| People like escapism, but I've never "escaped" to a fictional world of any kind. Pretty much all of my favorites either take place in the real world, a dystopia, or the end of the world. So, none of those are particularly good places to escape to. |

| I think you misunderstand what 'escapism' means. All the stuff you mentioned can still work very well as escapism. It just needs to take you out of your immediate, personal situation and that can be done with stories set in the real world or a dystopia just as well. There's plenty of 'realistic' western TV shows that still work as escapism for most viewers because it takes them out of their own life and pulls them into a story. I'd even say the vast majority of stories are inherently escapist and even those who aren't can be used as escapism depending on the person. |
