I think I'd like to get into bullet hells, knowing my affinity for challenging shooter games.
Touhou definitely seems like a fun series.

Son where would I start?
And what would I buy?

Get the sixth game and if you like what you see move up the series in the order they were released. The decimal games are fighting games or weird flying reporter simulators (9.5). 9 has a two player mode. 1-5 require an emulator to play on a modern PC. This page has everything you need to know about pc 98 emulation including links to emulators:
http://emulation.gametechwiki.com/index.php/NEC_PC-9800_series
EDIT:
forgot to mention that 16 and 17 are on steam. Idk the "proper" way to get the others I just torrent them. I heard that you can only get them directly from the developer at comiket but I haven't looked much into it.
EDIT 2:
The games are in japanese but translation patches are available online. There isn't much story in the games though. Idk where the wiki gets all that lore.

Okay! Thank you! I'll probably get 6 then.

Start with PCB, remember touhou isn't a JRPG about cute anime girls, its a shoot em up arcade game, it's funny how many of my friends went in expecting that. I would say that you should go through the windows era of touhou before getting into the PC-98 era of games, looking at the old touhou designs, is weird trust me start with the windows era

Listen to the music, most folks tend to get into the fandom this way.

I'm not sure myself, but I'd say to look through the games in the franchise, and try out one that seems interesting to you. There's more to Touhou than the shmups.

Just play the sixth Touhou game and you'll be fine.

Secondaries don't play the games though.
