So basically what you're asking for is sad/tear-jerker anime. Grave of the Fireflies is my #1 in that regard. Some others most frequently mentioned in these discussions are Clannad: After Story, Violet Evergarden, Your Lie in April, and I Want to Eat Your Pancreas.

Well , it's adapted from an autobiographical novel , so...
As for recommendations , i'll add Tokyo Magnitude 8.0 to what the user above said.

Only Anohana for me.

Manga dramas are better than anime dramas imo

Our Japanese teacher told us that he liked the movie but hated the book. It was so badly written that he dropped it

I appreciate Grave of the fireflies for bringing history to younger generations, but unfortunately it is only known for it's "shock" value and in the next watch you won't have the same effect. Giovanni's Island is to me more on personal level emotional. You know having family history where USSR took the land my family lived in for over hunderd years it has some emotional effect and when it is shown on screen. Oh boy.

Oh boy, grave of the fireflies. that is one i put on my short list of "was good, but ill never watch again"

for me:
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0, especially when the realization sets in this is very realistic, and Japan was hit by such an earthquake a few years after airing. Once you get to the end, rewatching the earlier episodes hits different with the later events in mind

Fafner Dead Aggressor Right of Left. It's quite an old title, but that OVA pulls no punches but its also what got me into the main series

To no one's surprise, I sobbed watching Violet Evergarden. The other one that gets me every time is Silent Voice.
I sometimes forget to finish my sentences.

Didn't cry but I think the movie animation wise is quite stellar. Can't say I'm a fan of it though.

Want more soul-crushing movies? Ok, easy one

1 Hadashi no Gen. Grave of the Fireflies is basically a softer Gen, a manga that has been written by a Hiroshima survivor. As far as I can tell it's closer to being a true story than Grave of the Fireflies. It's also way, way more brutal.

2 Jin Rou. If you want to hate humans as persons, after learning to hate them as a species with Gen. You'll never see the red riding hood the same.

3 Belladonna of Sadness. Best ending on all times, I cry like a river everytime. Be warned tho, the movie is highly trippy and sexual in nature.

Interesting considering the trend among pseudointellectuals to dislike Grave of the Fireflies, btw some people cry with Haibane Renmei or Ping Pong the Animation, so there is... I didnt feel anything special about them but anyways.

Very different tears shed because of Grave of the Fireflies and Ping Pong the Animation. (Both are my 10/10 anime by the way). I shed tears a bit too in Ping Pong the Animation, but it is because it is such a heartwarming story. Grave of the Fireflies in comparison is really depressing ...

And I thought it would be impossible not to cry in the Christmas episode in Ping Pong
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

The only anime to make me do more than feel a little choked up is Banana Fish. It is the saddest piece of media I’ve ever seen and made me cry for hours and depressed for days.
