Boracay, one of the most popular islands for tourists in the Philippines, is to close for six months on 26 April.

The decision was announced by President Rodrigo Duterte on 4 April, after he dubbed the island a “cesspool” during a visit the previous month.

The island is lauded for its white sand beaches, but problems of sewage being dumped into the sea by local hotels and restaurants, and buildings constructed too close to the shoreline, mean it is under threat.

Hopefully, a cleanup effort is mounted right away, a popular tourist destination being closed for half a year during tourism season is bad for the economy.

The closing of Boracay only affects the economy on the Visayas region because most of the locals and people from surrounding islands work there.

There are other better tourist spots on the country than Boracay so its not a big problem.

Living in the Philippines for so long, I never even visited Boracay nor thought about it. Need to see that white sands someday. Maybe if I don't act like a shut-in, I can probably step one foot away from my daily route.

Boracay seems to have been an Insider Tip. It must have been very beautiful to travel there when there hadn't been that many Hotels there. But Greed seems to have had completely destroyed the Environment there. So much, that I highly doubt that they can clean it all up in just 6 Months, not even if they get international Help with Money and Expertise.

ye this is a repeated news here in the philippines

i say capitalism at its finest making pollution there widespread because of too much greed from businessmen

and also the economic impact of the closure is just minimal as far as government is concerned

6-month Boracay closure to cost economy P1.96 billion
http://business.inquirer.net/249752/pernia-6-month-boracay-closure-cost-economy-p1-96-billion

2 billion pesos is nothing compared to other tax revenues of the government

We've known about Boracay's deteriorating state and its terrible management here in the Philippines for years now. I'm just sad that they let it get this bad, never even had a chance to visit and see its beauty for myself.

This is somewhat old news.

https://mashable.com/2018/04/05/boracay-philippines-garbage-closure.amp

The entire island of Boracay will be closed to visitors from Apr. 26, so that it can receive a massive clean-up of dumped sewage and upgrades to its drainage systems, a spokesperson for President Rodrigo Duterte confirmed Thursday. It will be shut for a maximum of six months.

Boracay has been shit for a decade, literal shit.
