Golden Days. It is not just a good shounen ai, it is a great manga in my opinion. The ending is one of the most beautiful I have ever read. It manages to say a lot about love and loss, and about the nature of the passage of time and its effect on us.

Plus, the relationship is really cute. It has everything.

Edit: And... I just realized it's on your favorites.

I don't have "the best", but my fav':

Shinkuu Yuusetsu and Kabe no Naka no Tenshi, both from the same mangaka. Because it is soft, warm, fluffy, beautiful and others words in the same register.

Tokyo Babylon. Because it is so so so tragic and horrible. By extension, my fav' yaoi pairing come from that manga. And yes, I like tragedies.

Thomas no Shinzou and Kaze to Ki no Uta (for that one I've only watched the anime, since the scanlation of the manga is far from complete). Well, I'm in love classic old-school shōjo manga and in love with the old-school bishōnen too, so why I wouldn't love the best yaoi of that time? The ambiance, the drawing, the character development, the story-telling, the mythological references everywhere, the level of writing, the gorgeous bishōnen… 💙

Prunus Girl. Fundamentally it is a standard rom-com, and a cross-dressing yaoi. But unlike most of the manga in the like, that one isn't gross, it is just cute and funny.
But for me, it is mostly because of Aikawa, the cross-dresser, that character warms my heart… I'm a MtF trans', and I think I really need a character like that. And there is also a side yuri romance, which acts as a bonus too.

there's a few

purely based on how good it is:
http://myanimelist.net/manga/7668/Complex
this probably touches most of the homosexual/LGBT issues in a realistic way. also it follows two characters from their childhood to adulthood. it's very down to earth and powerful.

then, a good one about fatherhood:
http://myanimelist.net/manga/22687/Sorenari_ni_Shinken_Nan_desu
very feel good, natural, well paced and best of all, cute. it's short and simple.

then, a high school based one:
http://myanimelist.net/manga/21277/Rutta_to_Kodama
this is the most romantic BL. it has sex scenes but they actually feel loving and sweet. i don't even know how to describe it. the main pairing has a lot of chemistry and it isn't just seme/uke dynamics.

then, an author that has 3 BL series i would recommend that i haven't mentioned yet:
http://myanimelist.net/people/5583/Asumiko_Nakamura
she is honestly such a blessing. really unique writing/art style! doukyuusei (+sequels) are her more simple, cutesy series. her darkest ones are j no subete and copernicus which are both very well written but super dark and has many mature themes, way beyond sex and prostitution.

next, i'd like to mention an anime director/writer who has created 5+ short BL anime so far. she is a treasure.
http://myanimelist.net/people/13949/Soubi_Yamamoto
all her series are pure and innocent. she uses vivid and bright colours and simple storytelling. i really adore her style.

next, two more artists that are consistently good and should get recognition:
✧ yamamoto kotetsuko - cutesy consensual stories
✧ asou kai - plot-focused stories, very mature and realistic

lastly, i'll mention some of the ones with BEST ART and BEST SMUT. here we go:
✧ kuroneko kareshi series
✧ hidoku shinaide (and everything by this author)
✧ katekyo
✧ love stage!
✧ ten count (and everything by this author)

I am so surprised that no one has mentioned Let Dai. I know it's technically not a manga, but who cares. I love it because it is a shonen ai while still being so much more that just a cute love story like they normaly are(which is not a bad thing)....guys you just have to read it, trust me.

Love Stage!! but maybe I'm just being biased because that's the first Yaoi manga I got into all those years back. It gets so unrealistic and border-line rapey at some parts but I still enjoy it because Ryouma is just a dumb ass in love and we can't blame the poor fella for that.

The best for me right now is Canis - Dear Mr.Rain/Hatter. I'm so in love with her art style.
Also I'd recommend Mauri to Ryuu, Itou-san, Puchitto Hajiketa, Sakura-gari, Rutta to Kodama(my first yaoi), Koitomo, etc.

All manga of Hinako/Ayane Yamano/Scarlet Beriko/ Madarame Hiro/Ogawa Chise/Harada(if you love dark-theme)/Mishima Kazuhiko(if you like young seme x older uke)/Psyche Delico/etc.

There's still a lot more but I don't remember rn rip.

Sakura Gari was the darkest i've ever read. But i liked it anyway, there was so much mystery and the characters were interesting. Rutta to Kodama, it was one of my first yaoi too. It have not good trama, but the art and the scenes are so cute, there's no way i don't like it. In the autors list you wrote, i only know Ogawa Chise and Harada, i love Yora to asa no Uta! I'll check the others autors know. I recommend you guys Kyuugou and Miyamoto Kano.

