that is true, KyoAni rarely flops when it comes to their art style. i still think the clannad eyes were way too big though.

Have you taken a look at the Clannad visual novel?

If anything they were an improvment to the source. Tru tho.

no, only VNs i've played are fate/stay night, grisaia, and angel beats. i should probably check it out though.

shaft is probably the most recognizable art style, those unusual camera angles are an instant sign that the anime is made by shaft. backgrounds usually are pretty simple which is another red flag.

Character designer Haruhiko Mikimito although he isn't tied to a particular studio.
I don't think I can tell most studios apart by how they draw. There are maybe, idk, 10 that seem to try to have consistent art direction across their productions.

I really like kyoani, the reason is simple because they invest a lot on their animators and hire them on contracts and have way better working conditions than any other studios not to mention how they also heavily invest in honing their skills and above all giving them ample amount of time to animate. On the contrary( with not so very good working conditions),I am also a big fan of WIT and their detailed eye shots are in my opinion second to none, something about WIT'S use of colour palettes makes the anime even more appealing and complete.

Gainax. Tho i think what some of you mean is not the studios style but rather the character designers (or the directors in the case of shaft) Or its just because the same people work on everything on like in the case of ghibli.

i'm assuming you mean old Gainax, because right now they aren't doing too well at all, just milking Eva with the rebuild movies.

madhouse used to be so good, but after a bunch of the best staff left they haven't been doing so good, mappa is where most of them went.

If artstyle is the one we're talking about here, then yes I agree. Kyoto Animation's artsyle is just a different breed. Beautifully well done, and just pleases the eyes of the watchers.

yeah, if only they could stay that consistent with their anime productions, because some of them are great while there are others that are painful to watch (not because of art but due to other factors).

that not gainax thats studio khara.
they aren't doin to well because all of the former gainax staff left gainax to form their own studios: imaishi formed trigger and anno khara. The only ones left are producers the produce generic shit under the name of gainax and its other offsprings like gaina.
The same also happened to madhouse and Maruyama.

In terms of the visual quality of the backgrounds, I'd say Kyoto Animation, with the caveat that Air/Clannad/Kanon can be a bit weird, like mentioned here:

I think it's that the eyes are too big and/or the mouth is placed too high up.

However, I've just gotta plug Gonzo's character face art.

i would say slightly different, MAPPA has a style that you can recognise after watching a bunch of their anime. it's hard to spot, but every studio is different in at least one way or another.

Kyoto Animation has gorgeous visuals, but it only fits with a certain vibe. imagine a battle shounen animated by them, it wouldn't fit, right?

my go to from there is MAPPA, which some people may argue with me about, but i'm going to ignore them lol. they have an expierence in a plethora of different genres and they all fit the energy it had going, even shows that didn't have as much of a budget as the big dogs.

and of course, CloverWorks is absolutely banging it this season with Wonder Egg Priority. i am in love.

Great question! I think all studios have their own unique styles, and good with their uniqueness. I appreciate them all, they all work hard. But, if you are asking from my perspective, Kyoto Animation, MAPPA, ufotable, Cloverworks are one point ahead for their stunning art styled animes like Violet Evergarden, JJK, Demon Slayer, Wonder Egg Priority etc.

Yuri on Ice, Dororo, AoT final season have different art styles which is noticeable. I am getting what you are trying to say I think that the original anime's may have any similarity like Space Dandy and Concrete Revolutio have similar art styles. Animation and its sequencing may be similar whether be it an adaptation or an original like every studio have their way of handling action scenes like Bones uses fast paced action, a little shaking to the camera angles with impact frames in their action sequences.

Dororo had another studio on it as well as MAPPA so that's probably why it looks so different. for AOT MAPPA had to take over from wit studio so they had to kind of adapt to their art style.

Mine fav is WIT Studio.

- Their Artstyle is extremely detailed

- Backgrounds have a lot of objects which make them lively and draws you more into the atmosphere of story and world. Their skies in backgrounds are probably unmatched in the whole industry.

- Their colouring and art is absolutely beautiful, golden hour shots are probably the best in the industry imo and are also my fav. Different time of the day and variation in weather is also really noticable.

- The blur effect is used really well and used only when required (which AoT final Season lacks)

- They really put effort in making their anime look next level beautiful. AOT, Vinland Saga, Kabaneri of the iron fortress & Great Pretender are some of the best looking anime out there, all done by WIT.
