It is definitely big brain from you. You might loose some value (but you're not loosing enjoyment you don't get anyway) and you don't have to leave with a feeling "Man, I couldn't get through it so I can't talk about this show."
Of course, it is your decision to make whether it is worth to continue watching and whether the part is not important.
I didn't skip through the infamous endless eight of Haruhi's just to get the same feeling as others watching.

I only do that if the series turns out to be boring. Luckily, this haven't happened often. Last time I set the speed to 2x that was when I had to watch Beyblade ๐Ÿคฃ I started that series like a decade ago and like many people I hate leaving things unfinished, no matter if it's a movie or a series. So to ease my pain I increased the speed.

I always watch anime at 2x speed. I just feel like the characters are all speaking to slow. I have a really high reading speed. To me, watching at 2x speed is basically the same as watching at the original speed. I can auto-tune the mood, I can feel the music, I can notice the details in the drawings. It's just more time-efficient watching at 2x speed, while not losing anything, at all. But that's just me taking advantage of my ability to read very fast.

Anime are meant to be for fun, I don't understand why you would wanna force yourself to watch something you wouldn't enjoy, just drop it .... I can tell you're doing 2x speed so you can add more animes to your profile to flex, who gives a damn , just enjoy anime and drop any that u dislike

Same,I watched pretty much all of post-timeskip One Piece at 2x speed, and I could follow everything and the pacing felt normal.

I usually don't watch anime at more than 1x or occasionally 1.10x speed,I only do it when I get bored and I don't want to drop it,or when I want to get through an anime faster. I did that for early Gintama, which was slow, and trust me the gags were funnier in 1.5x speed(personal opinion).

it really depends on the show.

i find 1x speed anime to be frustratingly slow - usually 1.5x is about the right level to speed it up to a normal conversational speed. however, some shows like One Piece feel about right at 1.3x (interesting that many think this is the prime candidate to speed up), many others can be 1.7x and still be fine. some of this isekai crap i'm more than happy to blast through at 2.5x because its pretty shallow nonsense mostly

When I first taught myself how to speed read to help me get through schoolwork, I couldn't watch anime at normal speed for months.

Different people process info at different paces. It's dumb to say "watch at 1x or drop it" cause everyone is different. That would be like requiring someone to have a timer when they read manga to ensure they don't read "too fast".

I never would have been able to experience older shows like Mazinger Z or Mobile Suit Gundam without the help of 2x. I also never would have had the time to watch all of HxH 2011 TWICE without going through it the first time at 2x.

Requiring people to experience a show in a certain way is just dumb gatekeeping.

To me, if you have to resort to watching at higher speeds, then you are clearly not enjoying the show and should probably just move onto things you do like. I would rather just not watch anime than watch something in a way other than the creators intent.

The exception I can think of is if you are watching it specifically because you don't enjoy it, you know it's terrible, and you just want to see how much of a train-wreck it becomes. In those situations, where it's a 1/10 type of anime, then I think watching at higher speeds is probably fine. However, I would hesitate to be vocal about opinions on that show since you didn't watch it as it was intended. Meaning: you wouldn't have much right to complain about the music or voice acting, since your experience of those things was completely different from the intent.

"They escaped the weight of darkness,
to forge a path into the marrow of the spirit.
They chose to drown in a deeper vacancy,
an emptiness that quells the null,
a pool for the forgotten..."

Watching at 2x speed would ruin the music and Voice acting for me. Not to mention it would hurt the story and dialogue significantly. People underestimate the importance of a pause or even just silence in a conversation. If I got to the point where this was the only way I would continue a series, I would just drop it. Never had that feeling though.

Have to hard disagree here, 2x speed changes pitch of voices and flow of music. Not to mention dialogue needs to have pauses and even silence at times. Little moments like that are important for a story and would no doubt be ruined by speeding through it.

Also if you watched HxH twice at 2x speed, you could've just watched it once at normal speed lol. This is probably the only post that I can't find a middle ground on. Sorry normally I'm pretty agreeable but I honestly can't see your side of the argument here.

Sub and Dubs are much closer to an opinion question and for some people there is an actual reason they can't watch subs due to eye sight issues. I can't think of a single excuse to watch 2x speed. If you don't have time, its a tv show, just watch what you can and put it down when your busy lol. If you aren't interested in the show, I can't even fathom how 2x speed would make it better.

I honestly don't understand why people do this. If you're not enjoying it enough to at least watch it unchanged, then don't watch it. I get the idea of watching as much as you can, but it just seems like you're forcing yourself if you can't enjoy it as it was made.

I usually mute the show when I watch at 2x speed so I don't hear the weird sped up sound. I'll unmute and and go to 1x during particularly tense moments or interesting battles so I get the full experience. Characters just standing around talking? Back to 2x.

Pauses in dialogue are still there, theyre just shorter. When a character pauses for dramatic effect its pretty obvious no matter how fast it is. Again, during particularly impactful moments I always slow it down or go back and rewatch at 1x.

Also to clarify/correct myself the 2nd time I watched HxH I watched it all at 1x cause it was just that good :)

If you're watching garbage at 2x speed just to get through it faster, I've got some advice for you:

Stop watching garbage.

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

I watch a lot of seasonal anime and there are times where you can't watch every day the newest episodes. If it happens a few days in a row it could lead to having to catch up 30 episodes. 2x speed is a great way for me to close this gap because I can watch two episodes in the time of one episode. That way I don't have to force myself to find time to catch up.

Lmao I did this in Black Clover not because I’m bored but the pace is so slow at the start and I’m a fast reader so I can actually understand it even in 2x speed. I only watch it in normal pace if the animation will be amazing and actually interesting, if my best girl in black clover shows up or my favorite ost was played.

I do something similar due to my no-drop policy, but mostly, the highest I'll go is 1.5x. Any further and the audio starts getting weird, not because of the pitch, but because of the refresh rate. 2x is rare, but it has happened with a few dozen shows like Conception and Gibiate. Mostly, these shows are 4/10s or 3/10s that just got the short end of the stick in animation and story. The highest I ever went was 3x, which only happened once, and it was on the final episode of Medaka Box Abnormal. Dear god, do not watch that show.

The lowest I'll go, even for shows I consider masterpieces like Steins;Gate and Re:Zero, is 1.3x. Any less and the conversational scenes get way too slow. Speeding up a few shows has actually improved my experience on more than a few occasions, especially for anime like Soukou Musume Senki and Hortensia Saga that just need a little boost in their pacing; it doesn't make it worse most of the time. The only show I watched recently at 1x was Hetalia, because those flashing text walls are a bitch to pause on.

Also, to everyone who still thinks that pitch changes when you speed a video up: we got past that years ago. It doesn't happen anymore on YouTube, any other streaming site, or even VLC Media Player, which is what I use. No sensible, respectable video player doesn't lower the pitch proportional to the speed of the audio clip these days.
