| I rewatched this episode, and where the hell is the art and animation looking janky? The sunset blushing scene which Hayashi probably storyboarded looked really really good. Actually, any scene that involved Eren, Mikasa or Levi looked fabulous. Also, the backgrounds looked phenomenal, almost always ultra-realistic. The directing was also very good and the episode managed to capture the different moods and atmospheres of different scenes very proficiently. The right OSTs also played at the right times. Disregarding a few off-model shots of characters, I don't see the need for this much complaining. |

| Well, the animation was as expected from MAPPA, but enough has been said about it, no need to expand on it. (I'm going to go and apply some Myadzaki to my sore eyes right now). I think the only character who is really well drawn (most of the time) is Armin, he definitely looks good this season. The adapted material is some of my favourite parts of manga, especially the scene in the cart. The last reminder of the Survey Corps camaraderie. I also love the scene of Hange and Eren, when she asks: is you say tatakae, tatakae, does this mean there are two fights? She's trying to treat this situation in a light-hearted way, because she has no clue really what to do, but Eren sees through her feigned lightheartednes right away. I don't like him now, but at least he goes to the essence of the matter in this questions and his actions. Thanks to the person who uploaded the images from manga foreshadowing Mikasa's tattoo. I did not read the early chapters of manga and when Mikasa revealed this tattoo, I really thought that it was an asspull, but in reality not. Kudoz to Isayama, this man has foreseen a lot. I missed the shot of Azumabito drooling that was removed from this episode. It was really uncomfortable to see in manga during the presumably serious diplomatic talks but funny as hell. The next episode is going to be interesting. With Gabi, of course, but we'll be delving right into the core of the manga's moral message (as I understand it) from now on. ---- By the way, getting back to the scene where Yelena and her team meet Eren and team Paradis, why do you think Levi has prevented Yelena from working with Eren? I mean, even as a manga reader, I don't exactly understand why he needed to be so harsh so early on. I understand that, Levi being Levi, he's naturally suspicious about Yelena, but did he also distrust Eren at this point already? If you have some ideas that rely on further material from manga, please hide them under spoilers out of respect for anime onlies. |
| Do you think Hange's response about Eren's ecchines was genuine? She must have understood that it wasn't some teen angst and was trying to not escalate the situation and play it down? They didn't come back to it and her opinion on Eren so it's not really clear. Looking at the preview, Falco and that little shit escaping seems reaaaaaly convenient for plot. I hope it won't be that easy. |

Either way, this episode was uhmm fine i guess, when eren was talking to hange he mostly just came of as a little edgy, mostly because his "transformation" into an edgy dude is really sudden and we still dont know exacly why he became this way (although im sure we will get ANOTHER flashback for it later on). The talk between the main guys on the "train" was kinda cute tho, nothing special and honestly somewhat unnecessary, but it was a fine moment to relax i guess. And uh, did eren laugh when sasha died? I dont remember that being the case, because if he did, he sure has a great sense of humor as I also laughed on that part ahaha. The animation was extremely lacking, pretty much stills everywhere, but for an episode, with like ~12 animation directors, the art was still pretty good like usual, so no real complain on the visual department, at least for a more slice of life episode like this one. We got a 3 years time skip, are you not interested in what happen in these 3 years? Would it have been better if we didn't get these flashback and then you same one would complain about being lost by the plot? |

