ok before i get started i want to let you guys know that im not trying to be a dick, or hate on Toriko.

i started this thread hoping i might gain some perspective.

i tried watching the Toriko anime idk a year back or so.
i couldn't even make it past episode 3.
I try to stick with a show for awhile before i decide whether its good or not, but with Toriko i just couldn't do it.

Toriko looks like a carbon copy goku with blue hair.
the whole basis for the series seams retarded to me
i mean if i wanted to watch a show pretty much entirely about food, then i would watch the cooking channel.

once again im not trying to be a dick, just explaining why i wasn't able to get into it.

so what is it that people like about Toriko? does it get better later on? or is the entire series like that?

P.S i know this is the manga section...not the anime section.
but my question applies to both...plus i figured i would get an answer faster here compared to the anime section

To be fair its only really popular in good old Japan ,but then again a lot of stupid stuff is popular there so its not all that surprising.Barely anyone actually cares or knows about it in the west.
I sometimes watch chinese cartoons/stuff and share unsolicited opinions.

Pretty dumb opening post. You watched only 3 episodes, what exactly were you expecting.

> I would watch cooking shows instead

I didn't watch the series, but it's painfully obvious, what it offers. It's about the adventure and hunt for exotic foods and such, it's greatest asset is probably it's world building. In what cooking shows would you find exotic creatures that are food?

Same can be said regarding Luffy, since he is extremely similar to Goku, but I don't see you having a problem with that.

It's basically one piece + the food concept.

i was at least able to get into one piece. sure it seamed boring at first but it wasn't that bad.

but with Toriko i honestly couldn't stomach more then 3 episodes.

Also One Piece at least has a good basis.
He is a pirate, and wants to gather powerful nakama, and became the pirate king.

where as Toriko is just about going after rare ingredients.
i mean does he even have a goal other then finding said rare ingredients?

Im all for an adventure manga, if the idea behind it is actually interesting.

however watching 2 guys travel the world, searching for ingredients, making food, and eating said food seams like the dumbest storyline ive ever heard.

finally luffy may be similar to Goku but he doesn't feel like a carbon copy. also he is actually interesting imo.

I hope you get the point I'm trying to make here.

You only watched 3 episodes, I don't think you can say he is a carbon copy. 3 episodes is not enough to judge anything. If it's boring and not your cup of tea, it's that, I don't see much purpose to this thread, as I doubt a Toriko fan will convince you of anything.

the point of the thread is me being curious. If there is more to the series then the whole food thing. like does it tie into something deeper. or is it pretty much like that the whole way through.

if there is more to it then that, and if it actually seams interesting to me then i might give it a second shot.

anyways you obviously have stick up your ass. i don't know if you're in a bad mood...or if your always a douche, but im done talking to you.

well that was ridiculously taken out of context.
all i wanted was a legitimate answer whether or not there is more to the plot other then going around killing animals, and making food out of them.

so far all ive seen is people making jokes, and other people ragging on me for only watching 3 episodes.

whatever though i'm done...obviously im not gonna get an answer.

srry i didnt see your post sooner, toriko is an amazing but underrated manga

1) toriko is about toriko a man who wants to find the legendary "GOD"
2 a weak looking guy komatsu travels together with toriko on his journey ( but oh boy toriko and komatsu have so many misterys it gives me chills.
3 the character designs are so freaking amazing and the characters are so badass
4 the fights are some of the best in battle shonen ( not jokinng)
5 the creatures are unique and some of th craziest and coolest in manga
6 there is an evil organization bishokukai that you will love
7 there is much foreshadowing and most of the story is already planned out since chapter 1
8 the plot twists and schock effects are very good in toriko
9 the worldbuilding is even better then one piece ( you will see why )
10 you will see toriko in a way you never saw before

the first hype begins in the cave, then the regal mamoth arc and the most people are addiced to toriko after they read the " ice hell arc '

most people replying to this thread only watched the anime, but the anime adoptation is shit compared to the manga.

and i wont spoil but there is an arc in toriko that is equal to marineford in toriko

trust me if toriko had an anime adoptation that followed the manga it would be even poular has hxh

I had the same thought as you at one point i was like "An anime about food? I've got the cooking channel" So i watched Naruto, One piece, Bleach, Fairy tail, Hunter x hunter and all the other popular shounen putting toriko off until there was nothing left to watch in shounen category with a decent amount of episodes.

Honestly was much better than i thought it would've been one thing if they were just trying to eat the food to fill their bellies but with the gourmet cells its like the rarer/more exotic and hard to capture the ingredient is the more powerful you become from eating it, different types of rare ingredients give you different capabilities like "Air" letting you breath in a place without oxygen and heal just from breathing.

It quickly became less about the food part of the show and more about the adventure and trials to capture the goal, lots of different power ups and food honor to learn. if i were gonna tell someone the least amount to watch before deciding i would say get to the end of the Reggal Mammoth/Jeweled meat story before deciding to stop or not.
If you aint got that kind of time atleast get to like puffer whale one or battle wolf episode.

