In my humble opinion anime can fix any issue you have if you just watch enough, as it becomes a bigger issue.

Depends. Some anime just give me depression. I tend to watch dark toned series a lot, so it doesn't really help with my mental health.

Anime and manga can inspire you to make positive changes and improve yourself. At least it has worked that way for me a couple of times. 😊☝️

anime helps me a lot. it's something i can easily distract myself with so i can avoid thinking about my unfixable messed up life
my only two regrets are that i didn't start earlier and that i can't watch more now as i sleep for the most of the day due to new psych meds

Gurren Lagann helped with my low confidence in myself and changed the way I act as well as my overall view on life.
Other series have helped me in other ways but nothing changed me as much as Gurren Lagann.

The best anime can fix is a self diagnosed condition.

People can ultimately say and think what they want, it just feels like a cheap mockery when they make ludicrous claims such as being "saved" by anime or whatnot. I'm not saying anime can't help at all, but they're designed to entertain, not to treat mental health conditions.

There's zero need to make watching anime seem nobler than it actually is, less than zero if by doing so one belittles actual problems. What's noble about that?

I think what people mean when 'anime saved them' is that it provides them with enough distraction from their depression/anxiety/etc....to not constantly have to deal with it, not actually healing it or anything like that. That would be pretty wild indeed. But as far as escapism goes, anime is one of the best services so I see where they're coming from.
I probably regret this post by now.

Yea basically I sneaked into my reply a

precisely to avoid bashing escapism and a few other peripheral instances in which anime is indeed capable of providing assistence. So yea if that's what people mean by "saved" then I understand the hyperbole and my reply is not for them.

Not really but it is a good distraction. I learned and motivated by some anime that I watched.

Well said. 100% agree with your statement.
When I had depression when I was uni student. I watched anime in attempt to distract me from having bad thoughts and to cheer me up. However, I never say any anime/manga/games saved me because in the end, like u said ,they're just an entertainment.

It is and always has been a distraction for me, a distraction that only made things worse. I like to think if i never returned to anime in 2020 i would be fine now, but thats probably not true. It wasnt the fact that it was a distraction which made things worse, it was the stories themselves which made me spiral. Anime was the catalyst for me, i think, well i guess it just sped things up

Anime may be able to give you a new perspective on life or the inspiration to address a personal issue, so in that regard I agree with the sentiment. But no one should be under the illusion that watching Anime alone will do anything for them other than kill time. Inspiration and perspectives are great, but if you do not ever put them into action, then what’s the point?

Nothing in the world can save you if you are not willing to save yourself.

replying to all people saying anime can't cure mental health condition
ofc it can't. it wasn't designed as a cure from the start
but some mental conditions are so severe that the best psychiatry has to offer is enabling you to live some shadow resemblance of a normal life
and it's very sad and painful to know everyone is going forward while you fight to just stay at the same place in life because if you gave up you'd fall into a pit
that's where people need something to distract themselves with. some people choose alcohol or games or whatever. some people choose media as a distractor. somehow anime is a better distractor than western shows for me. that what i meant when i said anime helps me a lot
i can't claim the same about other people in this thread but i think that's true for many mal users
tldr anime can't cure you but it can't help you avoid thinking of your problems too much.

Anime was a way to cope with my misery as a kid. It was also the first form of art to have ever impressed me. Mind you this is not the anime of today but of more than a decade ago when anime still had individually recognizable stylistic differences (the art was not streamlined like today), the characters had broad appeal in their design and development (not catering to otakus but to the broad general populace), and most of all, the story themes and explored concepts dealt with more philosophical and intellectual matters (war, personal growth, the human nature, the meaning/definition of love, etc).
There's no inherent right or wrong in this universe, but when we think with emotions rather than logic, we make things so.

I don't think anime has helped me with mental health issues, but it has 100% helped me with understanding them. The way anime freely explores character emotion really helps you understand what a character goes through when they have a mental health issue.

Since I've started reading visual novels and watching anime, I've actually been consuming significantly less alcohol.
This is because the kind of entertainment that requires to read stuff to follow a narrative (including subtitles) also happens to require a clear mind as well.
It forces me in to a position where every time I want to have fun, I need to not be on any shit.
So already, it kinda has, since that was somewhat of a problem for me.
