so expect something great again https://twitter.com/Nakayasee/status/1662760293292732416

but too bad Kai Ikarashi will not do the AD work this time maybe because his animation and art style (drawing style) are so rough for the style of this show

so that's why this episode was a bit of a departure in the art style in multiple segments, i see. it was pretty cool and well done, seeing even more of that would be awesome as well, though i think there might have been better episodes for that.

Well, personally, I'm would quite fine if he would not do any other episode. I don't contest the talent of this guy, but I'm not fine with this style and I don't think it fits this story at all.

Has to say this is the worst directed episode in the whole series.
We have 9 top animating episodes then ep 10 suddenly drop it like this genuinely shock me.
And is confirmed out source too.

It's not just the LACK OF animation and DIFFERENT ART STYLE, the pacing, the story telling is a complete mess too with scene constantly transitioning and camera all over the place.
Character movement is confusing in general too.
Also the constant shift of 2 completely different art style break the immersion of the episode completely.

I suspect they'd redo the whole episode in the BD version.

The episode was not outsourced, nor will it be "redone", because everything is the way it was intended. Shame you couldn't appreciate any of the talent behind it.

So that's why the direction sucked ass in this ep.
Dub = fake crap. Always.

I can't believe some people think this episode was bad, like, do you even know what animation is about? you gotta be blind or completely braindead

Just as I understand that some people may like this style and this direction, you can understand that some others don't.
I love the exagerated expression of the characters in Tokyo Godfathers because it suits the characters and the film so well. Hana without all her weird expressions would not be the same character.
But here, I particularly liked the subtleties of the animation and acting of the characters, so the animation style of the first part of this episode is a complete put-off.
It looks out of character and distracts from the still important information taking place. Proof is that people are more discussing this difference in style than the contents of the story, contrary to previous episodes.
I also liked until now that humoristic parts of this show was not being exagerated, kept subdued. This is the anti-thesis and it does just make the comic situations more gooffy than funny to me.

I don't care what "animation is about" if the result is an episode that for me was less fun to watch. The style just doesn't fit this story. Not to mention how questionable it is to suddenly throw such a different style in the middle of anime.

I like it when anime get weird and mix in different styles, though I can also get what people mean. It works better in more aesthetically driven shows like FLCL or Bocchi, while for a series like this that has a kinda dense narrative, it can distract from it. I still liked it here, it didn't change the experience too much for me besides thinking "huh that shot looked interesting" every now and again.

Oh wow i didn't read this before watching the episode and i recognized it immediately when I'm watching episode 10, i thought "hey it's must be someone from TRIGGER direct this episode".

People are either going to love it or hate it.

I feel like half of the comments here wouldn't be negative about this if you didn't mention "the rising star of Studio Trigger" part.

The only disappointing thing though would be the lack of any 2d background animation which is one of his signature style.

It could have been incorporated in 2 situations honestly. Once here - https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/229510

The other being this scene of Kiruko running in :

The closest we got to see something like this was here : https://www.sakugabooru.com/post/show/229524

Well, people do that for all his episodes. Atleast we are out of the "It LAcKs FrAmeS" phase that gets associated with the Kanada style. Atleast the posts here aren't as pathetic as some of the ones in the Fate Apocrypha #22 thread.

Big shame they didn't have him board the climax of Gridman Universe (or any part) but I guess it is what it is.

so expect something great again

More like, expect the first bad episode of the series.

This cartoonish style combines with Kill la Kill, Magical Slayers, Bocchi, FLCL, Panty&Stocking, NOT this show. Please, dont do that again.

Well guess static image ppt in the key combat animation sequence is exactly what it's intended.
Also 2 artstyle constantly shifting is exactly what it's intended.
Great.

I'm not discrediting some scene like the freezing part but the part i mentioned only feel jarring in my eyes.
Idk how anyone can defend this.

Yknow , you can have a different artstyle in one of the episodes, but NOT 2 different artstyle constantly shifting every minute or so.
You have to pick one and stick with it in that episode.
Many long running series did that, but nvr shifting between the 2 in the same episode.

I think what ppl dont get is the overall tone of the episode as a whole. You cant save an episode by having 2 sakuga moments of an animation and then the rest of the episode having static images all over the place, weird pacing, constant art style shifting breaking immersion, over-exaggerated expression on a series that try to aim for realism.

I thought the creativeness and expressiveness was really well done. Especially loved the way the last few minutes were directed, felt like a goddamn movie.

My favorite episode so far, the animation was great, especially the comic scenes, they made me laugh a lot.

Also, you can really notice Kai Ikarashi's style, it's a pity that there are people who can't appreciate it.

The episode was worse than the previous ones though. They even used pics only at some scenes ... the way that it felt like the player was lagging lol. But I mean: Trigger is shit and the guy probably doesn't know how to make good stuff is he is related to Trigger. But no problem since most other episodes were great + this episode felt more like a build-up/preparation plot-wise. And if they have better directing once the better plot kicks in again ... fine with me.
