Wouldn't it be better to just drop them? I don't know. It just seems difficult for me to watch and enjoy anime at an increased speed. I have enough trouble as it is reading subtitles at normal speed.

Just to clarify, I'm not passing any judgment or hate on to anyone that does this. On top of having to process what's going on at a faster rate, I just feel like watching anime at an increased speed would cut the emotional investment I would have for particular scenes. So I posed this question because I didn't know what particular reasons a person would have for increasing the speed of an anime besides just not enjoying it. I'm simply trying to broaden my perspective.

Sometimes, when I'm watching anime that is feeling a little too slow I wish I could speed up some of it. The problem is that I like to watch subbed, and given the differences in speech of Japanese and English, and also that English is not even my first language although the subtitles I always use, it makes it quite hard to read through the subs; and if I'm watching something, I do care for the story, so I'm not okay on skipping dialogues or getting just a glimpse of what they meant.

That being said, I believe that, for those who have no problems following what they're saying (cause either can truly read fast, or watch dubbed, or understands japanese), might be a good method to speed up slow paced episodes to keep up with everything they want to watch.

For example, I sped up Netflix's Castlevania cartoon (1.25x to 1.5x) after I reach the second half of the 3rd season. I don't regret... I wanted to finish it and see things through, but I was already getting a bit bored and wishing to watch something next. I still liked the show, but it didn't took so much time.

However, anything above 2x I think it's way too much and I truly doubt (most) people can efficiently keep up with the dialogues that way if they're watching for the first time. It also depends on the type of thing you're watching... some have stories and dialogues which are easier to follow so speeding it up won't cause harm, but some can be quite convoluted or complex, so speeding it might make everything harder to understand.

I tried it with hyouka because I was getting bored of it, and eventually dropped it. Before dropping it though, I did experiment with watching it at different speeds. Tried 4x speed, I could actually keep up with what they were saying even though it was pretty dialogue-heavy, I just didn't UNDERSTAND what was going on.

Most of your typical generic anime you could actually get by no problem without ruining anything at 1.5x speed. Otherwise, unless you're in it for just some childish laughs, you're just ruining the anime

There's barely any difference on x1.25 speed. It has became a norm for me now. As for x1.5 speed or more.
Hmmmmm, I dont do it much. The only time I remember doing so was during Naruto.
There are many reasons why I completed naruto despite not liking it.

Well back then, when I'm still a kid, I have this "never drop anime mentality" because it's quite hard to download anime with your shitty internet
But damn the anime is boring as hell so I kinda just fast forward it and be done with it

normally it's when i wanna see if there's anything interesting that's about to happen in a boring anime, if i watched 1-2 eps in 1.25x/1.5x/2x speed and nothing really huge happens, i'll just drop it. i don't want to miss an opportunity on watching something good. if i had a mentality like yours, i would've dropped steins;gate long ago without even reaching it's climax.

No as I do watch on speed up everything: Youtube, Netflix and Anime
on 1.5 except for youtube it looks and sounds more natural... if something is boring I am going for 2.0 speed to make it look more interesting and no I am not dropping any anime when I begin watching and no it isn't hard to read subtitles on 1.5-2 speed, especially that I watch anime with polish or english subs.(depends if it is seasonal or anime that finished airing a while ago)

I don't want to be friend with people that do this lol. Really if you are not enjoying don't watch it seems you have a urge to get a +1 more in your complete list or just say to everyone that you "watched that and think it was garbage".

It also can be extremely rude with people that work on it, you break the pace, voice acting, music etc

the most ill do is like 1.25x if its a boring episode and there's really not that big of a difference tbh

But I also don't really do that too often anyways only if its an episode that is boring

I'm one of those but I only do it when I'm in a hurry, sometimes I have to go somewhere so then I speed it up or when I go to bed late and I start to get sleepy then I speed up the ep to finish faster so I don't have to leave it for the next day

as for me, i just did it with some sol anime. Why? bcs i just want to finish it asap, not bcs it is bad, but because of the limited time i have. For me too, i used to read fast so i don't have problem with the sub getting fast too.

That doesn't mean i don't like it

I only speed up when I'm rewatching something. And even then only really some episodes/arcs like my most recent rewatch (HxH 2011) I only sped up some parts of Greed Island.

