oh man! what a sad emotional episode!
the fight was epic but i think that fight was not serious for both Thorfinn and Snake!
5/5.

Damn I couldn’t feel any more differently! Out of curiosity, what is wrong with expanding on the pages? Most people in the discussion feel that expanding on Arnheid and Gardar grew the emotional intensity of their story and was done successfully. Sure, I believe it dragged a bit, but why is it you feel like this?
A couple of reasons. First of like you said, it dragged on (though I'd say it was more than just a bit), secondly I found the whole flashback sequence and music track frankly banal. It was so obvious and predictable they might as well had Bug-Eyes stand in the corner holding a sign with "Cry now" written on it. Thirdly and most importantly, Gardar is barely a character - he exists solely to give  Arnheid conflict. And unlikely him Arnheid actually is an important and impactful side character. Focusing this much on Gardar's death makes no sense, paints him as being more important than he is and takes away from something actually important coming up soon.

I wouldn't say 5 pages. It was pretty much the entirety of chapter86 of the manga.

A lot happens here, so I don't think they stretched the content that excessively.
I suppose the precise page count depends a bit on where you feel like Gardar's death sequence starts, but it's nowhere near the whole chapter. The fight and it's aftermath take over half of chapter 86 and Gardar's death is merely the very end of it.

The most thing that men scare is the fail feel when they can’t do anything and the writer when he puts this he has played it perfectly.

clowns that seek attention, they've watched freaking 17 eps to just hate vinland saga , they probably should stick with fast paced and flashy fights kind of anime.
Exactly! Let them waste their time though, it's hilarious 🀣

That was best saddest death scene I've seen in a good while and In the end it's Arnheid who has to suffer so much from the loss of both her kid and her husband.
glad to see that thorfinn is back in action, cant wait to see what ha[pens to thorfinn next.

I can't lie I didn't give two shits about gardar or his past. Glad he is dead and we can finallly move on. But one thing is for sure. He really was a man that didn't want to die and his regrets were a huge part of it. Gardar the immortal.

Behold of my awesomeness~

No words can describe how emotional this episode was.
The brief fight sequence between Thorfinn and Snake was intense and impactful. It was nice to see Thorfinn still have his fighting prowess.
He was able to dodge Snake's attacks with his curved sword and counter. He did it unharmed! Which was very impressive. Askeladd would be proud.

The scenes with Gardar were tragic. You have a man who was once a decent and loving father who had a son and a beautiful wife. But he made the biggest mistake of leaving them behind. Both Arnheid and Gardar had to suffer the faith of becoming slaves. Knowing that Gardar has his foot on the grave, he reflected on his past life where he spent time with his wife and son. His last moments were laying on his wife's lap dreaming of returning home. The last embrace of his son was a proper send off to Gardar's character.
I feel so bad for Arnheid. She lost both her son and now her husband.
A part of me died witnessing her burst into tears as she held onto Gardar. Gardar's last words to her were heart breaking.
Rest in peace Gardar. May he rest well.

And how does that make it right? He was a piece of shit and thankfully died.

And the Snake & crew arent saints, but they were rightfully angry after that Gardar murdered their friends. Or do you think that someones selfish goal makes it fine to murder people?
snake literally practiced slavery while gardar only wanted to protect his family and village. Not to mention snake was one who gave orders to hunt gardar while poor gardar was only trying to find his wife.

Considering its 11th century, gardar was actually a saint while snake was just a fucking piece of shit
"poor Gardar" after he murdered people before escaping, yes. Guy was a vengeful cunt

I like Snake and wanted him to get his revenge. You guys arguing shows how well Vinland Saga is written, war is all about perspective and it doesn’t dictate who’s right, only who’s left

he only killed the master because he treated like shit, notice how he didn't kill the woman or the child.

Literally every action of gardar is reactive, he never provoked anybody first. Gardar is wayyy better person than snake and the difference is fucking huge

Biggest comedy anime of 2023 so far.

The fact Gardar killed Snake was a total fkng joke, the best character got killed and it accomplished nothing since Gardar fkng died too anyways, this was so dumb, Snake coul have been a great ally in future arcs.

