The Tokyo Esperion Youth B Team, more than starting their first ever match against Seikyo High, the emotional turmoils between Asari and Aoi already bring down morale even before the match started, and it's not looking good. Aoi has to find Coach Date's answer, or else he will be dropped for 3 months. But what a way to eavesdrop on Fukuda's call with Hana, and Aoi gave his support nonetheless on speaker mode.

The Tokyo Metropolis Match against Seikyo High, and the B team is already in tatters losing 0-3 within the 1st half due to their shrewd formation and personality clashes that led to an error in miscommunications. The only best alternative is to swap the useless players (Asari, Kuroda, Aoi) out, but Aoi persists to clean up in the 2nd half, or otherwise it'll be months of training on end for all, including Aoi.

The 2nd half commences, and Aoi slowly begins to fix things out, but the call for a swap is impertinent if they don't get their act together, something important for Coach Date. And in those last gruelling 30 minutes, every decision and follow-up counts, but slowly and surely, they begin to work in tandem and finally see eye to eye to break Seikyo High's defense and earn a goal.

The curse is broken: Working while not compromising their original positions through eye contact, that's the hallmark of playing soccer, carrying the ball with 3 people. Let's hope that the Esperion B Team is able to make a great comeback.

Triangles, one of the strongest shapes. Aoi's a forward but you need three of them to be able to make a play. Seems like he finally understood his assignment. That high five in the end was really satisfying, espically if you think about the amount of obstacles they had to go go over in order to get to that single high five. Great teamplay in the end.

best episode so far imo, aoi realizing what actual football is, the football he played in the school was just "pass to me and Goals go brrrrrrr", the series was getting so slow for the past episodes but this episode covers it up some what. when aoi said "pass to kuroda" it was massive for the character, loved the episode!

Really, really good. I'm so happy that we finally got another sport series with such high potential. Gives me Daiya no A vibes.

Was grinning so hard at the end after the perfect teamplay between Asari, Kuroda and Aoi.

Aoi somewhat redeemed himself this episode. But goddamn Asahi and Kuroda called him out for being selfish. Then it took him mid game to realise this. Overall it was still very satisfying seeing the three building chemistry.

Whatever the strategy of the team, the passing triangle (or sometimes diamond) is a tried and tested method to break opposition defenses. Good thing that Ashito (and the audience) is learning more on how football is being played. Expect that there'll be more of these new stuff and tactical concepts like this to be presented in the future matches.

What I like the most is how this shows focus is so introspective on the how and the why of the actions Aoi has to take as a player along with how he's learning rather than the usual standard ideas of friendship or uber skill pulling through.

Aoi's callout on Togashi was great as well, reminding both the characters and readers that everyone hear a the same goal of going pro and that the issue wasn't about pride. (Togashi's story is pretty great).

This episodes covered 47-51 of the manga (to the tip of 52 for that slap).
It means we're probably 2-3 episodes away from one of my favourite chapters.

At first Aoi play by himself, now he play for 3 players, so I kinda see in the future he'll add more and more players to his mind, the whole team, the opponent team, the people who support him, the whole world.

Aoi is starting to get a hang on how to play soccer properly by reading his Asari and Kuroda's movements and making eye contact to communicate with them. I was so excited when Aoi made his first assist to Asari even though Aoi had an open shot. Passing the ball back and forth between three teammates is the best way to frustrate the opposing team's defense and create an opening. With the B team being down by one and less than 30 minutes left in the second half, they may have a chance in winning the first match. That high five between Aoi and Asari at the end got me hyped up. Can't wait to see more of it next week.

Its starting to click for Aoi. He can see the vision that Asari and Kuroda were trying to lay out for him earlier. I get know why they were mad at him before, Aoi wasn't syncing up with what they were trying to convey. Using their eyes and movements to tell Aoi what to do next and Aoi just completely didn't understand and made a horribly wrong move. Soccer happens so fast that you can't call out every action you're about to take or tell your teammates verbally what you want them to do. Just your eyes and where you vision is should tell them what they need to do next. Aoi has finally come in tune with Asari and Kuroda watching their eyes and thinking about if he were them here would he need to go next. Having that nonverbal communication with your teammates on the fly like that changes everything and makes it all smoother. We saw how well they did after Aoi became a facilitator instead of trying to score every time. Even subconsciously passing to Asari instead if going for the easy goal himself. Aoi can be more than just a guy whom wants to score all the time. Helping lift your teammates up is important too. In soccer you can't do everything yourself, you need a good group to work well together and be in sync. Aoi looks to have found his line for success.

The one thing this anime is doing a great job at is slowly building up Aoi instead of just going through his progress quickly. Realistically it takes time to learn a new skill or tactic and Aoi finally understanding this strategy after a while is worth the build up.

