As you watch more anime, does rewarding anything with 10/10 get harder?

Would like to start off with when I say 10/10, I mean like top 3, top 5 or top 10 best anime you've ever watched, and not the kind of 10s people like to throw around easily. I don't have a problem with that but that is not why I am here.

In recent time I haven't really found anything exceptionally great, not including sequels from anime I already like too, such as AOT for example. Anyways does the title check out for you?

I don't think it gets harder for me, it's just that I didn't encounter a 10 recently. things can change

I don't care enough about scores, its difficult to sum up an entire anime with just a number. But I do agree that there aren't many anime worth rewatching :(

That 10/10 spot is definitely hard to give because once its given it feels like other good anime lose value

I still haven't seen much that the medium has to offer, so I may potentially find something that I think is excellent.

why would you expect 10/10s to show up so often? Is its just for a chosen few masterpieces anyway it makes total sense they are rare.

But yeah we had great animes in the past but nothing quite 10/10 for me.

Not really. I know what I like. It's all about whether I encounter the right show for me. And what do you mean by "the kind of 10s people like to throw around easily"? I have way more 10's than you and your "top 10", but that's just because I enjoy more anime than you do.

Finding a 10/10 is really hard for me. I completed over 600 series and only have two 10/10s. The last 10 I gave was 2 years ago. But I hope to find new 10/10s

It definitely gets harder and I sometimes rewatch old anime that I gave a 10 and most of the time lowered my original score. I think I have about 6 or 7 series that have 10s.

Finding anime with a rating of 10 is becoming rare. The last anime I rated 10 was Code Geass.

I agree, but it's more a matter of taste I guess. The most recent two shows I gave a 10 are both AoT sequels.

Since there are many great adaptations of the manga I love it isn't that hard actually. I do tend to change my ratings over time though.

But if you don't watch just the new seasonal anime then you are bound to find some great anime. And honestly, all the anime I gave a 9 are also really great, so it's not like bc there aren't many 10/10, the quality is declining.

Excluding sequels, there's just one anime from the last 6.5 years in my top 10, and just two 10/10 in the last 4.5 years. Recent anime aren't bad, but I feel like 2006-2014 >> the rest of the 21st century.

It's true that the more you watch, the harder it is to be impressed, but I also happened to turn some 8s and 9s into my favourite 10s when I rewatched them.

Let's see... I started watching anime in early 2017 (January, if I recall correctly)

The latest anime to crack my top 10 was Yozakura Quartet -HANA NO UTA- which I watched late last month. And only rated 9/10
The latest anime to crack both my top 5 and my top 3 was JoJo part 4, which I watched in mid-2019.

I wouldn't say it's gotten any tougher, if only because I've always been tight with my 10/10s. I only had one 10/10 (Nichijou) for about a year, before I saw R.O.D THE TV and Free! Eternal Summer. And those remained my only three 10/10 anime until I saw JoJo's Bizarre Adventure: Diamond is Unbreakable. Now I still only have four 10/10s.

To be fair, I've been watching anime since I was a child, but at 2015 I retired after watching the monstrocity that is Boku no Pico alongside my cousins. Thankfully at 2016 I started watching JJBA Part 4 and my love for anime became even stronger.

Giving 10/10 is hard, mainly due to one factor: If I gave a 10 to literally anything, 10 would lose it's value for masterpiece. Anyways, here are my 10's just in case you don't want to check my list:

- Jojo: Diamond is Unbreakable
- Spice & Wolf S1
- Steins;Gate
- Dorohedoro

Seems like the obvious answer to this is yes, it does get harder to reward a 10/10. Maybe after watching so many anime you will even go back and question what you gave a 10 and what you were high on at the time to give it such as score. This has happened to me before and even now I go back to my list and alter scores to fit my opinions on them in the present. Although the frequency on these checks has lowered as I've watched more so who knows maybe my taste in anime is getting less trash.

Nah, the more I watch the more I know or appreciate what a great show is. The truth of the matter is if you are going by the criteria of 10/10 meaning the top 5 or 10 greatest anime you've ever watched its only natural that as you watch more then your top 10 list is more refined and harder to crack with a new show.

Its the same thing with non-Anime. How many people lists of 10/10 top movies of all time contain more than 1 movie from the last decade? Usually such lists are filled with classic greats.

If I was going to by the other definition of 10/10, meaning a flawless masterpiece which can't be improved on I can honestly say for me the only one that can reach that is Death Note. I could list at least a dozen shows that I could give a 9.5-9.7 but a real 10/10. Its a unicorn.

Not really, I'm a bit more selective with my 10's than when I first started watching but I've changed my early ratings to reflect that. I still hand out 10's when I feel like there's something that deserves it and I do not view my past favourites with rose tinted googles.

It's kinda true for me cause I liked to give 10 to pretty all shows. But after sometime it really started to go downhill. And now rarely, but sometimes I feel tough even when giving a 9.
But that's not because I don't like that anymore. Cause I won't change my ratings. As they are the proof of how I felt after I watched it for the first time.
And also still of I feel like giving a 10 I won't hesitate or be picky cause it may affect my favourites. I'll give a 10 to any show that I think deserves it without hesitation.

Nah not really. Giving out tens has always been very selective and rare for me. Because the section is masterpiece and I’m not one of those people who just call everything and anything a masterpiece just because I enjoyed it. But I guess I did use to be pretty loose with my 8-9 section. I think after making my own rating system with detail I became the rater I wanted to be.

It's just a number, but the titles can go with it aren't many. That's all. But I wonder why your score is 2.43, but still made this thread. I'm curious.

Last I gave a 10 to an anime was five years ago but I'm not too fixated on that. There's still a lot of great stuff I found that are a 10 in my heart I just don't consider them a truly objective "10" by my standards.

Definitely. Over time, I've actually lost more 10/10's than gained due to reevaluation for certain series
