In many cases that vocal group isn't that small of a minority.

I disagree. As OP said, that would mean that every single fanbase sucks because there are retards in it. I do believe however that some fanbases suck more than others.

Depends on various cases. Attack on titan fandom has a VERY vocal and toxic minority and they even spread influence to the non-toxic parts. MHA is even worse and far from saving.
Minor toxicity like SoL fans don't spoil the bunch.

I dunno about toxic, but what I've seen from Chainsaw Man fans or posts associated with the series was.

- that they created bait threads where they compared it to Jujutsu Kaisen
- will it become a top 5 anime scorewise?
- will it be more popular than X?
- claims that it will break the internet
- it's not your generic battle shounen
- woof woof

There's legit nothing positive that stood out to me xD

Or let's look at AoT fans. There are so many of them that even if only 1% of them are annoying brats it can have a huge impact on how the fandom is perceived.

Saying a fandom is toxic is always a generalization. If you follow that logic you could say most active fandoms are toxic, but it would also depends where you hang out. One Piece fans on MAL are rather chill, but from what I've saw they go wild on other sites..you know which ones.

As a rule of thumb. More hype = more vocal fans = more toxicity

It often escalates when a large crowd of like minded people comes together.

One Piece episode 914 & 915 & 1027 were a mistake and 957 brought the salvation - FMmatron

Yeah, but when fandom is just another vehicle for advertising a commodity it's probably an idea you want to distance yourself from anyway.

Well, through out time we have seen most fan bases have been ruined by an annoying minority, Mha AOT DBZ Naruto hxh ect., so I got to agree with this

the proverb is applicable in any situation. there are some annoying people anywhere you go. but regarding fandoms, I don't give two shits. I watch anime for my personal enjoyment, not to feel as a part of community or whatever :)
Am I a good person? No. But do I try to be better every single day? Also no

I think they can encourage toxicity among newcomers.

not really, there are lots of crazies FMAB fans who constantly create bots to downvote other anime and upvote their beloved but there are normal cool fans too like me who are very honorable and criticize the crazies

But popular opinion can gang up on unpopular opinion. So is vocal majority better than vocal minority?

But I agree with all fandoms are toxic regardless.

I don't think so. FMAB fandom, for example, has a bunch of toxic people (the ones giving score 1 to any anime that is a threat to FMAB #1 position). But I know most of them are nice people

Yea. The more vocal they are, they get more annoying. I tend to stay away from most anime fandoms because of that.

i think even organizing people into 'fandoms' as some kind of conglomerate group is pretty arbitrary. They wouldn't say that you think the 'xyz race' is toxic...they aren't official entities with rules or leadership