The football tiers in Japan

Professional leagues:
• J-League 1
• J-League 2
• J-League 3

Semi-professional league:
• Japan football league (JFL)

Amature leagues:
• Regional leagues
• Prefectural league

Now this structure above is for the senior football.

*Exclusively* for the youth right between the regional league and prefecture league there are further leagues in the following order of level:-

1. Prince Takamado Football premier league
2. Prince Takamado Football prince league

Ao's Youth team B i.e. Espersion youth B plays in the prince league.
Since these are "youth" leagues they have an age cap of 18 years i.e. U-18.

Now there is further division, but we will focus on the Prince league.

Prince league is further divided into 9 other regional leagues from Hokkaido to Kyushu, our team is in Kanto region.

(How I know this all? I have watched like some games of the J-League in real life so that said it's clear I don't really follow Japanese football. But as a football fan for over 24 years i did research on the structure of Japanese football when Man Utd and Arsenal ruled the premier league becz Wenger came from J league and changed how English football operated at that time . I was just curious like chi-chan..

Now in the episode, it was just a matter of realisation for Ao to connect with Asari and Kurona.

There is a fine line b/w knowing and not knowing. Fine margins, football is a game of fine margins
What is obvious to oneself can be completely obscure to other.

Just like this episode, It seems kinda obviously to must of us, even Otomo said that they are formation a line but for Ao who played previously with a selfish approach with no tactics and no player to player interactions, it was a literal discovery.

A footballing term was used in this episode at 12:22 overlapping

Overlapping generally done by wide midfielder and fullbacks.
It is when a player is making a run beyond the teammate (winger) in front of them *along/near the touch line*.
At 21:26 Asari overlapped Ao who was holding the defender and as a result Asari got space to run into.

(There is also Underlapping in which a player generally a midfielder or fullback makes a run beyond the teammate (winger) in front of them *away from the touchline*.)

Kinda tough to understand them from text I suggest watch some YouTube clips becz that's the best way to understand it.

There types of movements are used to stretch the opposing defence and created space.
At 18:20 Ao got space to run into as Asari was occupying defenders becz he overlapped.

18:20 and 21:26 are examples how wingers and fullbacks link and co-exist in football....which is sadly is nowhere to be seen at my club penchester..

Oh yea, i like how the photographer girl seems uninteresting at first to the match but gets excited and suddenly know everything after the second thought, showed how indeed nice episode this was xd. Then don't forget about Hana that also come in to support Aoi even after what happens before, and he couldn't even said sorry there xd. The way Aoi solved the assignment was truly an excitement. He wasn't think about making just a goal anymore, as a pride of a forwarder. Its about building up chemistry to the surrounding first, and moving the ball pass forward the goalie for the surrounding, not just for himself. Kuroda getting more cooler, with how he express the eye-contact, and Asari finally had a fine deal with Aoi. Hoo-boy, i can't wait for the next sunday already!

correction, the B team is in one tier below the prince league. I don't know if this competition matches reality, but they explained it in the manga (should've been in episode 10 but it got skipped).

You know something good will happen once Ashito has that "unique" look in his eyes. And speaking of eyes, Kuroda opened his eyes!!! Hahahhaha. I am not sure if he did in the past episodes but this is the first time I saw him opened his eyes.

But anyway, that was fulfilling to watch after Ashito's struggles before. It's a painful process for him but what's important is the end result. And it is also a painful process for me to watch this every week! Each episode feels so short... I can't wait to see how will Ashito further develop as a player. Maybe I should read the manga instead.....

Another advantage of the manga. In the anime we only see the formation on the blackboard before the opening so you really have to pay attention. With the manga you can also read on your own pace to digest all the information.

I'm so happy that the three of them finally clicked, and that Ashito now understands what was wrong with his way to play.
Although the first goal (Asari's) might've been a "fluke" since Ashito passed him the ball without knowing why he did it, Kanpei's goal was completely intentional. The plan was to pass him the ball so he could score.
Ashito has finally learned to stop being so persistent about being the player to score a goal, and instead focus more on his teammates.

What a great episode.

Best episode so far.

It was nice to see things click for Aoi with Kuroda and Asari. His revelation was pretty obvious, but it was interesting to see him get there on his own. Understanding where his teammates want him to be is something he has done subconsciously with his Eagle Eye ability. Now he’s just learning how to replicate it at will.

The animation still isn’t great though.

Okay, so it was them all being on the left. Thanks for explaining. Do agree this is hard to capture in anime. I certainly didn't notice the blackboard positions and had little concept of the specifics before now. It seems much harder to convey than, as a surely random example, volleyball where you can see everyone at a glance.
