I very much like the webgen/sakuga type animation with their stylized lines and dynamic camera movement, even if it sometimes comes with a drop in quality. Recently, you can see more and more examples of it, in very much mainstream and accepted shows, and it definitely is a movement inside the industry. It got to the point when I have become interested in actually looking up names and people to follow. However, using web searches you can only find a large amount of unstructured information (as always), mostly consisting of fanbloggers blogging about stuff they are fan of. Even if they are trying to form a narrative, they are limited to their own watched shows without real research effort going into it.

Main question:
Optimally, what I would like to have is an introduction, maybe a historic recount of people and notable examples that can point me in the right directions.

Sub-question:
Since this is a relatively new niche in an already niche subculture (anime), the thing I'm looking for most likely does not exist yet, so let's make this subjective: what was your introduction to webgen/sakuga, and what yould you consider a good introductionary write-up of it, if any? :)

I don't really know what you're asking honestly, but i assume you're looking for something along the lines of this?

You should. He believes in you.

Is that characteristic for webgen? I am not sure about it.
Just look at MLP:FIM or some minimalistic anime like Kaijuu Girls: for me this is more webgen-esque.

This series of videos is the best introduction to sakuga and the history of anime’s animation that I’m aware of. It comes from a presentation at Anime Central 2013 in Chicago. It doesn’t delve into webgen specifically a lot from what I recall, but it’ll get you grounded in most of the animation schools of thought in Japan.

It’s a very informative series and well worth watching for anyone who considers themselves a fan of the medium.

As for the webgen movement specifically, it’s a more recent one afaik and there isn’t a lot of centralized information I’m aware of, so I don’t know how much I can help there aside from giving you info from something I’ve personally watched, like with the blogs you mentioned: My favorite animator happens to be a webgen animator who went mainstream, Shingo Fujii. He did the bulk of the action scenes in Go! Princess Precure so franchise mainstay Nishiki Itaoka could take a backseat and gain experience in the character acting arena. Go! Princess Precure has the most technically impressive action sequences in the franchise by far by combining interesting cinematography with the sakuga. There’s extensive usage of dynamic camera in particular, which I broke down for another user at one point in this post.

And here’s Shingo Fujii’s sakugabooru page.

I hope that helped a bit.

This is the start of the same series I linked above, for the record. I just linked the playlist rather than the first video.

It really is the best primer I’ve seen around. Fun to watch too.

Well, that's how I would describe those pieces of animation I know of, but that's only my perception at this point. Hence this topic. :)
What characteristics would you use?

Thanks! The videos look nice, and that second article looks like a hefty read, which is just what I like. I did not have the time to check them out properly yet (...weekdays, you know how that goes, bloeh >_< ), but I definitely will!

I lack the terminology but "constant change of perspective" doesn't sound web specific. It isn't something new or revolutionary also there should be many other tricks and techniques.

Whoa, these articles are awesome. Especially the second one!

Thanks a bunch for sharing. I definitely learned some stuff.

@xchyssa No no, it’s not an issue. I was pointing out that we linked the same series to underscore that it really is a good one. I’m glad to see someone else sharing it.

I just realized they blocked that first video about Yutaka Nakamura in my country since I last went through that playlist :(

Thanks, those were pretty great, especially the second one was very interesting and informative.
I probably regret this post by now.

Same here, unfortunately. You could probably get around it with one of the online youtube downloaders though. I’ve had them all downloaded for ages in case they ever perma-vanish somehow. They’re just too good to risk losing.

my hard drives are more short lived than youtube videos usually. I used to save a lot of stuff, but I always eventually lost it so now I don't bother anymore xD.

But it's good to know you have them in case they ever do get taken down.
I probably regret this post by now.
