Baby I Love You Daze (music video by Studio Bones) currently has 19 million views on YouTube. If you assume each user's watched the 4 minute video 10 times, it would still be roughly the same amount of people who have watched Death Note on MAL (1,890,340 users as of today). However, only 3,534 users have Baby I Love You Daze set as completed on MAL.

How many people do you think have watched Death Note worldwide since it aired in 2006? Is it the actual most watched anime of all time?

In my mind it's still probably behind the big big shows that used to run on TV like Dragon Ball Z, Naruto and Pokemon, even if you only count people that have watched the anime in its entirety. What's your opinion?

Something to consider is a lot of people who watched it might not have entered it into MAL just because they don't see an animated music video as being noteworthy/an anime to include on their list.

I'd be very surprised if Death Note has been watched by more than 100 million people worldwide tbh. I think it does have more notoriety in the anime community than anywhere else.

All the anime fans I know irl have watched it although only three of them actually have a mal account so the actual number of people who have watched death note is definitely much higher than the number of mal members. As to how high is this number, idk if it's possible possible to find out even with serious digging due to the different methods of distribution both official and not.

I wanted to mention the music video because seeing its view count is what made me think about this topic. But you're right, I imagine a lot of people that have a MAL account end up not adding shorts and music videos like this one.

I was thinking maybe 1 person in a randomly selected 100 people group has seen Death Note. So with 8 billion people, that would mean some 80 million, right? That would be my bet I think.

There's no real way to know about this, unfortunately. Most people who watch anime around the world don't have MAL accounts. Only the more hardcore anime watchers(by casual standards) usually create MAL accounts. Those people who only watch anime from time to time, if it's recommended by friends or if they come across it on some streaming site like Netflix, don't go looking for anime online and hence don't really have accounts on MAL or any sort of anime listing/forum site.

Also, there are so many people who just use MAL to check anime without creating an account. I remember I used to do this for a period of time years back.

So there are too many variables.

But it's certainly one of the most watched anime (not most heard about. I guess that would be something like Pokemon. In terms of people knowing the name of one), if not the most watched anime outright. Death Note is one of the first recommendations new anime watchers get whenever they've started getting into the medium.

I don't know how many people individually watched the show, but if I had to take a guess it will be 70 - 105 million lol.

Death note is popular and I would think most who watch anime would have seen it

140 million is insane, that’s almost 2% if the population. I’d say less than 35 million.

I also think 140 million is a bit too much. That would mean that just 1,4% of people who have watched Death Note have a MAL account. It could still be possible I think, don't know if many people in Japan, or India, or Brazil use the site.

You mean illegally? Hard to tell. I only read the manga even before there were news about the TV adaptation and never bothered since.

I think Death note is absolutely one of the more popular anime, especially among those who watch anime, sure the amount of people who have watcher DB or Pokemon might actually be higher, but not all of those people have MAL, most might not even know what anime is and said shows are just something from childhood.
I have watched Death note, actually it was my first anime I finished (while knowing it was an anime, so childhood shows don't count), but I rarely mark music videos here on MAL, so I don't have Baby I Love You Daze marked as watched.

1.5 million users on MAL, so probably around 30 million people. (Less than 35 million)

I think it's around 60/70 million. Death Note is definitely not the most watched anime of all time, but it's really fucking popular.

I bet a whole bunch of people from different countries have watched death note. I've lived in india and Australia. Every second person I've met in india had watched death note . It was quite popular. Many in Australia too.
