I am aware that PreCure, at least the older generations, have aired on American TV in the past.

Only the very 1st series aired on TV. I believe it aired in Canada, but not the United States. I wonder why they didn't do more to promote it at the time.

I don't even know, PreCure was perceived as a children's anime for girls at the time? In Russia, shows like Sailor Moon or CCS were broadcast as gender-neutral, as both shows were somewhat outside the stereotypical female media in Russia and Ukraine at the time. Although the subsequent Digimon was considered purely boyish despite the co-ed cast and wider commercial appeal.

@RobertBobert
I knew many boys who watched "Cardcaptors," but Sailor Moon was very much for girls only.

Perhaps, but many were turned on by the fact that their costumes were too revealing for a girly show. Even the Nostalgic Critic is mocking it. Probably, this part of the audience is even larger than the lesbians who were attracted to the show by the ships and the famous HaruMichi.

I have no doubt those people liked Sailor Moon too. But I was very young when it aired, and the TV commercials all made it look like something for girls my own age.

Kingdom is one the best selling ongoing manga in Japan, that's why the anime is getting a fourth season. I guess Japanese are more into historical stuff, even when it's not fantasy.

My wife and I love Kingdom and we live in Canada. My wife read the manga too and she introduced me to it and I really enjoy it. I enjoy historical period piece shows though. I always watch live action ones too and even shows like vinland Saga is popular for historical anime.

Other than that, you don't seem to see too much talk about Kingdom. I do wish there were more historical piece anime out there.

It's been mentioned multiple times in this thread, but, Pretty Cure. PreCure does not have as much as a presence in the west, the only reason why people might know it is because of either the dub of the first Pretty Cure series or the godforsaken Glitter Force version of Smile & Doki Doki Pretty Cure.
Otherwise, it's not very big here.

Symphogear has literally cult following in Japan, but outside barely anyone knows about it.
Most likely because of it being (partially) idol anime.

I see everyone here talking about Detective Conan, but it was HUGE in China when I grew up. It aired on my local TV kids channel all the time. Same goes for many other shows mentioned in this thread, like Doraemon haha.

Surprised nobody said Symphogear. I believe its the only anime that has sold more then its last season for 5 consecutive seasons. It's ridiculously popular in Japan but it's very niche in the west.

LotGH: DNT is actually doing pretty well in Nippon where people don't all go "Ew, the gay men in my battleship anime actually look attractive this time!" and look past the surface.

Both Patalliro! and Visual Prison are still getting new stage plays, live action movies etc in Japan, but are really unknown in the West
I'd guess that Patalliro isn't this popular here because it's just old, and Visual Prison because only Japan's this obsessed with idols

i came into the thread to say patalliro because I've recently fallen down the rabbit hole of that franchise. i think they announced a new stage play like... 2 weeks ago? crazy.

Patalliro is one of the longest manga of all time, and still ongoing. It will never be translated because publishers do not want to commit to translating over 100 volumes. There is no chance that gay comedy will sell enough to rival mainstream One Piece and Detective Conan.

the Yugioh spinoffs after 5DS immediately come to mind
it's a shame cuz this franchise has always been notorious for not releasing the uncut sub to English audiences until very recently yet a series like say Zexal or Arc V still relies on fansubs (bless our fansubbers u all are the absolute best!)

Lupin III, Golden Kamuy (in Japan)
Space Dandy seems to be more popular with western audiences, particularly the US crowd.
Serial Experiments Lain before TikTok kids took over maybe?

Has Lain become a tik tok thing? At my age, it was considered the favorite show of computer geeks.

Lupin the third is insanely huge in Japan. I thought this would be the obvious example but surprised that it didn't get mentioned much. It even has 6 seasons but is barely mentioned outside of Japan/

My personal impression was that this is just another "eternal" franchise that depends on endless generations.

There's one of those old time Masterpiece Theater anime that takes place on Prince Edward Island and there's IIRC pretty much a shrine there.

Found it

It's Anne of Green Gables

Fairly sure Tiger & Bunny is still considered to be one of the best animes according to the Japanese audience, but a lot of western people have never heard of it.

I don't know if anybody already posted this in the thread, but in 2017 Japanese broadcasting company NHK ranked the top 100 anime in Japan.

Here's ones that I like in the list: (Cardcaptor Sakura is ranked number 8 in Japan's list, and it's in my MAL favorites. So if you haven't seen that anime then you are not truly aligned with Japan.)

(based on the principles behind them and clips I've seen since I spoil some stuff before watching)
(I know which ones I like without properly watching them yet)

Mahou Shoujo Madoka★Magica (watched)
Cardcaptor Sakura (watched only 4 episodes so far)
Digimon Adventure (saw clips on YouTube)
Psycho-Pass (saw clips on YouTube)
Suzumiya Haruhi no Yuuutsu (saw clips on YouTube)
Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex (saw clips on YouTube)
Bishoujo Senshi Sailor Moon (watched 8 episodes of Sailor Stars so far)
Re:Zero kara Hajimeru Isekai Seikatsu (watched)
Kill la Kill (watched 6 episodes so far)

Crayon Shin Chan got an English dub, and was on Foxkids or some channel.
Both Shows got Spanish dubs, for South America. So technically both shows are quite global and therefore know.

If anything these shows are so well known. that more than half the worlds population has probably seen and know what they are to some extent.

Yeah......no

To me cult following means a huge number of people know it but nobody outside of the cult knows it,that's shin chan and doraemon and other kids anime shows to me.

Kiba has an english dub but that doesn't mean that it's popular.

Idol anime, most kids shows, some magical girls anime.

Cult following means the opposite, its a show that didn't get any attention, but over time it gets a following of dedicated fans who promote the show and increase the number of people who have seen and enjoy it also.

Crayon Shin Chan and Doraemon are just popular shows in Japan. They don't have a cult following in Japan, and are pretty popular abroad outside of Japan.

I mean if you go by cult following then I can't really say as an asian as in our country it's basically an all time classic and most kids from the 2000s grew up with it.

I haven't heard of someone from the west talking about shin chan or doraemon ever.
Again, this is just from my perspective and from what I have seen.

Doraemon has never been popular in the CIS, but when I lived in Ukraine, its merch was even more common than school supplies and Pokémon toys. Not to mention the Chinese toys that you could buy for a penny. Maybe it was because we actually bought millions of Chinese toys and this cat was a big idol in China.
