While I think the theme songs might be good (either unironically or ironically) it's the actual in anime OST that bothers me the most. Shows like Yu-Gi-Oh Duel Monsters, GX, 5DS, and Shaman King have a lot of their best moments not hit as hard without their Japanese music. Some of these anime in Japanese have my favorite tracks like Passionate Duelist (Yami Yugi's theme), Mind games, Legendary Duel, Impossible Victory, God's Anger Yuki Judai's theme, Sealed Miracle (Exodia's theme), Fang of Critias, and Yusei's theme from Yu-Gi-Oh (teres so much more too I can't list all of the best tracks, the Japanese OST is that amazing), as well as the amazing inserts from Shaman King. The 4kids replacement music just ended up feeling a lot more generic compared to the original compositions and it really impacted the mood of a lot of scenes and the feel of each turn in a duel in Yu-Gi-Oh. The Japanese score felt a lot more tense on the turns our protagonists were struggling and were very triumphant when they were winning or summoning a boss monster. Scenes like Exodia being summoned, Kaiba sacrificing Obelisk, and Yugi's infamous DRAW MONSTER CARD scene against Weevil from Yu-Gi-Oh are just a few scenes that are just so much better with the original soundtrack. Any time a character theme or leitmotif comes up in Yu-Gi-Oh always feel so satisfying as well and 4kids removed a lot of these fantastic musical moments. I haven't watched a lot of 4Kids One Piece but I can almost with certainty say that the 4Kids Ost is completer trash compared to the original with temes like Gold and Oden, Rubber Bazooka, and Overtaken are so engrained into the identity of the anime to me that not hearing them in 4kids will just feel dirty.
TLDR: I don't like the replacement for the actual in show music, the OPs tend to be pretty enjoyable to me but it bothers me how much the generic 4kids music in their dubs hurts the impact and emotional weight of scenes and replaces fantastic soundtracks from shows like Yu-Gi-Oh up to 5DS, One Piece, and Shaman King. I'd genuinely recommend listening to those Japanese OSTs and watching the scenes they are used in in Japanese to get a feel for it.
No one had a problem with bruce faulconer‘s dub music in the 1999 Funi. dub of Dragonball Z.
