Do you think it's better to know what a series is like before you watch it?

For those of you that have watched sad series or shows that have made you cry, did you know about it beforehand? I don't mean if you were spoiled for the exact events, but like, did you know it was sad and/or emotional before you started it?

And do you think that ruins an anime or makes it better? Specifically, do you think that knowing an anime is really sad or that has made a lot of people cry ruins the impact of it for you? Or does it not matter as long as you don't know the specific events that take place?

i find if a show is good it'll be engaging enough to make you not be thinking about what is going to happen or how it'll make you feel

for example if someone tells you "yeah this anime is super sad itll make you cry" i find i wont actually think about that and it wont affect the experience much while i am watching it if the show is good and can draw me in. then if you do end up crying or having an emotional response or whatever you're just naturally reacting to the show not thinking about the reputation it has

so in other words if it feels like knowing too much about it ruined it maybe it just wasnt captivating enough in the first place, thats my take anyways

I find that the best way to go into a show is going in blind. I don't want an outline of future events.
I could agree with you, but then we'd both be wrong.

The best way to watch anything is to know nothing about it other than maybe the plot description. Eliminating expectations, also reduces the chances of disappointment.

Anyhow, I don't like depression, so depressing things are usually not rated favorably by me. Exceptions exist, but they're rare. Since I usually avoid things that have a reputation for being soul crushing, if I have watched it then I probably didn't know ahead of time.

I don't read reviews, I don't watch trailers, I don't read synopsis.

I don't know normaly what the anime will bring, but a show like you lie in april, you don't need to be a rocket scientist to understand that she woud

It's more fun to watch a anime without knowing anything about the show.

Read a few reviews and that was only after I finished the show.

So when I watched White Album 2 or Meiji Kenkaku Romantan - Tsuioku-hen etc they really did fk me up badly.

Henshin is a good manga alterntive too, that's something that's crazy.

Granted that this will vary from person to person. Some mire information won't hurt my enjoyment if I decide to watch it after that.
Best example from my own experience I can give is Usagi Drop:

This made me watch the complete first episode, complete with with even more tears rolling down my cheeks and after that I watched the rest of this show and enjoyed it like crazy.

So it most definitely isn't always bad to know some of the plot/know what the show is about. It might even help you get into a story that you otherwise would have missed.

Just knowing a show is the type that makes you exhibit emotions is typically not enough to ruin anything at all for me, and it might even convince me to watch it earlier than I intended, which happened with Clannad. I'm not a contrarian anymore, I'm not gonna specifically go in contrary to what people feel, I won't watch a sad show just to prove it's not sad, I'll take people at their word and then see if I agree.

If they give more specifics then yes, that can ruin the show. Spoilers suck when there's supposed to be emotional impact.

Most of the 'sad' anime, like Anohana, Clannad, Angel Beats, etc. I went into knowing they'd be sad. They still made me sad despite knowing they'd be sad + spoilers.
I know a lot spoilers and typically know about most shows I go into, but when you go in blind, it's way better.
Can't think of a specific tear-jerker right now, but I remember going into Zegapain blind. It was amazing, and I recommend going into it blind. Anime like Gakkou Gurashi/etc are also better going in blind

Knowing that it's sad does ruin the impact a lot though.

When I go into a sad anime, I usually know before hand that it is sad from everyone praising it. I don't mind dramas it just depends on how well it is executed. Just because an anime made me cry like a li'l bitch doesn't mean I hate it, in fact I probably liked it even more because of its fantastic story.

Not really, knowing a little bit about the show, helps me to decide if the anime suits my taste or not. That's why a lot of people like to read a spoiler-free review of an anime before they're going to decide if they will watch it.

Well, I’ve experienced both ways.

I knew beforehand that shows such as Shigatsu Kimi no Uso, Koe no Katachi, Clannad: After Story, Anohana, Maquia: When the Promised Flower Blooms, Kimi no Suizou wa Tabetai and Plastic Memories would be melodramatic/tear-jerkers but this didn’t make it any less entertaining. It’s like it weighs on your mind throughout, especially in the middle regarding how it’ll play out and all, but that’s just another kind of fun experience I suppose.

And then there are shows which I didn’t know would end in a bittersweet manner. One notable example for me which totally crippled me was noneother than
. I just didn't imagine it’d end this way.
, I suppose to some extent, is another although I was disappointed in this case.

Sad animes don't make me cry because they feel like they are trying too hard to make you cry just by a character's death, the only animes that made me cry is Attack on Titan(the first episode teared me up, and this is the first to make me cry) and Violet Evergarden