! Tried to put it in order !
! Missing remarks don't imply that the manga wasn't as good !

Theory Of Happiness - Hidamari Da Kikoeru
School Life | Shounen-Ai | Slice of Life
12 chapters
It's the latest manga I read and enjoyed. Just wanted to share the cuteness (ノ*゚▽゚*) and the feelings I had to go through .・゚゚・(/ω\)・゚゚・. It's an emotional rollercoaster - especially when you have to wait for the next chapters (which I had).

Another Sleepless Night - Konya mo Nemurenai
Comedy | Fantasy | Romance | Yaoi
19 chapters
I liked everything about this manga. Even the fantasy ascpect - which really suprised me because normally I don't read that much fantasy.

Seven Days
Drama | Romance | School | Shounen-Ai | Slice of Life -- 13 chapters

Hidden Flower - Hana Wa Saku Ka
Drama | Romance | Slice of Life | Yaoi
34 chapters
It's long but definitely worth the time.

The Tyrant Falls In Love - Koisuru Boukun
Comedy | Drama | Romance | Slice of Life | Smut | Yaoi -- 23 chapters

Himegoto Asobi
Comedy | Drama | Romance | Slice of Life | Yaoi -- 15 chapters

Lovers Doll
Comedy | Fantasy | Shounen-Ai | Yaoi
6 chapters
I'm still recovering... T.T

Ameiro Paradox
Comedy | Drama | Romance | Slice of Life | Yaoi -- 13 chapters - ongoing

Capital Of Flowers
Drama | Romance | Shounen-Ai | Slice of Life
3 chapters
The feels TT.TT *trying not to spoiler*

Only The Flower Knows
Drama | School | Romance | Slice of Life | Yaoi
12 chapters
Is connected with the manga Capital of Flowers.

Kigurumi Planet
Adventure | Comedy | Drama | Romance | School | Shounen-Ai
12 chapters
I really liked it!

Kiraboshi Dial
Comedy | Drama | Romance | Slice of Life | Yaoi
6 chapters
The main characters are a bit older (around 28, I guess) and the story takes place in a small town where nearly everyone knows each other - so it wasn't that cliché. Also, I really liked discovering the past of the characters and the reasons for their odd behavior.

There's No Way I'm In Love With You - Kono Ore Ga Omae Nanka Suki Na Wakenai
Comedy | Romance | School Life | Shounen-Ai | Yaoi -- 5 chapters

Count 0
Comedy | School Life | Yaoi
6 chapters
Great story idea.

Bukiyou Na Silent
Comedy | Romance | School Life | Shounen-Ai | Sports | Yaoi
15 chapters
The end of the manga (or the scanlation group just dropped it ò.ó) wasn't that good. I hoped to see more of the characters and the side-couple - which I really liked. But I liked the manga though, it's cute, funny and the begining was great.

Super Lovers
Comedy | Drama | Romance | School Life | Shounen-Ai | Yaoi -- 24 chapters - ongoing

Usagi Otoko Tora Otoko
Comedy | Yaoi -- 12 chapters

Lucky Number 13
Comedy | Drama | School Life | Shounen-Ai | Sports | Yaoi -- 13 chapters

Samishigariya No Love Letter
School Life | Shounen-Ai | Supernatural
5 chapters
I knew how it would end but I still enjoyed it very much.

DistopiA - An Incomplete World - DistopiA - Mikansei Na Sekai
Romance | School Life | Sci-Fi | Yaoi
6 chapters
Same as in Samishigariya No Love Letter.

His Special Boyfriend - Kare No Tokubetsu Na Kare
Comedy | School Life | Yaoi -- 7 chapters - ongoing

Nar Kiss (5 chapters) | Tsumasaki Ni Kourozu (8 chapters) | Konbini-kun

  • Inu to Tsubame - Tells a story of a boy who mourns the death of his older brother. I really love the fact that his brother's had made such a huge impact and story than the main character. The manga is quite a tragedy/psychological as it deals with death and also hints of being a transvestite. Bruh, this manga is damn good.

  • Kurayami ni Strobe - I read this during my yaoi-noob days where I used to read yaoi that isn't that good. I fell in love with how Hayakawa Nojiko is able to emphasise the two's relationship. Also, I couldn't agree more to what Arata said when he said the reasons why he prefers taking photographs of his male classmates rather than the female. Also, the sequel about the other character is quite lovely too.

  • J no Subete - Not everybody likes this yaoi because of the very psychological and how it is very dark. I was surprised to the fact that I really like it despite that I tend to avoid rape and mostly read fluff shounen ai with little or no smut. The art style manages to make the atmosphere quite morbid.

