This episode got NOT a single drop of gore, except for the beginning's replay.

Funny.
But why Jotaro didn't bet the dog's soul, instead of his mother's?

Betting his mother which is one of his sole reasons to go trough with this quest to begin with is a really effective way to show his opponent just how damn confident he is.

HO LY SHIT! Very tense! Very interesting. Jotaro's had a poker face from the beginning. I love how that smug ass hole Darby completely lost his shit! Don't think I've ever seen somebody defeated like that.
Love and Peace!!!

So yeah, the Darby ova fight was amazing, I totally get why someone would prefer it over the anime. It's almost a direct page to screen adaption, but the only downside in my opinion that since the entire fight is in one episode, it has to move at a lightning fast speed. It doesn't lose any quality, but since the anime version is two episodes it gets to move slowly and build an amazing atmosphere that's filled with tension. On the other hand, it's really cool seeing the entire fight in one unbroken sequence, so in the end for me I can't pick a favorite, I like them both equally.

Really really intense. If I ever tried not looking at my cards in a poker game, I'd lose my shirt! Jotaro kicks ass!

Man, the voice actor (dubwise anyway) they chose for D'Arby is um...well, he's certainly something. And his put-upon use of "southern" dialect, definitely left something to be desired.

The D'Arby fight has always been one of Stardust Crusaders top battles, and this version definitely shows why. I do prefer the version from the TV anime but this one was still excellent, always loved gambling type scenarios.

I really, REALLY liked this episode!!! Who knew an action/fighting show like JoJo could have such an intense battle scene, simply at a table!? I loved the complexities of gambling they demonstrated in this episode too. With the games they played and the psychological warfare! Whaat a change of pace!

And I can’t believe Jotaro defeated D’Arby with such an intense tactic! That was the ultimate bluff/pokerface!!! Jotaro couldn’t have even won the game so he had to result in D’Arby THINKING he was on the brink of losing to get his stand to react and release the souls! Man, such great writing. I honestly had no idea how it would all work/play out, but it certainly kept me on the edge of my seat. This was a great episode.

Last but not least, might I say this is the first episode where Jotaro has truly taken over as a principle character since the first episode, and maybe the second and maybe the sixth. This episode was all Jotaro, and this is the most dialogue we’ve gotten out of him in an episode of the OVA’s. Thrilling to see him in action, albeit psychologically. He’s got the strongest stand, and he’s incredibly cunning.

As others have mentioned, the lightning fast pace that this episode followed felt uncanny. I genuinely checked if I was on 2x speed by accident. Further, the site I watched this on had a desync with audio and video making the already awkwardly fast pacing feel harder to follow. And the cherry on top was the dub coming off the worst it's been in my opinion, probably due to the dialogue heavy episode. I wanted to document that this culmination of events made for one of the coolest battles of the series to be unpleasant.

When Jotaro and D'Arby start playing, Jotaro says that D'Arby tried to deal him the second card. And says that the card on the top would go to D'Arby. Which makes sense. However, he then proceeds to pull the second card (the card the D'Arby had tried to deal to Jotaro), and adds it to D'arby's combination, telling that D'Arby would have had three-of-a-kind.

Great episode. The way D'Arby folded had me dying. Great performance by Utsumi.

It would be a dream come true to see this episode, as is, but a bit longer, to have the tension build-up from the tv adaptation. Maybe one day with AI? lol