They arrange a meeting with Azumabito's (Kiyomi) from Hizuru, an eastern nation outside Paradis. Kiyomi visits paradis and holds talks, they find out Mikasa is descended from the Shogun of Hizuru who was friendly with the Eldian royals and was stuck in Paradis during the great titan war. Kiyomi is aiming for money and profit by exploiting the natural resources on Paradis after being informed by Zeke. She says that for Paradis and the Walldians to survive they need to fulfill some things. First, carry out a small rumbling as a test to show the other nations outside that they are capable of rumbling to use as a deterrent from being attacked. Basically if you attack us, we will set the rumbling on your nation. Second, Hizuru will gradually help in improving the Paradis military over time to reach parity with outside so that the rumbling wont be required anymore. Finally, in order to account for the time for the military improvement the threat of rumbling should be maintained. This necessitates that Paradis have two shifters, one having the founding titan which is with Eren currently, and one being a titan with royal blood (royal can't have founding titan because they will be influenced by Karl Fritz's vow of peace) who will pass on Zeke's beast titan during this time period (approx 50yrs). This means that Paradis will need to have succession rituals every 13 years. The royal blood part means that Historia is turned into a titan and eats Zeke becoming the new beast and then becomes a baby factory to produce as many children as possible in 13 years so that the royal blood can carry on. Eren is opposed to using Historia like this. Paradis try to establish relations with some other countries and ask Hizuru if they would be willing to introduce them to others but Hizuru says, fuck you we wont do that, we want all the money here alone. This makes the only possible choice in front of the scouts to titanise Historia. Eren is still opposed to this and rebels but suddenly decides to go ahead with Zeke's plan. The rest is the attack on liberio (marley) as we have seen from ep 5 to ep 8 Due to these actions and Eren keeping plans to himself and not confiding in the scouts, they have lost trust in him and are now considering to feed him to someone else in order to have a founding titan with the same ideals as them. Feel free to ask if you have any more questions What a champ, this clears up so much for me. I do have a few more questions though... So the founding titan can't have royal blood for the vow of peace reason, which means Historia can't just simply eat Eren and get the founding titan. How is the rumbling supposed to be initiated then, does the founding titan just have to touch someone with royal blood (like we saw in season 2) and then he gets control of all the titans? And I'm assuming that historia doesn't have to eat the beast titan SPECIFICALLY, zeke just happens to be what they have in stock and his time is up soon so might as well right? So this episode explains eren's intentions on attacking liberio; revenge sure, but mainly so that Historia wouldn't have to become a titan which would maintain their rumbling threat. He basically went over there just to weaken their military for a while, while Paradis gets up to speed with their technology? This is the one that really confuses me; does Historia HAVE TO become a titan in order for the rumbling to work? Can't eren just touchy touchy her as a human and then initiate the rumbling? Because then she doesn't have to make her family eat eachother every 13 years. Probably should be obvious but here goes anyway: Does Historia really have to have as many children as possible; like can she just have one and have that one eat her later? Or is it jus for insurance, like in case some die or can't have children? I may have missed it, but what is Historia's own position on the situation, does she intend to inherit the beast titan? Because she's obviously pregnant so, she probably wants to go ahead and eat zeke. Also, levi is currrently babysitting zeke until historia decides to eat him if I'm not mistaken, but this is in the present- when they had that meeting wasn't zeke in Liberio, so they didn't have him available to be eaten! Did they have titan serum at that time, so couldn't they have just injected Historia with that instead? I guess this goes back to the first question of does it have to be the beast titan specifically that Historia has to eat. Did the scouts also attack Liberio not only to retreive eren, but zeke as well for Historia to eat? I know zeke's plan has many layers and probably goes into spoiler territory, but if it's okay to ask, ultimately he WANTS to be eaten by Historia right? He WANTS the rumbling to happen, for whatever reason?? I'm fine with spoilers btw, I guess just hide it for the other people if you gotta go into spoilers If I'm confusing you that's fine, I'm confusing myself just thinking how to ask these questions. If it's too much (kind of is) then dw about it, you cleared up a lot of stuff already. Just continuing to ask because it seems you know your AOT, so I'd thought I'd take this opportunity |

For now I still don't get Eren's goal and his reason for turning his back to his comrades. I hope we'll learn it soon. I'm still waiting for the day I'll call him "cHaD" like almost every manga reader but that day hasn't come yet... |

I am pretty shocked myself, I would have never expected that coming from Armin. I would have accepted it coming from anyone else, but hearing it from Armin hurt. It shows how much of a tight situation they are in. But I hope they get the chance to talk all three, Mikasa, Armin and Eren and try to get as much information out as possible. I wish they could support him too. It will take me time to absorb everything that was delivered in this episode. But as you said, it took me off guard when Armin said that! |

| Historia x this random ex-bully got me a touch salty. *thinks about the most tragic love story aka Historia x Ymir* Hange was having too much fun teasing/bothering Eren, then he retaliated. Oof. She was scared. It's cool that Mikasa got to learn more about her mother's ancestry, too bad the Japanese only care about resources/trade. The blushing sunset scene was cute. Back when Eren still had a heart, now he's so harden that the 'most important' people of his life are questioning him. |

The animation was extremely lacking, pretty much stills everywhere, but for an episode, with like ~12 animation directors, the art was still pretty good like usual, so no real complain on the visual department, at least for a more slice of life episode like this one. there isnt that many flashbacks tho? and definitely not an overuse of them. season 4 started with marley's perspective, to humanize the previous "enemies", to make you understand them better. it adds moral ambiguity and weight of the story, and now you get what Paradis has been going through, and it just raises the overall complexity of the story as you (maybe) start to empathize with both sides of the war. Eren's lack of pov and audiences initially not rlly understanding his changes (and how he really hasn't changed at all) is purposeful, he's no longer the hero of the story, and we're not meant to really be on his side and agree with his actions. isn't stopping people tho. You slowly start to understand eren's character (not only with flashbacks). His lack of expressions and pov in current time is a sort of dehumanization with his character. Which fits with a lot of his development and the themes he embodies. The mangaka could've just showed everything, and then switched to Marley, and then switched back to Paradis, but by then, people would more easily side with eren and paradis. Marley's pov would feel like a rather tacky add on. Better to introduce marleyans first, then have you increasingly "like" them as the season continues, as marleyans and eldians seem to feel more and more familiar/similar |

I thought it was kind of absurd to be mad at Conny for being upset with Eren's reaction. Only viewers and Mikasa have seen Eren previously laugh to cope when Hannes died. exactly, out of the core group no one was closer to sasha than connie and seeing him come to terms with her death is a painful experience, his misunderstanding is valid and it hurts to see him react to his closest friend's death, every reaction feels raw and that is why it hits so hard. |

The blushing part was awkward as hell, and all the flashbacks and flash forwards were annoying, since I was piecing together where we were in the timeline based on if Sasha was there or not |
