It's funny how people are getting so salty over a shitty af ship. This is Erased all over again lmfao. Anyway, shitty romance that has no meaning besides getting the masses all riled up. Subaru's still a one-dimensional character, so is everyone else. Shite Anime remains shite. Can't wait till it plummets more into more trashville! MORE EDGE MORE LIFE! |

What does that even mean? that also bugged me. maybe the ordeal was to kill emilia knowing that puck would destroy the whole world because of him losing her? it's like the cult wants to use puck for all the dirty work i dunno just shallow speculations man my problem with this anime is, the whole week of waiting for another episode is pure suffering |

He knows he can come back when he dies, so why isn't he the strongest person in the anime!? He has advanced knowledge of every situation! I'm not going to go into more detail on that, because I will never stop, but back to this episode. Please dear god. I hope he is over his cowardice now. I thought two episodes back where he had the hatred in his eyes for Betelgeuse, that he would go on a rampage and we would see some action, but nah Subaru just screams and cries. Now there is hope again after this episode. I hate to admit it, but me hating the last two episodes, will probably make me like the next few even more. I hope that is the way the writers planned it at least. Ok so, I started wandering around the wiki, as you do when you want to know more about a character. And I found out that when Betelgeuse dies (I think Subaru kills him) Subaru takes his powers. Does this mean Subaru can take all of the sins' powers? Which means he will become the most powerful! Even though I think he is already with his Return By Death. But ya, bet your sorry you clicked the button now. My pain is yours. |

Rem's unwavering love is pretty realistic for a teenager. A young girl's love is VERY strong. He will never find a woman who was already heartbroken to be that dedicated. She's probably going to spend her last breath just dying for every last bit of attention from Subarude. Yeah I was wondering, since Emilia will EVENTUALLY die, does that mean Puck will just kill everyone regardless? What a shithead! |

Man, why is there so many people here at each other's throats? If someone just doesn't like Re:Zero leave them be and if someone does like Re:Zero vice versa It doesn't help with some of the people in here trying to leave bait by shit talking the show and using buzzwords galore. It's even worse since there's them and then the Re:Zero fans who try to defend every flaw the series have and then ofc The Shippers Whyyyy Just because you confess to someone doesn't mean your love will be given back. I feel like some people are self inserting with Rem and are more pissed than usual because what happened reminded them of when they were rejected. You confess to the guy and then he says he likes someone else. They act like that's the ultimate evil? I'm so confused |

People do that stuff to hype shows all the time, it was just blatantly obvious this time. I don't care to be honest, just wanted to point it out to show others about troll accounts bashing hyped shows. I am done with this convo, since I think I got my point across. since u posted your comment the exact moment i edited mine here u go You are obviously an emo fanboy dude.Learn to accept there are silent anime watchers, just cuz we post on the same day and have similar join date we must be trolls?I couldn't be assed to comment other animes since i use MAL only to keep track of my "plan to watch"animes. But this show disappointed me so much that it got me to post a comment. Why should i use and create another account just to post shit like this salty fanboy did cuz he prefers Rem Ship? And it's also obvious that other dude isnt a troll either, jus a salty person whose ship sank lol But i guess it's hard for a close minded person to understand anything i wrote and try to tell you so I gladly give up and leave you to your own ,enjoy playing detective. You know what, maybe I was wrong, since if you were a troll account you wouldn't be wholeheartedly defending yourself or replying to me. So if your not I apologize. It wasn't just the join date though, it was the post right after and the post count which is how alt/troll accounts post stuff to hate on shows. I still don't see how I'm a fanboy if the show isn't even in my favorites and I'm not hyping it up on the hype train lol. Its not even my favorite of the season (which I will reserve to each anime last episode). Its just that we get so many troll accounts posting in this series discussion that trash talk it for the sake of hating and no other good reason then use multiple accounts to do it to make it look like more people hate it and downvote it which is dumb (you don't have to be a fanboy to be annoyed by that, it would annoy me in an series discussion of an anime that I even don't like). So sorry if you are new to posting here and if you are not a troll. It just looked that way from previous experiences of people using alts exactly how it was laid out in your circumstance, but maybe it was just a random coincidence. Finally the old Subaru is back! Also... WHAT IN THE FLYING FUCK SUBARU!? YOU REJECTED REM!? WHAT THE HELL HAS EMILIA DONE TO MAKE YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH HER? She has been in like 5 episodes. Yes, I feel bad for Emilia, but she gives off that bitch vibe. Rem is more loyal and more cute. Rem has been by Subaru's side for such a long time and has been completely friendly and dutiful to Subaru's cause while dealing with his mental issues from his Return by Death. |

