Even if in past they used to say very rarely those stuff than right now cause of anime they would avoid saying that x) Wait someone believe in this? Never heard of people thinking that or I never heard french people said that, nor in my family or whenever I met/spoke french, what even this hon hon hon was supposed to mean x) |

But school settings and other more realistic works obviously try to draw from everyday life and the real word. |

It's an exclamation which is used roughly in the same way anglophones use Jesus Christ. We do use Jesus Christ as well but in the past it was considered a blasphemy to use it. I guess Japanese use those exclamations as well but not in the exagerated way you see in anime and manga |

| I'm fluent in Japanese, but I seriously don't even know what Ma Ma is supposed to mean. If it is a long a, then it can mean so-so, and yes, many people use it. Other than that there is mama, which means mother, and pretty much only kids use it. Nobody I know says Ara Ara, except for my former manager who was a guy in his late 40s. |

| ara ara https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/%E3%81%82%E3%82%89%E3%81%82%E3%82%89/ This interjection is made by repeating the word 'ara', which itself is used as an expression of surprise and is primarily used by females. It appears that the meaning itself remains the same, but by repeating 'ara', it gives a reinforcing tone, if that makes sense? You'll notice that in some anime, a female character might say "arara', or even "arararararara" (if i recall, one of the teachers in Kiniro Mosaic said it at one point. the interjection is repeated for effect). Again, that's an expression of surprise. maa maa https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/%E3%81%BE%E3%81%82%E3%81%BE%E3%81%82/ apparently, it can be used to express surprise and is similar to ara ara and oya oya ara maa https://dictionary.goo.ne.jp/word/%E3%81%82%E3%82%89%E3%81%BE%E3%81%82/#jn-7309 This interjection is made by combining 'ara' and 'maa' and is used to express a mild surprise, and is said to be used primarily by females. i guess an English approximation could be ara ara = oh oh. ara maa = oh dear. |

| Only because it may be hard to translate those expressions to English, that doesn't mean that they don't mean anything. "Ara ara" and "maa maa" clearly have meanings. "Maa maa" is used when one is trying to attenuate the seriousness of a situation, be it because one has been rebuked by another, or because two persons are having a heated discussion and someone else appears trying to calm them so as to prevent them from fighting each other. Just reading "maa maa" makes me imagine someone pushing the air in front of them twice slightly with the palms of both hands facing forwards and with a forced smile. |

But I just tried to explain in English, since this is an English forum, with my own words what that expression means. Words and expressions have a lot more meanings than those that are shown in dictionaries. And I think that trying to explain with one's own words the meaning of something is a good way to train one's writing skills and to wonder about how much one is really grasping the meaning properly. |

So you're saying that Tsukik0 should underestimate the level of knowledge of other people instead of recognizing that if she knows a language then there's possibility that other people know it as well? I feel like if I can speak in a language, I would be insulting the intelligence of other people by talking to them while taking for granted that they can't do it as well, even though I can do it. I wouldn't write in Japanese here, but not because I'm arrogant enough to suppose that other people wouldn't be able to understand it, but only because this is an English forum, so it makes more sense to write in English. And it's the same thing if you're starting a conversation with someone on the street in some country. If you're in France it makes no sense to start speaking in German all of a sudden, not because you should suppose that the other person does not have a skill that you have, but because you're in a country in which one normally uses the French language to talk. So I agree with you that Tsukik0 should probably write in English instead of posting some definitions in Japanese from a dictionary, but for different reasons. And I add the word 'probably' here because this is a forum about anime, and anime is in Japanese by definition, so it somehow makes sense to talk in Japanese in this forum, and therefore I don't really think that Tsukik0 is necessarily totally wrong. |

I don't know why you're talking about arrogance. I only said that most people here don't speak Japanese. The community of Japanese speakers and learners on MAL is actually quite small and niche. Most people here don't know the language, either because they have no interest in it, or some other personal reason. Just because MAL is an anime forum, that doesn't imply people are necessarily knowledgeable in the Japanese language. Also, copy and pasting some info on the web is not what i would call "talking in Japanese". @149597871 You'd have to ask someone who has spent a considerable time in Japan. Using maa maa to express surprise like ara ara is probably, probably not common (though i could be wrong). I would expect that in real life, you'd see women using only one ara to express surprise, and very sparingly. |

| @149597871 @DreamingBeats @Mummykun I am sorry Ok I wanted to post the straight source material because it would be most accurate source of information. I used goo辞書 dictionary. I'm a young Japanese girl so I'm giving my personal experience of a young person in japan. Mama and Ara Ara can essentially mean the same thing. Both are used to show surprise or questioning. Ma ma can also be used to calm a situation. Mama basically means: as is or continuing a current state. So basically they are saying keep it in the state of non agitated. Ara originally has the meaning of being rough or wild. It is the same word for storms. but can also be used in surprised or puzzlement situation. Now for usage. As young Japanese I never hear young people day Ara Ara. I've heard some older Japanese women say it Mama is more common. I have heard men of all ages say it. Sorry for my bad English I you have further questions on clarifications I can try to help |
