go back with C-station if they ever make the fourth season, or else I doubt I'll watch it again.

Unfortunately, they couldn’t match the C-station’s perfection with doing chibi and deformed facial animation. The biggest disappointment is the look of Nadeshiko.
Also, the amount of 3DCG is just painful.

Similar thin happened to Dagashi Kashi. First season done by studio feel was perfect. Second season no so much (I don’t remember who did the 2nd season).
Dub = fake crap. Always.

Like most people, I was apprehensive about another studio taking over Secret Society BLANKET. I tried to keep an open mind through 9 episodes, but the shortcomings kept piling up week after week, and at this point there's no denying that I'm enjoying the 3rd season far less than its predecessors.

I'm biased with my love of the C-Station character designs, but aside from just a subjective preference for appearance, I find the new designs flatter, less expressive, and the character animation more susceptible to going off model. The chibi designs also aren't as varied and have lost some of their charm. The new character designs use thinner outlines and are drawn with more highlights in their hair/face to give them that "shiny" look. These two choices make the characters look out of place on top of the backgrounds. The show now frequently looks like it was shot using substandard green screen technique, something that shouldn't be an issue for a cartoon.

Speaking of the backgrounds, they're totally inconsistent under 8bit. They rely heavily on CG for things like vehicle interiors, stationary vehicles, environment details like fences, stairs, etc. I wouldn't complain about that choice if the compositing didn't also fluctuate from occasionally good to outright awful. Aside from the CGI and compositing, the background drawings themselves vary frequently, as if they were done by many teams, each under different art direction. The lack of cohesion prevents me from feeling immersed in the world of the show. To make things even more jarring, they regularly sprinkle poorly filtered, real-life photographs into the backgrounds - and they literally used real-life video footage for close ups of the sakura blossoms in episode 9.

All of the above I could forgive if the music direction was better. C-Station used the BGM to propel the story along, make the big reveals impactful, accentuate jokes etc. It was a huge part of the comfy appeal of Yuru Camp. The music this season seems like an afterthought. I don't really notice it, it's almost like they just chose the score at random to fill in the silence. The nondescript score throws off the whole pacing of the show, which seems lacking even outside of BGM direction. I'm not sure if just a function of the anime sticking so closely to the source material, but there are several episodes in season 3 that just end very abruptly. I was left feeling unsatisfied after these episodes, something that I didn't experience during the first seasons. Even though most episodes are light on plot by design, C-Station still found a way to make each one feel like it told a complete story.

The OP is arguably the one area where 8bit has outdone C-Station. When it comes to the ED though, not only did they skimp out on animating 1/3 of the runtime to play episode highlights, there also isn't one instance of unique ED animation to make an episode stand out.
That kind of extra care for the story and characters just isn't present under 8bit.

I'm still watching and enjoying the show, but season 3 doesn't reach the lofty highs of seasons 1 and 2. The Yuru Camp of old was animation that used every tool at its disposal to create an immersive, heightened and idealized version of our world that also felt real and lived in. To me, season 3 of Yuru Camp is relying on the goodwill generated from the perfect comfy vibes of its previous version - those vibes were so damn good under C-Station that most people are willing to accept anything that manages to come close to scratching that itch.

I didn't actually notice the change in character design until Saitou showed up, I just felt something was off despite me binging the previous two seasons. That said, the idea that "it's closer to the manga designs" makes this any better is nonsense. The manga frankly speaking is below mid-tier in terms of art. It's weird people are talking about it as if it's any better than even a run-of-the-mill light-novel turned manga. The first two seasons probably had more detail put into each frame than the manga each panel. The character designs of the manga reflect that it wasn't Afro's drawing skills that sold copies of the manga. Even putting that aside though, changing the character designs like this, it would only be done if the new studio wasn't capable of the old style (because changing the style mid-way through is generally just silly).

As for whether it's still enjoyable regardless ... I was already checking out in the first episode. At first I thought the issue was that I was "allowing myself to get distracted" but that's the wrong mindset, the new season "allowed me to get distracted". I'm not sure why yet but I'm sure I'll figure out after a few more episodes.

Then there's the quality. This is a product prepared by a for-profit corporation, knowing they had this series rushed and underfunded (even by 2024 standards) means I don't really want to like it even if I could. I'd feel dirty if I did like it.

I hate this. I hate this. I hate this. I hate this. I hate this.

EDIT: Thinking about it, I can't imagine they were told in advance they'd be rushed so I don't think it was a being rushed thing. More likely, either the studio or producers believed the simpler designs of the manga would make for either more motion or cheaper production. Still ... Ena changed too much and the direction isn't on par with the previous season. At the very least though, now I don't necessarily have to feel dirty if I enjoy this season.

EDIT 2: And it's largely the OP that's carrying this entire season for me. Overall the change in studio took an 11/10 series and turned it into a 7/10.

So that was why I was feeling off from the beginning. The art style is just not great. How do I say this, it's too bright and cheery, like they are trying too hard to make it cute. I mean season 1 and 2 were also CGDCT but they were different, they evoked a different feeling, I felt calm and as every episode ended I wouldn't even skip the ending, I would just let it play out to the end, cause it was just so good. Meanwhile this, this is disappointing, cause I was really excited for a new season only for a new studio to butcher it and turn it into some generic slice-of-life tourism advertisement.

Just found this thread after watching the last episode.
I didn't notice the studio and slight artstyle change at all.
In retrospect, sure it's there.
But if you don't obsess about a show and instead just watch it to have fun, it's a non-issue.
I'm not reading any replies or comments directed at me at all. I know my truth and if you disagree: that's fine but i couldn't give a damn about :)

Studio change didn't bother me, but the character design did. When I realized they nerfed Aoi throughout the season, I dropped it after 9 episodes.
