Says bottom rung animators were tasked with correcting drawings instead of doing their own animation

Freelance animator Mushiyo explained why they chose to leave studio MAPPA in a series of tweets on May 14. According to Mushiyo, who worked on the most recent season of Attack on Titan, the studio engaged in unhealthy work conditions during the series' run. (Note: while the tweets were initially public, Mushiyo has since locked their account).

Mushiyo questioned their decision to work for the company, describing their experience of being asked to fix drawings over and over and over again until the sun came up as why they quit. They criticized MAPPA's decision to work on four shows at the same time instead of properly training its team so that such corrections wouldn't be necessary. Mushiyo compared the work environment to a "factory" where bottom rung animators are tasked with correcting issues instead of drawing.

According to Mushiyo, their complaint wasn't unique. "As far as I can tell, about 80% of the employees had similar complaints at the time."

MAPPA took over animating the popular Attack on Titan anime series from Wit Studio starting with the first part of its final season. The series premiered in December 2020 while MAPPA was also working on Jujutsu Kaisen and Gymnastics Samurai. Zombie Land Saga Revenge debuted in April. Mushiyo regularly shared their own artwork while working on the Attack on Titan Final Season on Twitter.

Despite this is MAPPA’s problem, we all know that every single worker in Japan(not just animator) are working like this. In Japan, working for 12-14 hours a day is a completely normal thing. And do you get paid well, its all up to what you are doing and how much the boss want to paid for you. We all know Japan have a high suicide rate right. This is just one of the reason out of all reasons.
Welp since MAPPA are recuiting new members for both CGI & art, its either they want to have more people so works could done easily without any overwork employees or they will make more people become robots. Lets wish for best things to come.
Just to make this clear: only ONE employee have left MAPPA with 80% people are complaining but havent left yet. In the future, we dont know. But for now, only 1 employee left. I saw a lot of people giving news that 80% employees left, so I just want to make this clear.

maybe they meant this not so old news?

"80% of animators quit within their first three years of working with a company" and that their average wages are very low

Thats was for all anime studios. That was when MAPPA was not very popular(with Terror in Resonance, Yuri!!! on Ice & Kakegurui being their most popular work) . And news Ive seen is 80% from MAPPA, not from all anime studios. Thats why I want to clear the news out.

Mappa animators should seriously consider transferring to Bones.
They aren't gonna last long like Madhouse did and I don't think CSM will be affected because they WANT to animate it.

@AbelNhom yeah but that one employee can ruin the reputation of the entire studio.I heard he doesn't even take part in animating major moments.

It's a shame Maruyama left Mappa just like Madhouse. This kind of thing is probably exactly what he didn't want.

That could ruin the reputation for new people or people that dont know much about Japan. But for somebody that have search about Japan for a long time, I already know this is a problem in all companies Japan, not just anime studios. This is not a new thing for me. But I still hope that this problem will be solved soon

This is how they either solve the problem or ruin them even more. Welp lets see how it goes.

I have heard that japanese never complain much about work, especially with their peers. So if they're complaining, it must be really bad.

Anime was it's best 20000 years ago, when cavemen drew art with real depth.
Modern anime is all garbage. I miss great old days of anime.

Pretty sure it just bad environment like deadline too short or something. Because I dont think working for like 12-14 hours is a problem is Japan.

But thats the case with all studios the animators work is really really really hard and they don’t get paid a lot normally but if the studio has a lot of time the work becomes a little easier but most studios animate the animes in a long time but sometimes they got limited time like the last 3 seasons of the seven deadly sins and thats also why the animation is bad thats not the fault of the studio its the fault of the manga publisher and tho e only manga publisher that does that is kondansha its just stupid.

MAPPA as a studio can decline the offer if the upper management wants its workers to not be overworked though, i even made a thread about the difference in business philosophy of BONES and MAPPA here https://myanimelist.net/forum/?topicid=1922197

Nah. Unfortunately, Mappa has too much money in them to fail. Where Madhouse failed in being bought off, Mappa embraced the horrible situation in the anime industry. This is not even uncommon beyond Mappa. Wit had issues with this too.

its normal in the Anime Industry as a whole but there is no reforms or improvements being made

thats why there is an Animator Shortage Crisis going on since 80% of new animators quit after 3 years

so if this keeps up more 3DCG anime will be made lol

Hate to say that I'm not surprised. MAPPA would have to be hellishly pushing employees for them to be taking on projects left and right like this. It always seemed absolutely ridiculous lol.

80%, you say?

In all seriousness, I hate the capitalism approach to art and it shows how little it actually works for anyone except shareholders & companies that don't give a shit what closure the fans or creators get. Attack on Titan, regardless of its ending, as an anime has been nothing short of incredible. But if it doesn't meet the business quota, then fuck it let's move onto Isekai Smartass because better merch incentives.

Everybody’s heard at some point that animators are sometimes underpaid and overworked so it’s not surprising I believe him and there’s others like him it’s a sad reality and the work place has to be hectic trying to animate Aot s4p2 then you have other anime like chainsaw man and JJK 0 the movie
