Tenshi no Tamago
I watched this movie 6 times and I still don't know what really happened there.
If you're a fanboy, please don't waste my time.

Watch more movies, please.

Perhaps, this is hell.

Tenshi no tamago(angels egg) is the most confusing for me because there is almost no dialogues in the movie even Oshii don't know what the film is about.

Seriously none.
I barely need to use my brain in any anime/manga. These shits are easy to follow.

Oh. Shit. Just started on Evangelion. I'll have to take note of that lel

I didn't think so, but I've had some people tell me they thought Ghost in the Shell was too complex or high IQ for them and they didn't get it. Seemed to me like it mostly came down to switching bodies and political disputes between the districts.

Serial Experiments Lain, for sure. I had no idea what was going on half the time... but I loved every second of it! It's such a trip!

RahXephon was quite convoluted especially on the last episodes. Had to look up some explanation to fully understand the whole thing. I did enjoy the hell out of it though, will rewatch soon.

Ghost in the Shell, however, was pure incoherent bullshit that merely bored me to death. Felt like one of those shows that was just confusing for the sake of being confusing, with its core message not even being too profound or rewarding in the first place.

I spent 2/3 of my time watching Flip Flappers not understanding what the fuck was going on. And tbh, I'm still not entirely sure I know for certain what was happening lol. Cool anime nonetheless.

I think it was Akira, tho that is probably more because how much material they had to put in so little time.

Evangelion, without a doubt. Maybe "Island." That concept of time travel just being an infinite, purposeless loop was just beyond ridiculous.

Serial Experiments Lain - Have to say it was quite the experience seeing my potential theories getting constantly crushed with each new episode I watch.

Tenshi no Tamago - Understandable given that even the director didn't know what the fuck he was doing.

It's simply about people bonds. Siblings bond, friendship, romantic love, obssesion or whatever. And what conflicts those bonds and human feelings will make. (some) People will do anything for what they think is important, including fight againts the world/fate.
Yeah, probably there are some allegory, but I believe it's not really important compared to the spirit of the show.

It's kinda similar to TTGL, where having the will is all what you need to defeat your enemy. No need to overarching plot and world building. Perhaps that is why both are my favorite anime.

I would advise you not to watch Sarazanmai then.

I would have to say Occultic;Nine. That anime felt so fast paced. Its one of the few anime I had to actually pause multiple times to read the subtitles.

I don't think there was a title which would confuse me with plot or anything like that, so the only title which made me kind of confused was Kara no Kyoukai as the episodes/movies are not in chronological order of timeline x) if I remember correctly the timeline order was (by numeric of movies)

Has to be Mobile Suit Gundam F91. First of all, it was originally meant to be a TV series which got cancelled and was compressed into a movie. It's a shame because the movie has some very good animation and potential.
The next would probably be Akira which also suffers from the same problem as F91 in the sense that it tried to fit the Manga series into a single movie which resulted in a confusing plot to follow.

Mawaru Penguindrum. I followed the first half easily enough but it became a bit of a mess as it went on. Initially the symbolism was pretty well-incorporated and clever but then it just slaps you with some meaningless and confusing symbolism in lieu of actually writing a proper story and characterization near the end.

Definitely Serial Experiments Lain. I'm fairly confident that I understood almost everything from every anime I've watched, save that weirdly amazing trip of a show. Sonny Boy is a recent one that gave me similar feels.

I don't think you can ever logically explain how anything happened the way it did on their physical plane, it'll fall apart if you pick on stuff on a superficial level (like the plot) - each and every law of science was broken by that show.

Same here, I didn't find it to be that high IQ or complex. I think it makes sense if you're paying close attention and patiently waiting for it to explain things later.

I didn't sadly. But I guess it's just a problem I have with these "atmospheric" shows. I tend to prefer it more if a story is being told mainly through the actions of the characters or the basic confines of its narrative. But with stuff like Ghost in the Shell, Texnolyze or Ergo Proxy, you don't really get much of that and instead you're presented with these somewhat big, unfamiliar worlds/concepts where the audience is somehow forced to make sense of what is happening in, to fully comprehend everything else. It just seem like an unnecessarily challenging way of presenting a less rewarding message to me. Though admittedly, I didn't really fully comprehend those shows either so I guess that is the failure on my end. So yeah, their probably just aren't for me. I haven't fully given up on GitS though, I'm still interested on proceeding with the other entries as I've heard their a bit less challenging than the movie and I'm still open to rewatching the movie if I ever find the mood for it sometime.

Understandable. The show (Stand Alone Complex) is quite different from the movie and I suspect that you have a much better chance of enjoying that.

I recognize I don't have it logged, but I did watch a few episodes of FLCL aaaaages ago, and bounced off it hard because I wasn't ready for its brand of WTF yet.

I would say the most confusing anime I've completed is Paranoia Agent, which absolutely rocks because it really is the only anime I know of with Lynchian vibes. It's extremely strange and psychological, but not pretentious so much as that it operates on dream logic a lot of the time.

I was also hella confused about Baccano the first time I watched it.

and of course the Monogatari series is kind of confusing at times, especially when they're talking for long stretches about nothing in particular, and you have to wrack your brain to put together the pieces and realize why the fuck they're talking about this and what deeper meaning it has because the author absolutely loves to bury critical character and story information inside dense, meandering conversations. it's the biggest selling point of the series for me, but I recognize and respect that many people can't fucking stand it. I enjoy being confused if the vibes are good and I have confidence the writing is purposeful.
