I was talking with my friends the other day, and out of the blue they mention '86' in their conversation. I thought they were referring to anime even though they have never watched anime in their lives, but it turns out them referring to 86 was a slang term meaning to remove, end usage, or take something out or away. This blew my mind!

The fact there is symbolism even in the title goes to show the shear dedication the author must have taken to create a immaculate story and world. I bet there is many thing I missed on the first run of reading and watching this show. Even though it didn't win any anime awards, this show is my anime of the year. Hands down.

Yes I think it was mentioned in the afterworld of volume 1 that the author took the term “86” from the English language which means rejected.

There are a lot of guesses about the origin of the term, but the original mainly known use of the term was in restaurants in the US as early as the 1920s. They used it to indicate when an item on the menu wasn't available, but they also "86'd" people to indicate that they weren't welcome at the establishment. This ties into the meanings that have already been mentioned; rejected, removed, taken away, etc.

It's a very old slang term, so I'm not surprised that people don't know it. Hell, I wouldn't even know it if it wasn't for my hospitality training course.

yes i’ve worked at a few food establishments & we would use the term “86” when we ran out of an item, like “86 ciabatta” etc.. the manager would mark that item as “eighty-sixed” in the system so everyone else would know & we’d no longer be able to sell tht item. i honestly forgot about this & never once thought about it while watching this show. but it makes perfect sense now lol.

I recalled about the author put a note somewhere about ‘86’ slang meaning, probably in vol 1 epilogue. And yes, it is a really interesting fact about the name. I really don’t know how the author knew about the meaning and was really amazed on how she managed to integrate it into the series as a core of the story. Very clever writing I’d say.

Oh, I didn't note it when I read the novel. I guess this is going to be an excuse for me to reread epilogue?

I'm more impressed with the fact your friend know about the slang and use it in a daily conversation. I've never even heard of the slang before I read the LN and read the afterword.
