Toradora is the real deal, but picking a romance anime is a personal preference whether you love the MCs or the story itself

I really liked Tsuki ga kirei (I read the main criticisms against it and I can definitely see where they're coming from), as well as wotaku ni koi wa muzukashii. I have a special place for karakai jouzu no Takagi-san but I wouldn't classify it strictly "romance" as I would the other two.

I used to enjoy Toradora but less so after a few years. Kokoro connect would be really really good if it weren't for the "Iori being a basic schyzophrenic bitch throwing pointless hissy fits" episodes which threw a massive wrench in the series' wheel.
"The problem with defining even an aspect of your personality by something that you like, is that criticism of that product appears to you to be criticism of you personally. I find it to be a very harmful attitude, [...] you can't rationally discuss a product because you've started to define yourself by its very existence."

I loved Kimi ni Todoke, cute and really sweet, both Kazehaya and Sawako had mutual feelings from the beginning which is a huge plus for me.

I still don't get why many consider Toradora to be a good romance anime, Taiga is an abusive bitch who treats Ryuuji like her servant.

I love Monthly Girls Nozaki-kun. The comedy, romance and characters are likeable. Though I like its manga better, hope it will have season 2 someday.

My favorite romance of all time is a manga, sadly. Wish it would be made into an anime but it is highly unlikely. It only has a live action movie adaptation.

For anime, I have nothing that satisfied me.

Yeah Clannad definitely made me sad but I didn't cry. Also I love Sakurasou it is one of my favorite anime of all time but I don't look at it as a romance anime. I see it more as a slice of life drama with romantic elements. So I can't call it mr favorite romance anime.

I really depends on what you consider "good" romance, and what you mean by romance. I've found there's centrally 3 kinds of romance anime. Japanese adolescent romantic development anime, action/fantasy anime romance (romance isn't the central theme but is very prevalent), and early adult romance.

Most anime romance is based off the Japanese conception of adolescent romance (comes out more like puppy love) and so the development of romance is the central, and often the whole anime is just the building of the relationship and by the end the MC's are (somewhat) together. This isn't my favorite kind because the romantic development is extremely slow, and, in my eyes, there isn't a lot of "payoff" (seeing the characters actually interact romantically). Also because of the Japanese conception of closeness, there are many cultural artifacts which are endearing and a "big step" in Japanese culture which are totally insignificant in western culture (like saying the person you likes first name and not their family name). And watching a show just for 4-6 episodes in and the first piece of romantic development is someone calling another person by their first name is pretty infuriating.

Action/fantasy anime romance is pretty much what you'd expect (SAO kind of development spread in-between more pressing conflicts). There are many anime where the romance is more central and no so much in the backseat, and I've already seen some here.

Early adult romance anime are where the development isn't as drawn out as adolescent romantic development, and more resembles what a mature relationship would look like in terms of actual exposure to romance. My favourite kind undoubtedly.

Sorry I didn't give any examples, I really shouldn't be writing this right now but I needed a quick work break.

My favorite romance anime is different from my favorite romance in anime. Like, Steins;Gate or the Monogatari Series are "romance" (Steins;Gate only barely). I fwe're talking anime that have a super duper heavy focus on romance, I'd say

- Kaguya-sama
- Bunny Girl Senpai
- Your Name
- Clannad + Afterstory
- Sakuraou no Pet Girl na Kanojo

This top 5 is under the assumption that Kyoukai no Kanata, Steins;Gate, Monogatari Series, Fate Series, and Welcome to the NHK don't count

Kimagure Orage Road, yeas I know, all characters are scumbags and liars (don't get me started on the stuff that Ayukawa did to her best friend Hikaru, and for what? for a guy), but it has that incredible charm and atmosphere that no romance anime could match. Even now in 2020 and I can't name a better romance that Kimagure

SAO ofc, it's SAO.

When it comes to Romance I would say it exist different kind of them.

You have the comedy type.
You have the serious type.
You have the harem type.
You have the story type.

When it comes to Comedy a good one is Nodame, especially the first time you watch it.
When it comes to the serious type I would go with like Nana, Fruits Basket and White Album 2.
When it comes to the harem type Monongatari, Grisaia, Shield Hero, Slime, Clannad.
When it comes to the story type, ROV, Bakuman, Kara no Kyoukai and the Fate serie.

Well romance is a amazin genre and it was something I only watched for 2 years more or less all the time.

I love romance and I'm so happy about how Fruit Basket turned out to, well done TMS.
It exist a lot of good once, I really wish people could start to watch more romance.

Yeah I've found this is the best way to break down romance anime, most people will drift more towards one of the categories. And no problem, I'm glad I could help!

Obligatory Kare Kano mention. Very likeable leads, fast development that actually goes somewhere (and not only at the end) and a great sense of direction. If it's not more popular or highly rated is only because it's too good for its own good for 3/4 of its run, which makes its inconclusive end leave people wanting more (and also because it's from 1998, which is not even that old but yeah).

In terms of Romance anime, my favourite would prbly be Tonari no Kaibutsu-kun. I'm not such a seasoned Romance watcher as most here though.

White Album 2 is overly melodramatic romantic pain, and I enjoyed every second of that shit. Haven't finished Oregairu S3, but I'm assuming that it'll be halfway decent. Otherwise, you've got the obligatory Spice and Wolf, as well as Yojouhan Shinwa Taikei if that counts.
