Hello,

I would like to start introducing anime to my little one. Any suggestions for anime suited for children 1-5 years of age? Length of the episodes, language availability and targeted audience gender don't matter. I shudder at the thought of shows such as Telletubies since I think it's rather dull, the characters are also uninteresting and lack well... character... would be nice if I as an adult could watch it together with my child and still enjoy it (the shows don't need to have jokes or hidden meanings made specifically for adults to understand or such).

Thanks in advance :)

I feel like Teletubbies actually makes children dumber. I watched it growing up, and I would find myself mimicking their unintelligent sounds and jibberish words. So, I don't recommend that.
Well, there's always the classics of Pokemon, Digimon, Dragon Ball, and Yu-Gi-Oh! There's also Bakugan, Dinosaur King, Sonic X, Chi's Sweet Home, Bananya, Hataraku Onii-san, Wooser no Sono Higurashi, Nyampire the Animation, Ketsuekigata-kun!, Pan de Peace!, Santa Company, Sushi Ninja (wasn't very good, but kids don't care), and maybe Hetalia (it's a little offensive to some people)?
OH! And Studio Ghibli films are always a safe bet.

Anyway, there's a bunch for you to check out. I, at least, relatively enjoyed most of the ones I mentioned, and a majority of them are aimed at younger children.

amaama to inazuma? don't think it's targeted towards children, but the mc's a little girl and in general it's quite a light watch.

pingu in the city might be of interest too, and, as the previous comment mentioned, studio ghibli's a good option.

In the case of most of these (minus Sazae-san), Discotek has actually put out cheap, affordable, and in print physical media for these. Either DVD, BD, or SDBD.

And ugh, imitating Teletubbies might be bad, but imitating the selfish little brat from Caillou would be worse! Little Nemo also exists, but I wouldn't want to torture you, as an adult, with that...

Not all of their films are appropriate for children though.

I'd start with Chi's Sweet Home, but you'll need to read the subtitles for kids that young. It's on disc so you can play it again and again.

There's a 3D remake on Amazon Prime. I haven't watched it myself because the 2D original is so good.

Personally think that's a bit too young to start watching anime, and some anime recommended here are definitely not suitable for kids, like Hetalia and Hunter X Hunter.

Besides that, i think even Pokemon and Digimon would be best enjoyed by atleast a 8 year old instead because of emotional/scary scenes(especially in Digimon) that might not be suitable for such a young child.

These should be suitable, though i'm not sure how easily available they are:

Ai no Wakakusa Monogatari(Tales of Little Women) + the sequel Wakakusa Monogatari: Nan to Jo-sensei(Little Women II: Jo's Boys, Little Men)

Alps Monogatari: Watashi no Annette(Alps Stories: My Annette)

Anime 80-nichikan Sekai Isshuu(Around the World with Willy Fog, Around the World in Eighty Days.)

Bananya

Chiisana Obake Acchi, Kocchi, Socchi(Three Little Ghosts)

Kyoro-chan

Neko no Ongaeshi(The Cat Returns)

Ningyohime Marina no Bouken(Saban's Adventures of the Little Mermaid, Mermaid Princess: Marina's Adventure)

Ohayou! Spank(Hello Spank!)

Ojamajo Doremi(Useless Witchgirl Doremi)

Peter Pan no Bouken(Peter Pan & Wendy, Adventures of Peter Pan)

Shin Calimero(Calimero (1992))

Shokupan Mimi

Spoon Oba-san(Old-Lady Spoon, Mrs. Pepperpot)

Tottoko Hamtarou(Hamtaro)

Yume no Hoshi no Button Nose(Dream Star Button Nose, Button Nose)

Any Ghibi film or Pokemon. This is not anime, but Super Sentai (basically Power ranger stock footage from Japan). My Neighbor Totoro is a good place to start! As for Super Sentai:http://powerrangers.wikia.com/wiki/Super_Sentai
