Japanese Media company, GDH, has announced that Youtube, Crunchyroll, and BOST online video services will be streaming new titles from animation studio Gonzo worldwide on the same day as they are released in Japan. The video streams will be in Japanese with English subtitles and will start with The Tower of Druaga: the Aegis of Uruk and Blassreiter anime series. All of these will be available via streaming for free, but GDH also mentioned "fee-based download of high-resolution movie files" in its press release.

GDH added that its "decision to provide its content globally in parallel with Japanese broadcast is an effort to offer equal accessibility and new viewing opportunities to fans around the world, while at the same time showcasing a legal online alternative to illegal file-sharing and downloading."

Oh they did exactly what I've been expecting to; low resolution for free, making money by selling high resolution. Only concern is its Gonzo's work...

This is definitely an interesting idea and I want to see how well it will be implemented.

Like link said, hopefully the translations won't be bad.

I don't want engrish in my anime either o.o But being able to watch a sub as soon as it comes out in Japan is definitely exciting.

If it succeeds, it will definitely open the doors to a whole new way of distributing anime. Maybe it will even evolve to offering the hi-res for free reliying on an ad-based income... But maybe that's going too far, I can already imagine a few issues with that aproach.

I love this idea, so I really hope it all works out! It's just too bad I wasn't really interested in either of these series... but legally and for free, I'll try any series so I guess that point is moot.

Also love the idea. I am willing to pay IF and ONLY IF the service that will be provided is better than the current one.

That means :

1. Better translation. I don't want something that even I with my japanese knowledge would 100% know that the line translated is a complete crap (like with some (subbers?) whose name i won't mention)

2. Better quality. I don't mind a lq version for free, but dammit i want my HQ version fix.

3. Right to download the files. No I don't want to stream HQ and even thou I have a high capacity line, most of the ppl outside of sweden still have lines bellow 10mbit upload/downoad.

4. That the price is reasonable. Something that even a student can afford.

If those "conditions" are implemented well, I personally will stop downloading fansubs as the service provided is better and FASTER. No more waiting for weeks, months or even years to see something translated (often with butchered translation).

Nice. I'm guessing more anime companies will either go with Funi and Bandai or with Gonzo and Kadokawa side on this matter. But I am glad that some anime companies understand what people on the other side of the world feel.

What worries me is that someone is going to buy the high-resolution version of the file and then upload it somehow and distribute it for free. Other than that, this is great but possibly too idealistic an idea.

Yea.. This is the only concern so to say...It will still drop to the ones who support the anime industry and buy stuff and those who just leech even if they have the money to spend.

yea and it's an issue because if nothing changes with the fanbase, then anime companies are basically shelving out all that money for same day subs for no profit.

they're hoping that by broadening their accessibility, they'll net more fans -- and more importantly, more fans that will be dedicated enough to buy their products.

this is why I say it's idealistic and as of right now, overly optimistic in my book.

I can understand that some new fans that discover anime through online streaming might develop into more dedicated fans and some more casual fans that just didn't have easy access to the material before will fall deeper into the industry now that they can watch more of it but I think no matter what really happens, what they're doing now is no long term solution.

People are still going to need the initiative to look for and find online streaming sites. They exist already -- Gonzo is just making it easier to find, faster, and more consistent. Hopefully, this is just a step towards ultimately widening the recognizability of anime and making it a larger part of international broadcasting (TV).

Heres hoping that the push from this moment continues further.

Companies aren't (or at least shouldn't be) concerned with how many people are watching their product for free, but only with the ones who do pay, and those are definitely going to increase. Those who leech would do it anyway, but those who would pay can now get it at the same time, without having to wait for licences. And the company has now a much lesser risk, since costs are essencially just the translation and subbing, meaning they'll be able to make more animes avaiable, thus increasing the number of potential buyers. Not to mention they won't have to share the profits with foreing licencing companies anymore.

Hopefully they'll keep on being smart and bring the prices down since they will also have lesser costs, cause otherwise their initiative will just go waste.

I think it will be inevitable that this will happen because it already goes on with R1 DVDs. Even though fansubs exist around the net for many series, people still take the effort to completely rip the higher quality DVDs and distribute them.

...even a saint needs a soldier to do the dirty work.

LoL, Gonzo has produced a handful of good series. But the majority of them are horrible.

As for their plan to release subs simultaneously via stream it sounds like the idea I came up with months ago in the "An Open Letter to the Industry" thread on ANN

I'm not overly fond of streaming, and hadn't heard of Blassreiter but as I was planning to give Aegis of Uruk a look anyway I'll use the legal avenues seeing as how they're available.
I think offering simulataneous releases has great potential if they do it right. I sort of hope they do - if it works, other companies might give it a try too.

It seems a lot of people are worried about translation accuracy. I don't think this will be much of a problem because:

A) Well, seeing as how the translation will likely be done by someone who is a professional and already works within the industry, it can't be that bad.

B) They will likely have plenty of time to do an accurate translation, probably receiving the episode weeks in advance.

C) It will be better than anything that you could hope to get within 24 hours anyway. Most speed subs are crap and a lot of people seem to be satisfied with them anyway.

Personally, I hope this takes off and does amazingly well. If they make money at this then other studios will likely follow this model and it will only bring prosperity to the Anime industry which will lead to bigger budgets and more high quality shows. They're current market is only Japan with ~130 million people, with X amount of people watching Anime. With a worldwide market the chances of making money are that much greater and can only increase their viewers. This is a good opportunity to push out fansubs and I hope they succeed.

I hope that everyone sees this opportunity to support the industry and bring anime back to the success it once had. If the price is reasonable, I'll be buying the HQ as they come out.

It's a shame that Gonzo is sort of hit and miss on their shows. It seems that for every great show they put out (FMP, Hellsing, Gankutsuou, NHK ni Youkoso!) they also hand out a bunch of weaker shows (Final Fantasy Unlimited, Dragonaut,
Samurai Girl Real Bout High School) Mostly average shows though.

So this was what Gonzo and GDH were up to when they contacted Crunchyroll and started trading ideas. Very interesting. Let's see how this will turn out. There's such issues as sub quality and the quality of the anime they are going to be releasing (Gonzo: now's a good time to make a Gankutusou-quality anime, and NOT a Dragonaut-quality anime), but we'll just have to wait and see.