Also isnt just as simple as going to the land with the ingredient and looking until you find it theres countless different strange creatures with different battle levels that give you an amazing grasp on how much they've grown since the show started seeing as their first capture is below level 10 and now they are seeing creatures well above 1000+ level. But once you get past those and get your ingredient they have the "special preparation ingredient" which can't be prepared with regular means and requires immense skill and knowledge and being able to hear an ingredients "voice" to be able to successfully eat the best ingredients

if you enjoy the creative and vast feel that one piece gives you you'll experience the same feeling from toriko, a gigantic planet filled with countless ingredients more than you can imagine of all varieties and gourmet cells affect everyone differently allowing them to specialize in different things like Poison man or Zebra who uses his voice as a weapon.

and ontop of it all the way they display the ingredients and how good they make them sound when they eat em will make you hungry.

Hello,

I am currently reading the manga, and I just looked upon topics of this kind.

I just went thru the manga to the point where they get the jewel meat, and I must admit I have a very hard time getting into it.

To this point, I find very hard to get any coherence of the world of Toriko, it looks like a cluster fuck without any rules, where anything can happen without any serious explanation, I dont know if I make any sense, I have a hard time putting into word what i feel.

The same goes with the fighting, where the confuseness reaches peak for me, the characters seems to be pulling off crazy attacks from nowhere, I have absolutely no idea to who is powerful or not, and the last fight I saw with the GT robo Vs Toriko was the same, he just ate some meat and went crazy super saiyan all of a sudden, I was like ".... wait what ?"

I am not saying this is bad, but I have hell of troubles getting into it.

I dont even understand the "full course" they are setting up, is this something they want to sell ? To make ? But given the crazy hard to find ingredients, how can they hope to make it complete ? And for what ? To eat it once and be done with it ?

I am totally confused.

I think your problem here is very similar to other's. You're looking for a coherent plot and an exciting story with lots of mysteries and cliffhangers. I can tell you now, that you won't get them until like chapter 150-170.

I guess the reason why Toriko is more popular in Japan is because the Japanese people are more obsessed with food than Westerners. Also most of the foods introduced in Toriko come from Japanese/Asian cuisine, so for Westerners words like omurice, yakisoba, miso soup wouldn't say a thing. The world of Toriko is all about using fantasy tools to overexaggerate almost everything. If you can understand how stimulating it is to make sashimi of a legendary whale that comes every 10 years and carries a deadly poisonous sack in a random part of its body then you can understand why people kept on reading this manga.

Toriko goes at a very fast pace, it doesn't drag on an arc for long, most arcs are under 30 chapters.
Yes, it's a wild place without rules aka nature, the environments and creatures are all extreme and this is just the start.

It's all about how delicious the ingredients are.
The more delicious things you eat, the stronger you become.
And that's measured in the capture levels, the higher it is the stronger you are.
The jewel meat is one of the most delicious in the human world, so toriko got a huge powerboost and beat the gt robo.

Ingredients is everything in the toriko world, the economy runs on it, they build houses made of ingredients, trading and even wars are fought over ingredients.
The full course is a person's menu of the most delicious ingredient he's eaten, so yes they can sell it for money, but it's more of a personal goal for yourself.

Why isn't all of humanity super strong? keep reading, the next arc explains some things about the world and why everything is so strong, after that comes the ice hell arc (one of the best arcs)

I don't know. I've read a bunch of a jump titles and watched many adaptions too. Toriko has a fairly standard format overall, but it's crazy imaginative and what personally strikes me is that Toriko has tons of MUSCLE, which reminds me of older titles like Hokuto no Ken, Dragon Ball and early JJBA. There's lots of stupid stuff, but then again, so does everything else. It's just part of the fun. As for the systems, I don't think there is anything strange about understanding the power levels, but some attacks are whatever tier (again, common in battle manga). It may not be the most sophisticated manga, but it serves its purpose.

Yeah it's just not for you I guess, it's just really silly fun and nice art in the beginning.

does it get better later on?

From the beginning of the series? Yeah, near the end it gets alot worse though. From Volume 22 onward it's just a downward spiral. Volume 31-35 was okay I guess. The series was at it's best Volume 8-12 imo but never really ever got better than that. Volume 18 and 19 was pretty fun though.

Look, it gets alot worse, I think many would disagree with me *when* that is but most would say it was pretty good at some point and it has it's moments. It's hardly worth watching the anime of this series, though, but it's a..fine read. At the end of the day, it's alot of really buff dudes eating monsters and a crying chef, it stays true to that in the end.

Edit: Oops, this post is a little old.

It has a Dragon Ball feel to it with a lot of action, adventure with a main protagonist with a big appetite. However it does stand out from other battle shonen because it doesn't focus on fighting tournaments (well from up to the point I read) but mainly focuses on hunting different exotic animals in order to prepare the best dishes.
