| Simply put, when i watch stuff like Mother's Basement dissecting an Opening theme i get mindblown. I always wanted to know myself to the levek of knowing why i loved X anime or why i hated Y anime... Let alone that this would make a lot easier for myself to know which anime i should ou shouldn't watch. Any tips on this? |

| As yourself basic questions. Did you like the characters , their interactions , and the pacing of their development? Did you enjoy the story? Was it the plot , its pacing , or themes represented ? I'd start there. See if you find yourself liking plot driven or character driven anime more and i'd find anime based around that. You can also go by genres. |

| just ask yourself what you like or what you look for. there is no one that can tell what you like with 100% accuracy, besides yourself. Do you like character interactions, world building, specific narratives, art...? Think of what you really like and dissect what you enjoy, and check what of those things are present in the other things you like. |
| Read reviews. The long, analytical ones. Only for the shows you've already seen (I don't recommend reading reviews before watching). Especially for the shows that you really like and the ones you really hate. It will help you to look from different perspective. If you see which points of the reviews you agree/don't agree with, it will help you to distinguish aspects of anime you like and the ones you don't. |

| It's a long and never-ending process since as you learn more about your taste your taste also develops and you can never quite reach the point of 100% awareness. But it basically comes down to your general mindset. If you're generally self-analytical you'll learn about your taste automatically the more you watch. Just keep questioning the things you think you know, try and compare your experiences of anime to see what differences there were (both in the anime and in your approach to it (expectations, mood, binge-watching or weekly watching etc... all these can have big impacts on how you experience a show but have nothing to do with the actual show itself). And focus more on analyzing how and why you perceive certain elements in a show in a positive or negative light than labeling certain elements as straight-up bad and always blaming the shows for everything if you happen to not end up enjoying a series. Watching an anime is always a two-way-relationship, nothing you feel or think is solely because of the show so don't be satisfied by saying 'I didn't like this so it was bad'. Maybe you had the wrong expectations? Didn't pay enough attention? Were in a shitty mood when you watched it? I try to always focus on what I can do to make a show more enjoyable for me instead of what the show could do to be more enjoyable for me because I can't change the show, I can only change my mindset. Idk, it's hard to properly put into words and a lot of it is probably based on personality and forcing yourself to do these things if they don't come naturally to you might have a bad effect on your anime watching. I've been doing all these things for as long as I remember and while my overly analytical personality and its tendency to overthink things can cause problems in many areas of my life I've always found it very helpful when it comes to entertainment mediums and art and figuring out my likes and dislikes in those areas. |

| There's a lot of things to consider. They could have villain A who is exactly like villain B from another anime, but one is executed better. They could have story A that's like story B from another anime, but one's executed better. You can have preference for smart characters and hate dense characters, but what if one has a better story or better side characters? It all depends. I didn't like Sword Art Online but liked Log Horizon. There's a lot of things to consider when choosing an anime so I always watch all animes I come across and watch a few episodes to get a feel on whether I'd enjoy it or not. It's impossible to say, "this anime is definitely not for me" if you don't give it a try. |

| Basically it's just categorize things u like the most and vice versa. it'll sum thing whether genre type story character artwork or whatever the term u want to see in the big picture. usually the more u dig or the more you have quality time with, have correlation with the more u know/realized what ur preference really is. An example of what i would consider "Fast pacing at it's best" would probably be the 2 first JoJo episodes: They make you feel like you've watched an entire arc, yet, never feel rushed. I would say i rate Interactions > Characters, as for the pacing of their development, it would depend, as far as i can see the character being developed, is fine for me, so, yeah, if the anime have a lot of time to spend in their character development, i don't mind it being slow paced as far as it is progressive. If there's not that much time, i would rather watch it fast paced. I wouldn't say i care that much about themes... but at the same time i do. I think it depends on how they're presented. |

| Compare the shows which your rating differ the most from the average. If you only watch high quality comedy shows then you'll rate comedy high, even if specially you don't fathom comedy |

| This is how I decide to watch an anime or not; I check the pilot and see if it's appealing. I tend to like the shows with hint of romance, drama or fantasy demons and action and shit. Or just shounen! If it sounds good and have 7.0 or more rating, I watch it. Because I seriously think community knows stuff so if they rate it 6, I usually also think it's just fine, I download one episode and see if it excites me. Do I like the art? Do I like the character design? Do I like the soundtrack? Because like Mob Psycho 100 the art, I thought it was so bad, was just not appealing so I delayed it for a while then I thought to myself, DAMN IT'S A COOL SHOW!! Then if I like the first episode, I watch it until the third episode and I usually know if I'm gonna watch it and like it or not. And also I watch a trailer or just look at it pictures to get a general idea of the art of it. I'm not gonna watch NGE because it's old, the art looks shitty and I hate mecha for example. This is how I know if I'm gonna like a show or not. I usually drop the ones I don't like that's why I don't really have low scores on my list. I don't know if someone just likes one genre or they will like every show that belongs to a genre so I wouldn't recommend eliminating according to genres or focusing on them, I'd say figure out why you love them in different aspects. I'd say just rethink the animes you really loved and figure out why! Honestly, that's the best way to figure out your taste. The worst thing about taste and preference is that it constantly changing, I used to get bored of sports animes now I love them, it's one of my favorite genres. I've watched an anime called Sora no Woto and I honestly think I wouldn't have liked it if I'd watched it when I first started since I only loved fantasy romance |

| Anime is really the same as TV series, movies, books, comic books... Personally, I like action and humour, so I look around until I find something I like, no matter what the genre. When it comes to anime, I have found that sports anime usually suit my tastes, so I've watched quite a lot of them and enjoyed most of them. Just remember, not everybody's tastes are the same. Just because I like humour, that does not mean I like all comedy animes - or even most of them. Same with action. There are quite a few popular animes I've tried that just didn't click with me, even though they should have been perfect according to my likes and dislikes. Trust yourself - if you try something and you don't like it, it doesn't mean you should start doubting your preferences. |

| There are two components to expanding one's self-understanding. The first part is to know what parts anime is made of. The second is introspection. You have to think about these parts, and find out which are important for you, and what do you want. So you might have watched and rated highly 5 action anime and 5 SoL anime that are 10% comedy each, but each of them has "comedy" tag, so Graph Anime Plus thought you like comedies. If you want it done right, do it yourself. You know what parts of the shows in your list you enjoyed. |

| im probably just gonna mirror what everyone else has said. Just think about what youve watched. Maybe rewatch a show you like to make it easier. gaining a little knowledge of cinematography couldnt hurt either, it could help you put your thoughts into words a little more easily. |
