Just curious, bittorrent is kind of slow, was wondering if it's easier to switch clients or can you only have 1 client running at any time?

I doubt it'll speed anything up though - you're still relying on just one connection. In fact, two clients would probably make for more overhead traffic, thus slower speeds.

Also, you may have to check and make sure the clients are operating on different ports

As said perviously, it shouldn't help your download speed but you can run two bittorrent programs at the same time depending on the cilents, though there should be little problem. If anything, it is highly doubtful the cilent if making things run slower, but it doesn't hurt to try.

If the client is the problem, it'd be better just to switch completely

You shouldn't ever run two clients at once. Use a "multi-torrent" client. I'd recommend uTorrent or Azureus. These programs allow you to run 2+ torrents simultaneously.

2 clients running at the same time kills the connection just as much as running 2 active torrents at the same time, the only thing you use more is memory and cpu.
Running 2 clients at the same time is plain stupid tho, you can just start multiple torrents...

My torrent download speeds are under 5k per torrent ... is this a client problem? I only seed 1 and DL 3 at any time. So, it's better to just switch clients then?

most of the time it's not a client problem. either it's the torrents or ur ports aren't open

What's the easiest way to open a port for the normal bittorrent client? No need for long answer a link will do, I can follow instructions if they're not too hard (^.^)

use this site: http://www.portforward.com/ to get tutorials on how to open up your ports on your router.

Well i use bit torrent... the up to date version.

The older bit torrents you can only do one at a time and that was a pain in the ASS (try downloading the first 100 episodes of bleach 1 at a time). But the more recent versions of bit torrent lets me download a crapload at once. I avg about 20 torrents on at any time. and its great!

Bottom line just update your bittorrent.

as said before, its not the client, but your network has a problem, you're behind a NAT and ports that your client use are not forwarded. also if you use a the "default" bittorrent client, i suggest that you swap to µTorrent, best bittorrent-client for windows machines. Although it has its own problems, for a normal user they are pretty nill.

That calls for an upgrade in the connection department . Really, nothing else can fix that, unless the torrent you are dl-ing doesn't have enough seeds ...

Er, what's a NAT and how do I fix that? Also is there an easy way for me to share my torrents or is that automatically happening? Do we have a section with a bittorrent tutorial somewhere on the forums?

nope we don't have a tutorial about bittorrent, but when i get some time i think ill make on about µTorrent, I don't have other clients installed and don't feel like installing them just to take some damn screenshots about it... so someone else can do other clients...

Xinil could make a board for all the guides and how-to's we're gonna come up with...

Well, we have 4 desktops all networked on a cable connection, so right now I'm downloading on 2 PCs with 2 different clients (Azureus is faster than Bittorrent), and watching using another PC #3. But I'm not a geek girl, I swear!! I just never threw out the old PCs.

I honestly don't know how to do much more than just share the files over the network (someone else from work showed me how to do that) but that's about all I know how to do. I don't know how to unlock ports or complicated stuff like that, if there's a "how to guide for dummies", I'm really good at following instructions
<(^.^)>. I'm sure I could make 1 PC just seed torrents if I only knew how to do that ... any advice appreciated.

thats easy, download a file to that PC with torrent, and leave the torrent running (so don't take if off the list from Azureus or dont close the window or anything) and you're seeding that torrent.

as long as you keep the torrent UP AND RUNNING, you are sending data to other users who don't have that data that you have. and when you have 100% of the file, you can't really download anything anymore because you have it all... then you just keep sending stuff to other users, and are counted as seeder, not leecher ^^

thats the way to seed torrents, but to get good speeds for download and upload, its best when you're directly connected to internet and you're not behind a NAT. or if you're behind a NAT, then have the right port forwarded to the computer you're using to seed torrents :)

hope that helps you a bit to understand it, i really can't help you with port forwarding because it all depends on the ADSL modem / possible hardwares you have OR your ISP... so thats one thing you need to figure out yourself unless you can give more information about your ADSL modem and if you're having other firewalls that you are behind :)