  • Senpai - I think I really like the tragedy because this one also deals with someone's death - the main character's Senpai's death. Works by Bikke are an instant like for me, so Shinkuu Yuusetsu is a great one too. Bikke's art on the cover are always so stunning @_@

  • Udagawachou de Mattete yo? - I like it because of the character dynamic since I was expecting a bit light-heartedness from this manga. I would love to watch the drama adaptation. This manga deals with cross-dressing and of course yaoi.

  • 19 Days - A manhua, but who cares about that when this is one of the funniest shounen ai/yaoi out there. Just go out already you two! It's not always happy and two high-schoolers doing absurd things, this manhwa has pretty not-so-comedic scenes. Anyway, today is the author's birthday so, happy birthday Old Xian! I love your your works!

Fave Mangaka: Hayakawa Nojiko, Bikke, Nakamura Asumiko, Kumota Haruko

Oh yeah, a lot of people mentioned Seven Days as their favourite... It's such a shame that I didn't enjoy it as much as others. I even tried reading it twice and watched the drama, I wasn't getting a lot out of it.

@lady_freyja I don't think I could ever consider Prunus Girl yaoi or shounen-ai, but it's a great great read! Have you ever read Hourou Musuko?

I agree with @Mayuka on Complex. It has some stuff that kind of angered me while I read it, but I could see why they were included. Some people suggested lots of awesome things. I also like works by Est Em and Yamamoto Kotetsuko.

I consider "male cross-dresser x guy", or "male CD x male CD" as a sub-genre of the yaoi. But I totally understand that others people might think differently on that matter, I don't mind. へへ

Even if in the case of Prunus Girl, Aikawa is probably more than a simple "male CD", he has some ambiguities and may approaches a trans' level, and that's why I like him so much, more than most of the standard male CDs.

And yup, I know Houhou Musuko, I've watched the anime, and I'll probably read the manga some day in the future.
It was a nice watch, with a lot of subtleties. But with it, we definitely and explicitly enter the trans' world. へへ

The anime follow relatively strictly the manga (I remember there is one or two minor differences, but unimportant).
So if you liked the anime, you'll like the manga on the common part.
But of course the story of the manga continue further, with Izumi beginning his show-biz life, which create some tensions inside the couple… until something improbable and totally silly happened.

Since how silly that thing is and how important it is in the plot, I guess it is an "hit or miss" thing.

Personally I rated better the manga than the anime, but I tend to prefer the romance manga over the romance anime, and I found the silly thing quite fun.

ps: I read the French publication, so I've read the 5 first volumes. I dunno how is the scanlation or the publication in other countries.

Oh man. That's a tough question.
Well, I have my favorites, of course, but that's just me. As far as best goes-- I'm gonna second Kaze to Ki no Uta-- it's so classic and important to the genre, and it's really good. I was surprised how complex the panel design was, and the characters are more interesting than I thought they would be.

(Same basic point on interesting characters and importance to the genre for Ai no Kusabi, but it's all novels and anime and not manga so it doesn't count, eheheh.)

Hmm. As far as newer manga goes, I think (as others have said) that Asumiko Nakamura's manga is really important. Her art is unmistakable and intensely beautiful, and her stories are interesting and often heartbreaking. Her characters are so expressive... but their stories are often very... intense. And messed up.

Another stand-out is Takanaga Hinako, of Koisuru Bou-kun, Bukiyou na Silent, and Little Butterfly fame. She's a great writer, I think, and her characters are just gorgeous. She also does eroticism really well even though (or because? I don't know...) she doesn't show everything.

Crimson Spell is another manga that comes to mind, popular both in Japan and over here in the US-- it mixes fantasy adventure with some very adult content... and it DOES show everything, haha. XD Yamane-sensei also wrote the (also popular) Finder series, which is less to my taste, but I hear it gets funnier as it goes.

Also! Silver Diamond. VERY light on the BL front (it has a 'homoerotic overtones' tag on TV Tropes... there's a main male 'couple' but they never even kiss) but it's a very fun adventure/fantasy series, if the guy/guy sexual elements aren't that important to you.

(Personally? I'm all about Hideyoshico's Nen Nen Sai Sai, Ougi Yuzuha's Leopard Hakusho books 2 and 3, and everything Kunieda Saika's ever written. But that's just me.)

Ugh, I've read so many amazing ones but I didn't start trying to keep track of everything until maybe a year ago (I've been reading BL manga for 8 years) so I don't remember most of them. Also, all my manga is boxed up in the basement, so...sorries. Anyway!

