Because you pick and choose what you remember, regardless of what actually happens.

Look for an actual list of top selling anime/manga. Oh right, action shounens are still dominating. What's yaoi bait and moe?

Are you talking about the community or about sales? Because sales data largely comes from Japan and the anime communities we participate in are mostly western so they're not the same thing.
I probably regret this post by now.

Are you implying that sweaty buff shirtless men beating each other isn't clearly gay bait?

No, lol the last time they ever were in a weekly ranking was 2013 when a new sequel was announced and that was only for ONE week.

No it's called being cool.

Don't compare HNI with YOI

I actually didn't compare them, you did in your first post. I just said it could totally be gay bait.

Edit: If you want to compared the level of gay bait I guess different strokes for different folks but that's none of my business with those two specific examples.

Most anime watchers are males and they need cute grills.

They were always the backbone of anime industry, don't let me tell you the stories of old.

OT: Because what is now in west is unfortunately spreading into land of ramen as well.

As a franchise, it has mainstream recognition but it peaked out even before anime adaptation.

If you assume Hajime no Ippo tankoubon sales are about 80 million copies ×450 yen , it means 36 billion yen over its lifespan of about 30 years. If you assume YoI's disc sales is about 400k copies ×7000yen, it means 2.8 billion yen
Hajime no Ippo has made 1.2 billion yen per year tankobon sales for about 30 years which suggests the franchise is a rather mainstream shonen title than an anime otaku friendly title.
Late-night anime or anime for anime fan community has always been otaku-centric culture from the very early days(early 2000s) when it comes to disc sales at least.

A westerner like you(us) would probably not get?

Anyway, if you compare ecchi threads va moe threads, the former have more to be honest.

I'm not sure how full it is because I'm not interested in "gay bait" (whatever that is) and not that interested in moe anime.

lol i almost typed "gait"
> what about an anime about horse racing
perhaps

On the other hand, no one ever makes the kind of show I'd most like. Been scratching around but not quite hitting an itch, for a while now.

I don't understand why you think Japan's taste is somehow "distinct" from Western tastes when Japan is infused and extremely sympathetic to a Western "aesthetic." If anything, I would not be surprised if you found that anime fans in the West would buy these shows in the same proportions as they do in Japan.

Once again, gaijins have fallen for the "Japan is so different from us!" meme.

I think people would prefer gay anime over gay bait anime, except actual gay anime would not do all that well so the result is bait

Dunno, at least in my country there seem to be more female anime fans than male anime fans. I see more girls and women at anime conventions than men (and no, only a few of them are cosplayers).

As for mal, I've been on mal since 2009 (gosh, it has been so long ago) and I've always seen a ton of female users. There seemed to be more female users back then than now. Now it seems to be more male users.

As for fujoshi bait, yaoi/shounen ai vibes sell, A LOT.
And fujoshis in Japan - a lot of them adult women with jobs- have a lot of spending power to influence trends:
https://www.animenewsnetwork.com/feature/2016-12-21/what-is-a-fujoshi/.109594

I don't usually ship male characters with each other if they aren't canon (with a few exceptions). But hardcore fujoshis ship almost all good looking guys with each other (and they are plentiful in anime). I think it's because they're used to reading a lot of yaoi manga, which are in the thousands so it's common place for them to read about boy's love. But there are few yaoi/shounen ai anime so they get what they can and if they can't, they start shipping straight guys with each other.

Fujoshis are usually very toxic (not all of them, but most) so I tend to stay away from that community. I used to read yaoi, but stopped after reading most of the good ones and the rest were garbage. It's too much work digging through dirt to find one gem. I'm too tired for that shit.

The yuri community on the other hand is much more welcoming and nice <3

You do know that anime community is, primarily, western, right?
