What I mean by that is for example that I see a lot of people claiming how harems and isekai are bad anime genres because they are self insert, power fantasy and wish fulfilment. But isn't that their purpose, to be just that, so why is it so wrong? I myself love those kind of anime, like I love In Another World With My Smartphone but get ridicule over it because overall consensus is that that anime is thrash. But what is that anime doing wrong? It is just serving its purpose to be ultimate fantasy for people like me and in that regard it is doing pretty great job, there is literally no more OP MC that Touya.

Isekai has nothing more to do with self-insert than literally any other kind of genre. Idk who told you that bullshit, but it's not true. Isekai isn't even a genre, it's a vague setting description of best if you use it in combination with the fantasy tag. But isekai shows can belong to all kinds of genres. Smartphone just happens to be seen as one of the shittiest Isekai shows so far as far as I can tell. Nothing to do with it being Isekai, just with it being bad. The same people probably loved KonoSuba S2 earlier this year which is just as much of an Isekai. It's just genuinely hilarious in many different ways, therefore people don't shit on it. If people shit on Smartphone it's not because it's isekai, but because they just think it's bad.

There's nothing wrong with you enjoying it of course. But why is it so important to you that everyone else calls it 'good'? Just enjoy it, trashy as it it, and be happy that you don't have higher standards that would make it harder for you to enjoy stuff like that show.
I probably regret this post by now.

Judging anime is almost entirely subjective, it's up to you how to judge it, genre has almost no bearing on that unless maybe you were told a show was mystery and all you got was asspulls and Gary Stu MCs with plot armor instead.

I don't think that people don't like it because its Isekai, I personally think its because its being used way too much and feeding off of the popularity of that genre, and they just get sick of these things and dislike it more because of lack of creativity.

Like with any other genre: by enjoyment.

If you had a blast watching that isekai anime, slap it a 9 or a 10, who cares whatever anyone else says.

theres a certain point where you just have to accept that the anime community like many other media oriented community is full of crybabies who call anything that isn't their idea of a Shakespearian masterpiece:

"trash"
"bad"
"garbage"
"pandering"
"bait"

well at the end of the day, those mfs can cry a fucking river cause anime like smartphone aren't going anywhere, nor should they

You don't judge a genre, you judge a show in that genre.

People usually complain about the quality as well, since these shows are usually lazily thrown together in hopes that people only care about the self-inserting aspects.

It's just that the vocal ones you hear don't really know how to reason.
Same with anything, really.

If anyone says "a whole genre is wrong for ...", then they are talking out of their ass.
If they say "I don't like this genre because ...", then it'd be a more honest answer.

Anyway, a show attempting to self-insert for wish fulfillment is completely fine. It leaves for a shallow MC, but if that's what you like, go for it. Many young adult books follow the formula successfully with the bland, moody, brunette female lead who somehow has all the shirtless guys lust over her. And people like them, which is cool. It is a bit tedious to watch a few shows like this though, even if you enjoy the idea. They all blend together, usually.

Judging certain anime genres will get you nowhere, you must judge people who watch those genres.

The question I've been pondering ever since I entered these forums...

I myself love those kind of anime, like I love In Another World With My Smartphone but get ridicule over it because overall consensus is that that anime is thrash.

I can't really speak for the anime. I decided to avoid it when I learned it was adapting the first 3 volumes in only 12 episodes.
But, if you liked the show, you might wanna check out the novels. Season 2 ain't happening, so that's the only way you'll be able to continue this fun little series.

there is literally no more OP MC than Touya.

Well now, I wouldn't say thaaat. His body doesn't have much in the way of defense, for one.

Don't think there's a "right way" to judge anything.

I usually go with "how much I liked it"

The thing is why should anyone judge an anime by genre... that's pretty dumb. I haven't watch that Smartphone isekai anime but I could easily assume that people didn't like just for what it was, but because it didn't live up to it's taste. It doesn't matter if it's a harem, ecchi or isekai or whatever the genre it has... Anime should be judged by it's own merits.

Using genre to judge an anime itself is a bad approach, one side will bring a type of example that would only support what they want to say while the other is doing the same, the result is a never-ending argument of only saying what you want to say. If you want to talk about anime with someone, then focus on anime as itself.

I don't think smartphone being bad had the the genre to be blamed. sometime when people can't looking for a right word to talk about what they dislike, they tend to use a bigger scope, and that is genre, the thing is, using genre is a wrong move because many other types of stories that share the same genre can have a different theme to the core. For instance, Isekai and harem are just as self-insert as other genres, hence, when people say Smartphone is self-insert because of harem and isekai, you should put more focus on Smarphone being self-insert anime rather than harem and isekai are self-insert -that is if you actually want to think and discuss it. The key is to find and use the right words.

True, one person's trash is a treasure for another, there is nothing wrong with enjoying it, at the same time, there is also nothing wrong with not enjoying it. For this logic, it leads back a question to you why do you want people to call it good though? Is it really that important for other people to call it good too? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