I love most of Miyamoto Kano's works, but her "Rules" series will always hold a special place in my heart (here's the link to the entire Rules Universe. I highly, highly recommend her as a unique manga-ka.

And then there's Hyouta Fujiyama's works. I have such a thing for mature romances. "Freefall Romance/Rakka Sokudo" and "Spell" are probably my favorites.

Close The Last Door by Yamada Yugi will always be a fave. I quite liked the anime adaption, too.

Ikenai Otoko by Takao and Kamuro was super fun! There's not enough yaoi manga that feature big, beefy men and switching!

Jouzetsuna Yubi is one of my favorite shorts by Naona Bohra.

Yamakami Riyu is another favorite manga-ka of mine. I loved "Vanilla," "Deep Flower," and a bunch of others.

Sorenari ni Shinken Nan Desu by Asou Kai was fab.

Takanaga Hinako's Little Butterfly series was one of the first yaoi manga I ever read/purchased, so it's super special to me. The same can be said for Kawai Chigusa's La Esperanca series.

Someone already mentioned "Seven" so I won't bother rec'ing it again.

Ajkjdlkasjdakj there are a bunch of other ones but it'll take me forever to hunt them down. I'll edit when I remember more.

Can't even remember the titles of all the ones I've read (I'm a huge BL fan, you see) and I actually love a lot of them. But the only title that comes to mind at the moment is―Haru wo Daiteita.

It's not too impressive in terms of art esp. at the beginning (it's quite old) but it definitely got better over the years. It's a long running yaoi with a lot of depth which is a big + for me. I always prefer yaoi with an actual story behind it.

A really underrated yaoi in my opinion is Rules. It's very different from typical yaoi in the respect that it's actually pretty realistic, but either way its a great read and more people should know about it. Another good shounen-ai is Bagjwi Sayug, a korean manhwa. It's got it's silly moments while overall keeping it relatively serious. One of the MC's is also a vampire, whether that makes a diff or not.

For Shounen-ai:

Hidamari ga Kikoeru and Koimonogatari.
Both have great characters and are more realistic.

*edit for Prunus Girl. Great comedy. Loved both the MCs. These two dorks are practically made for each other.

For yaoi:

Honto Yajuu. The relationship between the main characters are sweet, the side characters have nice development, and the characters are on point.

Acid Town. I love the plot in this one (the actual plot not "plot"). The characters are all interconnected (whether they know it or not), and everyone receives some kind of development.

At nr.1 it's a tie between Love Stage!! and Honto Yajuu. They're both sweet and lovey-dovey, with a good amount of smut. Not too little, not too much.
At a close nr.2 there's Ten Count, that's a bit more serious, as it is a psychological manga (which is my favorite genre).
And at nr.3 there's Caste Heaven, which I'm currently reading, and it's also a psychological. It's a little more messed up, but in a good way.

Hidouku Shinaide = Good story and less censorship. The guy was a really smart scholar in school and the seme was really hot <3 In order to stay in this school, the uke student must remain a scholar but he had problems so the seme told him to cheat during the test and he did. It was black mail in the start but I highly recommend!

uke = bottom / seme = top

Let me recommend some:
Love Stage!! - jelous seme is cute
Konya mo Nemurenai - uke is hopeless romantic so he tried a dating site but contacted the devil instead xD

There is so much good yaoi!

My number one is Doushitemo Furetakunai.
It gives me chills everytime. Yoneda Kou is such a genius, and this yaoi has everything you need.

Recently I also got hooked with the yaoi Rouge.
Im in love with the characters. It treats of rape, and the characters are so refreshing in the way they abord the subject (for a yaoi i mean).

My current favorite is Escape Journey, just because the art is beautiful, and the story is really really sweet.

& Naoto's smile is the most pure thing ever.

Junjou romantica. It just kept getting better and better and I couldn't stop reading. Still can't though for awhile another chapter hasn't come out. It is amazing to me. Maybe not to other people but to me it is the best.

-Doukyuusei and its sequels. That one was a masterpiece.
-Blue Sky Complex, and many other work by Ichiwaka Kei.
-There are many many others, but I am too lazy to mention them. Just check out my list. The ones that I rated more than 7, meaning 8 and above, are considered some of my favorites

Harada's one of my favorite yaoi/shounen ai artists.
This one is my favorite of hers (it's pretty tame compared to her other works): https://myreadingmanga.info/harada-piercings-eng/
Good luck!

Sakura gari i'd say. If you don't mind rape.
Yoneda kou's works are good as well.

All the manga done by Owaru (author's name). It's short and might not be the best, but it is good. Try reading one.