Also after all that happened Arnheid didn't even tried to treat Gardar's new wound? She had more than enought time, maybe she wouldn't accomplished anything since it was lethal but instead of trying they went on a emotional ride to nowhere.

I'm not trying to be edgy or anything, I legit believe this was a fkng joke, this entire Gardar arc was a fkng joke, it wasn't sad at all, in fact it was infuriating since this dude just won't fkng die bro, like, stop telling us your life trought memories and die already, no one cares.

You’re trolling right? Snake isn’t dead and Gardar was already on the brink of death before Snake stabbed him in the chest. There was n saving him. Like do you have any brain cells?

Everything was perfect. Episode of the year!

I wish they keep up adding more and more of their original content, they're certainly so freaking good.

People who think this is boring need to go watch Black Clover or something, lol.

Gardar, in his final moments, saying that he wouldn't allow his son to be a Viking was so impactful. After this moment, Arnheid did really feel like her husband has returned.

Great, this show is where greatness lies, I cannot stop admiring it. Many thanks to everyone who was involved in producing this masterpiece.

Except im not arguing that snake and his crew were good guys, im saying Gardar wasnt a good guy. And someone as talented in fighting wouldnt have to kill some grunts, but he chose to do so anyhow. Youre genuinely supporting a murderer just because this time he got fucked over. Instead of thinking things through, he just went and murdered bunch of people and got himself and his wife killed, what a hero. He was a bad guy and only reason youre defending him is because he was also a husband and that somehow makes anything he does ok
I hope you realize that snake is a murderer too right? No one in vinland saga is innocent. The fact you're trying to argue that Gardar doing self defense and defending his freedom and his wife is insanity. I hope you also realize as a slave you can't convince anyone to free yourself right? he's been enslave for atleast 5 years.

Of course I'm defending his action when it's based on self defense and his right to defend. Snake's men were initially hunting him, so why can't he do what he needed to do?

Gardar killed his master who was abusing him and did not harm the woman with a child, Gardar killed Lizard who was pursuing on hunting him, tried to kill snake because he had arnheid.

So tell me, how is this needless?

On an episode like this, you'd expect me to have a lot to say, but I actually don't. I don't know how to describe this other than "Peak." Masterful direction and rivals episode 9 of this season as the best episode of the entire series. The colour palettes, the flashbacks, and even though some complained about the slow pacing this episode, having only adapted a single chapter of the manga, I really enjoyed every second of it. The best part is that even though Gardar has been presented in quite a negative light so far, I still felt for him, and for Snake as well, who has been quite a compelling character. Everyone's actions felt justified.

I really don't know what to say, except that this season has been near perfection.

“What kind of monsters surrounded you?”

haha...I thought the translation was "what kind of monsters were you surrounded by?", but yeah, their assessment of each other was hilarious. :p  Loved the fight.
"...our faces marked by toil, by deceptions, by success, by love; our weary eyes looking still, looking always, looking anxiously for something out of life, that while it is expected is already gone – has passed unseen, in a sigh, in a flash – together with the youth, with the strength, with the romance of illusions.” - Joseph Conrad ('Youth')

As the story has been nothing but a slow amazing character development with amazing life lessons, it was missing a huge portion of action/fight scenes, what made this episode amazing was how Thorfinn finally awakens, but not to fight for personal gain, but in order to help someone else. The fight, while it was simple, was more impactful and more hype for me considering the build up for Thorfinn over the course of this entire season.

[Spoilers]
While the fight was a really good treat, it was yet again overshadowed by the tragedy and sadness of the world of Vinland. Gardar's character, while it was short lived, concluded in such a beautiful way. Arnheid knew that it was the end for her husband, so she did everything she could to send him off peacefully. Considering how she considered herself selfish in the previous episodes, it was a great character development for her, hiding the truth from Gardar because she knows that there was no point to tell him that as her husband will see his son soon in the afterlife.

Overall, a very good episode, the build up and character development from the previous episodes amplify the scenes in this one.
