During the wedding there were a few episodes that felt so full of substance and meaningful moments that I felt I could go back to watching an episode at a time and be content. We have started to fall out of that again to no surprise, these last episodes have felt a little lacking, or empty, and I thought this one would be the same way. However slowly I became pretty enticed with what this episode represented.
Firstly, I've mentioned numerous times but the thing I was most excited for entering Whole Cake was having a smaller group of Straw Hats again. I was excited to have an arc that featured all of them equally in a way that something like Alabasta did! We have been getting this with Luffy, Sanji and Brook especially, but people like Chopper got their time in the light as well, as did the supporting cast and new crew member Jimbei. At this moment, Nami is irreplaceable to the escape mission. After taking Kingbaum hostage once more, she encouraged/manipulated him, utilized her abilities to avoid Big Mom and steal Zeus away from her, and even had a connection with the big tree after understanding his desires; humanizing him and feeling hurt and maybe guilty when he was eviscerated.
Seeing the many sides and strengths to Nami in her leadership and the death of Kingbaum was the first sign this episode was going to have some notable moments, even if while leading up to it and cutting to the Germa gang fighting some unimportant goons it felt like we were going to get a slow plot progression episode without much I personally cared for. The second sign that this episode felt whole rather than lacking for me was when we saw the perspective of the Big Mom family! By seeing the tanks chasing Bege, the ships waiting to stop the Sunny, Katakuri and many goons preoccupying the Sunny, and an army ready to attack from anywhere due to the mirror dimension, it was effective and made me incredibly eager to see how the hell they will deal with all of this. Even if they get away from Mom, they are in between a rock and a hard place and the outcome isn’t obvious… To be clear, it set the stage in a meaningful way to come.
Lastly, the third meaningful moment this episode brought forward according to what I value was Pudding’s interaction with the Fire Tank pirates. What I find interesting about her role in all of this is that I believe both sides she has presented to the audience. I think she is conflicted and angry at Sanji, but also utterly appreciative of him. Perhaps she isn't even clear which side of herself will take priority. I had initially thought her character arc was laid out before us as taking agency for herself rather than living compliantly within the safety of Mom’s good graces; this showed through her admiration of Lola and what I thought was a parallel to Reiju. Then by seeing her backstory, it also feels as though her character arc will be deepened further by not only rejecting the safety of complacency, but also the safety of wearing the mask of a monster and acknowledging the pain that she didn't deserve. I do feel that this is going to be the endpoint of her character, but I'm not sure when we are going to get there, and I could be wrong. However I do theorize that she will play one of the final and most instrumental roles in this escape, because she holds half of the power over the safety of Whole Cake island, further, Chiffon, an enemy of Big Mom, holds the other half! This gives the two of them all the power in the world to force the Big Mom pirates to do as they say, “Let everyone escape and will give you the cake”.
P.S. did I forget where Brook was or is he about to play another shockingly important role as he has disappeared?? |
