THIS IS AN ANIME ONLY DISCUSSION POST. DO NOT DISCUSS THE MANGA BEYOND THIS EPISODE.
----------------------------------------
As suspected from previous episode, Gatlantis already has technology to nullify the wave motion cannon completely, not mention a "mini" Dyson sphere megastructure (only the size of Jupiter) Also, as predicted, the betrayal came. It seems that Gatlantis and Theresa are betting against each other in a cosmic-scale game.

Weaker start but now at least it is beginning to pick up.
bla bla bla
The endless debate between fans and haters. At one point, after spending a lot of time on MAL, you just realize it's totally pointless.

There is a problem with this betrayal though.
IT IS DUMB AS FUCK.

This dude, he must be dead from the brain or something, so he does what Sabera-brown wants and gets the cure for his son, lets suppose now.
So he accomplished it, and he gets the cure, but now what?! He set yamato and his own death, so how can he even get the cure for his son?!
By some miracle, he is able to get it back to him, but now they are doomed, his actions doomed humanity to die by Gatlantis's hands, so it didnt matter.

The only logic choice here, was find another way, he has to survived and they have to defeat Gatlantis, for even asure his son survival.
Dumb plot device, doesnt make any sense, they wanted to include some kind of betrayal this bad that they had to downgrade an human's stupidity to reach this high.
What a joke, IMO this completly takes any emotional impact or connection I could have had with this dude, his only want to guarantee his son survival is defeating Gatlantis, afterwords he could find a solution to his disease, AFTER, if you cure him from his disease but have as consequences the extinction of every single life form, you have not achieved anything at all, you just doomed any changes of helping your son survive and grow up.
Dumb, DUMB.

I presume he's banking on their cosmic level of power to spare their life somehow but that's stretching very far.

Overall, this season just didn't fix a lot of the stuff that just didn't age well, unlike the first season. A lot of the stuff in this second season just doesn't make any logical sense.

Never seen the originals, so I dunno of the possible changes that were, or werent bad to the plot and cast.

His motivation did not make any sense, I dont think that applies for most of the plot, it is just that alot of the plot was not really explained in the best way possible, some stuff feel rather too complex, others too simple.

Overall this remake is like an adult upgrade of what Star Blazers was. Im intrigued by the Gatlantis Empire being bioengineered to exterminate all humanoid life as a defensive system for the universe. Their quest for Teresa/Trelaina is almost like a Galactic format.

I agree the Episode 18 betrayal lacked common sense, but then many things we do lack common sense.

When will the next batch of episodes be coming out either subtitled or dubbed? Based on information ive read online, the second part of 2202 started a couple weeks ago and #19 should be airing this weekend with 20-22 following until the final batch is released in theatres in Japan?

God damn it that ending, parental love sure can make you do quite the selfless things, but man how they showcase this, the massive size of it together with all the emotions and feelings of the characters! Really impressed, looking really forwards to see what the next episode will offer!

Very stupid betrayal. Not sure what the guy above me is talking about, but the way they showcased this betrayal makes no sense and is stupid. He doomed humanity, he knows this. He is in all of the meetings, so he knows that they want to destroy humanity. How does this save his son in the end? LMAO, 2202 is such a downgrade from 2199..

That Dyson sphere and ship was absolutely awe inspiring. That power. However the reaction of the emperor is absolutely illogical considering his character. He shouldn't be laughing, should he? He should be cold, utterly devoid of emotion...otherwise all his rants about love//smiling make no sense

The betrayal felt a bit silly to be honest, but I hope they fix it. And by god, those cells need to have video monitoring. Everyone waltzes in there like its their office.

point with emperor laughing/rant on love is that they are broken delusional race, they were made to act as space cops/divine intervention, and remove only humanity that has fallen from it's path of progress, idk what in their history made them kill their masters and go on galactic wipe out

The first few seconds in the time fault area briefly show what looks like a clone of Yamato? That's weird. Idk what is the matter with Niimi and others, that purple girl and the other one talking about Gatlanteans look suspicious.
The space battle was pretty nice, such a grand encounter is so different from Yamato fighting alone. Although I should say that the internal structure of the White Comet is so absurd that I wonder if that makes any sense. What's with that Dyson sphere and gravitational shenanigans? Looked massive, strange, unexplained and epicly dangerous at the same time.

However, the episode turned out to be one of the worst due to the betrayal. I think it's on the same level of stupidity as the deus ex machina that saved Yuki from death some episodes ago. Literally nothing in Kato's betrayal makes any sense whatsoever. If the writers wanted to show how humans can do silly things in the name of love, THAT'S NOT HOW TO SHOW IT. Betrayals can be so emotional yet this one was so devoid of any impact that I felt literally nothing except embarrassment for the lack of logic. So, Kato somehow gets the medicine that magically can help his exact situation (welp I wonder why did Sabera had it at all, not even mentioning that she was in the confinement cell and should've been checked). Alright, HE GOT IT, his goal achieved, yet he proceeds to throw his achievement in the trash bin by destroying all hope humanity had because what? What reason did he have for fulfilling the promise he supposedly made to Sabera? Did he understand that you don't cure your child by dying alongside with the medicine and the rest of humanity? Seems like he didn't. A good badass character with a little emotional side for his wife and child was absolutely butchered by this atrocious writing. Also, we see him disabling the engine by using the same thing Keyman used in his betrayal. Makes zero sense, since that thing should've been kept closely by the captain or XO at least (assuming it didn't stay with Keyman, which would've been very stupid, but even if it did, Kato never took it from Keyman, so it's stupid anyway). So okay Kato got that remote for disabling the engine without any explanation and despite having no opportunity to do so. Then proceeded to acting absolutely illogically. I'm baffled. Now I know, the only reason I can think of to make excuse for this silliness is claiming that Kato's mind was controlled by that mind control Gatlantis thingy. Still, doesn't explain a large part of my complaints, and doesn't make sense since he acted like a conflicted person, not a puppet. I officially declare this episode the most retarded episode of Yamato I've ever seen. I'm so taken aback that I even took my time to write this huge rant.
Oh, and by the way, Kato's facial expressions were absolutely awfully drawn. They really contributed to me not feeling anything alongside with the total absence of logic. They were just so exagerrated and distorted.

I love the 1st season; it had some problems but I still loved it.
I hate the 2nd season; it had some moments but I still hate it.

The retcons and rewriting amounted to most of the inconsistencies. This is the part you just turn off your brain and just appreciate the awesome visuals and action sequences and don't even try to make sense of it because it will just frustrate you.
