I was about to say "what are you talking about, 86 isn't unpopular at all!"
But you said "less" popular, and then I realize, dang, you're actually kind of right.
When you check the seasonal anime page, it's currently eight place, and they sort it by popularity. I understood it being under komi-san and mushuko tensei, which are the 2 most popular, but I would've expect it to be 3rd place. An anime original, takt op destiny, is higher? Platinum end is higher? MIERUKO-CHAN is higher? The ASSASSIN ISEKAI is higher?? THEN we have 86 part 2. Finally.
Now I'm thoroughly enjoying all the airing anime mentioned above (...except platinum end, it's getting kind of lame for me), and it's easy to understand their hype. Takt op is being made by madhouse and mappa. Platinum end is written by the death note authors. Mieruko-chan has some freaking high quality thighs. The assassin isekai, despite looking overwhelmingly generic, is actually pretty damn good- but I'd see it more as a sleeper hit of the season; and yet it's higher than 86 part 2, which is a continuing series from what was highly acclaimed when the first cour aired in the spring. Now while the positions in popularity don't REALLY mean too much, since the differences are only a few thousand between them, it's a difference nonetheless, as I personally expected 86 part 2 to be higher in popularity than it is. Maybe that will change nearer to the end of the season when word of mouth goes around singing part 2's much-deserved praises.
Maybe it's because a lot of people were turned off by the first cour, myself included. I didn't dig it that much, almost decided not to watch part 2, but I decided to give it a chance, and I'm glad I did. Because so far, part 2 is freakin' amazing brah.
At the moment, 86 (part 1) is on the lists of 390,000 MAL users. 86 part 2, on the other hand, is only on 163,000 lists. Sure it's still airing and more people will pick it up later, but that still goes to show that not everyone's eager to continue to watch the next part, if they will watch it at all. That's less than half the users from the first part.
Nonetheless, let's be glad that this 2nd cour got adapted and aired rather quickly, and appreciate that A-1 pictures is doing a masterful job at adapting the source material (which I haven't read, but still I'm sure they're doing it more than well enough, if not even better). |
