light yagami just has to be retarded...like he just has to have a mental illness, its just..the way he acts is not normal even for the situation hes in.

Well, that's what we call "sociopathy."

This glorious signature image was created by @Mayumi!

I am the Arbiter of Absolute Truth, and here is my wisdom:

"Anime was always influenced by the West. This is not news.
Shoujo is the superior genre primarily aimed at young people.
Harem/isekai are lazy genres that refuse any meaningful innovation.
There is no 'Golden Age.' There will always be top-shelf anime.
You should be watching Carole & Tuesday."

Guys, you forgot about Tsukiko Sagi from Paranoia Agent. I mean whole anime was dedicated to her psychological issues. She is basically unable to socialize with people, i have no idea how this kind of person even have a job to begin with cuz she is unable to talk even with police officers except that imaginay friend... I feel sorry for her seiyuu cuz all the acting script for that character was ''eh...um...uh...oh'' thats it. 99% of her lines were like that

Such a dumb notion... There's no such thing as a character that's "canonically retarded but no one mentions it".

If their mental illness is not even implied then they don't have one, simple as that.

For example, nobody in Sakurasou says what exactly is wrong with Mashiro. There is obviously something wrong with her (the girl needs help to put on her underwear!), but we have no idea what's her diagnosis. "Autistic" might fit, given that she has trouble relating to other people, but shows a lot of interest in art.

Isn't that the whole story? Adventures of autistic high-school students.
i dont know about retards but chinibyo seems moar like schizophrenics

The difference is, chuunibyou does not get in the way of the patient's life. These people can switch it off at will, and revert to their original self, when it's actually necessary. Chuunibyou is all about "facade", not the true person beneath.

I think somone mentioned how harem MC's normally tend to fall into this category, i'm going to have to agree with that, while it is true that not all of them do, i fairly often catch myself thinking "How the fuck do all this people like this dumbass"

1) Most harem protagonists are reasonably competent at everything that does not involve attractive people throwing themselves at said protagonist.
2) They say in modern Japan, the dynamic is opposite from the west: the girl has to go out of her way to snag a guy, and then enjoy the relationship once they're married.

I love Luffy from One Piece, but come on, nobody normal can be THAT stupid. His lack of common sense never ceases to amaze me.

Another one I absolutely adore, this time female - Osaka from Azumanga Daioh. Retarded is too much, but there has to be something wrong with her, she's just so... slow, and acts like she's out of this world. That's why it's so fun to watch her though.

They say she is actually the subversion of "idiot from Osaka" stereotype. Said stereotype is the exact opposite of Osaka. That's why she doesn't map to any known mental problem.

While he isn't very clever, most of the stupid things he does are because he does not value his own life, not due to lack of brains.

Funny how everybody in that anime is of normal intelligence.

Acting weird, spacey or even being plain stupid does not equal to mental disease, retardation or autism. It's a kind of assumption that doesn't take into account that in anime the relationships and character quirks don't need to match reality.

Osaka can be dense but that's not her main trait, it is being spacey. Whenever she acts slow it is not because she doesn't understand concepts, but rather because she overthinks them (classic example: when she fails at crossing the street in time because she is thinking too hard about how it was to cross the street in Osaka with people not respecting the traffic lights). On the other hand her social skills are just fine, she doesn't seem to find any difficulty talking with people nor does it discomfort her. She is just that, weird and spacey. Inferring a mental disease from her behaviour is quite absurd and misses the point of the character.

Luffy is impulsive and sometimes really stupid, he acts like a kid, but he understands complex schemes and has a strong empathy towards people and situations, he in no way acts like he is intellectually or socially challenged.

I hate to say this but....

Chuunibyou characters have to be autistic or something.

That shit ain't normal.

It might be cute to see Rikka and Kobato act the way they do...but in real life, no way can a 14 year old act like that without others thinking that something is off.

Still love Kobato tho....10/10 goth loli Imouto.

No, Chuunibyou characters aren't necessarily autistic. Especially Rikka is a far too outgoing person to be autistic. Ryouko from the movie Aura: Maryuuin Kouga
Saigon no Tatakai could be autistic with her monotonous speech etc. Also being retarded and being autistic are two very different things. No idea why you're bringing that up in the first place.

And of course It isn't normal. That's why they have a term for that.

To answer the question, Kazuma and Aqua, I guess.

You haven't met many autistic people, have you? One of my cousins has aspergers (autism) and he is incredibly outgoing, whereas my other cousin with aspergers is quiet and keeps to himself. Also during university I met an awful lot of the outgoing aspie type and very few of the quieter type.

Right, they don't say what her problem is but they DO emphasize that she has one and needs special treatment, such information comes directly from the characters mouths. That's what I meant by "implied".

If the presence of an illness or special condition is not brought up by the plot itself then there simply isn't one.
You are not your body, you are your brain, the "self" that emerges from within it.

Well, naturally you would not meet many quiet people, whether aspie or not. They don't try to meet people.
But you're right, there are outgoing people on the autism spectrum. The way I understand it, they tend to get on everybody's nerves. Kind of like Rundelhaus Code from Log Horizon - he keeps using this over-the-top flowery speech even though there is no reason for that.

Edit: It looks like you haven't seen Log Horizon. Chances are, you will enjoy it someday, but for now, I'll think up another example.
Uhh... it's hard when using only the shows we share. Maybe TTGL's Leeron (but it's complicated because he's gay).

@neonshock You can go ahead and say that all Steins;Gate's characters are brain damaged, because it's true

The cute girl archetype is anything but a functional human being, i'll never understand what i'm supposed to like about them.

How are all Steins Gate's characters brain damaged? Can you explain it?

I think Mayuri is naive but she's still a functional human being. She's a high school student, has a part-time job and has friends outside the lab.