You don't get it. These people simply want to increase their list size and catch up to bigger lists because that's all they care about, list size. But they don't have the passion for anime and the patience to just keep watching for years and years and organically grow their lists so they are taking shortcuts to filling them up as much and as fast as possible. At this point it's not about watching or enjoying anime, it's all about collecting those +1s on your list. Somehow they can't just completely lie and add stuff to their lists without watching, which would be more sane, but instead they actually spend time on watching butchered versions of anime that can't be enjoyable. But as far as I'm concerned if you watch a show with double speed you essentially haven't seen it at all and all your opinions are as invalid as if they came from someone who never touched that show.
I probably regret this post by now.

Off topic but Castlevania truly is amazing although a little slow paced.

The fake is of far greater value. In its deliberate attempt to be real, it's more real than the real thing.

There really people who've done this? Crazy shit there. Why bother with the show if you aint looking to see it properly for what it is. Even if its a long ass series, if you like it and are committed, then watchin it properly makes sense. Skipping filler is alright but speeding up episodes unnecessarily dont sound cool.

lmao all the vitriol in this thread at people who speed up anime... like, i'm sorry i can read subtitles at 2x speed and still understand the story, i'm just built different.

nah but for real though, i don't speed everything up, but when i do, it's because of my adhd. it can be hard for me to focus sometimes, and in those cases it's just easier for me to get through it faster. it doesn't necessarily mean i dislike it or i'm not appreciating it.

I speed things up if i'm near the end of a disc on the dvd and just want to knock it out and be done for the night.

Honestly, if i get near the end, i hate dropping something and would rather just knock it out.

Sometimes I start an anime because i kinda find the premise interesting, but I know that it's going to be a low to mid tier anime. Something like In Another World with My Smartphone. Cool premise with new magic systems and people explaining their motivations? Cool 1x. Third fight in a row where I know the OP MC is going to one shot someone and the girls are going to squeal? 1.5x.

But, I still do want to watch these shows through to the end because I want to know what happens, and its not like I particularly dislike them (6-7/10), they just get either really slow or repetitive at times, so I speed it up.

I don't do this with shows I'm fully invested in, so it's not a norm or anything, but I don't get why people are making such a big deal of it. If I choose to speed something up because I'm invested enough to want to put in the extra effort to watch it faster, but not want to put in the time because I feel the show is dragging its feet, I don't think that's disrespectful to the creators.

The answer to this question is very simple. People speed up the anime to get to the interesting part of the show. No one wants to hear characters waste our time by talking exposition about a place, person, or thing. No one wants to waste their time if the plot of the show is moving very slow. Its why a lot of people like to drop shows half way through which they miss out on the interesting stuff of the show.

I usually speed up to around 1.25x to 1.5x and still manage to understand everything that is going on while also enjoying myself.

just cause i'm watching it sped up doesn't mean it's bad or i'm not enjoying it. i have plenty of 9s and 10s that i've watched at 1.25 or 1.5 speed.
given the option, i always speed up what i'm watching. Netflix, youtube....other sites. it's usually only up to 1.5 speed so the subtitles are still very readable. just want to consume shows fasters. i got hundreds on PTW. if it's like a dialogue heavy show like odd taxi tho I normally watch at regular speed.
also most anime has a weird pacing to it that lends well to being sped up. one piece at 1.5 is like a different show.

I speed up every show on 1.5 speed because anime characters talk so damn slow unlike actual Japanese people, which kind of improves my listening skills. Also, some shows are boring as hell -- and I do drop them after finishing an episode or so. I never skip scenes though, I just hate how slow anime characters can talk at times.

Sometimes it just works for me. I can internally convert sped up media to normal speed in my brain. Though not always. Presence of songs, highly concentrated important dialogues will deter me.

Currently, I simply don't do this, unless I know I am going through a weak section of the story or a filler.

The only show I did that with was Cutie Honey (1973). It was fun in the first half, but got slow during the second half. It was a 25 episode anime, the plot was pretty repetitive and easy to understand even after being speed up.

At a time, I wanted to increase the number of retro anime on my list, so I was determined to complete it!

I watch one piece at 1.5 speed. According to me they speak very slow as thamey adapt 1 chapter per ep, so most of what they will be talking will be filler. Action sequences are already a lot filler. Whene I think something important is going to be revealed i slow it

I can still read all subtitles at 1.5 speed. It doesn't really affect anything for me other than the speed at which I finish the episodes.