While I do agree with his loving Emilia, to me it was well within reason for him to truly fall in love with Rem. Someone whom he has literally seen die for him and care for him and have patience with him regardless of everything multiple times. Loving Emilia almost comes off too much like lust. Or some connection that he thinks is there but never happened. A relationship almost repeatedly forced onto her since the beginning. Almost as if she is his obsession rather than true love. Kinda reminds me vaguely of naruto and hinata as naruto used to only want Sakura. |

However, Rem rejected his offer to run away and get married. She rejected him FIRST. I can understand her not to wanting to leave her friends/family, but she did reject him first, regardless. The curse may be binding him to Emilia though. Rem's little speech could be possession from Satella to get him back within her grips. I find it very possible, Satella is a crafty one after all! Also, once Emilia dies AGAIN, the world will be destroyed by Puck again anyway, he has no choice. Rem's job is to keep that from happening? |

Amazing episode! I liked rem and I usually don't ship characters but I did this time but I don't feel bad at all, because rem was so awesome and on point this episode it makes me look up to the character more. These past episodes we've seen a much darker Subaru whose decision making fell to an all time low, but it makes sense. If your human and you go through what he has, I think even the strongest will break. To see Rem inspire her hero and bring him back to sanity was so strong I got chills. I can't wait for these last episodes, I have no idea what's in store, I don't want to, I just want to experience and watch them. |

Really it's dripping with what you just described: vindictive, bitter spite and a desire to prove to people that 'there are no heroes. Life sucks. Everyone is evil. Etc. You want to read fantasy and be a hero? FUCK YOU!" Yup. We get it. I'm tired of it. Real life doesn't work that way. If you can't see it, I'm very sorry for you. But to the episode: Yup, that’s it I’m done watching. WHY you ask? Well before I give my reasons I need to give a bit of background/explanation, and I’m gonna start by saying: if you’re just going to reply to criticize, insult, etc…me or what I say, piss off, I don’t care. I’m never going to read this thread (seriously I’ve never in my years of using Myanimelist visited the forums and I’m only doing so now to offer some thoughts for people who might feel like I do. So keep the discussion civil so that other’s reading aren’t bored of your immaturity.) This is going to be a LONG post (tried to cover everything since I won't be back lol. Just food for thought). So. Why am I done watching? Is it because I’m disappointed that Rem/Subaru didn’t happen? Yes, in a VERY SMALL sense. But there’s a lot more to it and I’ll get to the real reasons below. First. What makes a good story? Classics are generally considered classics because they are timeless. How are they timeless? They communicate truths and realities that all people in all cultures can relate to in some way or another. Not to say that non-classics are less valuable, not at all. But that’s what makes a ‘good’ story good. The characters are TRUE. Relatable, realistic, and reflect REALITY. What about fantasy? I mean, it’s a fantasy right? Nope. Fantasy is great because while it IS an escape, and can explore new lands, ideas, and people, it is still grounded in reality. The more alien a fantasy is, the less we can even comprehend it, much less sympathize with or care about the characters. The human people at least must be realistically human. Unfortunately, fantasy has been going through a rebellious phase lately. In the last 10 years or so, all those authors who grew up reading light fluffy high fantasy like Tolkien and McDonald (I’m being sarcastic) decided “fuck that shit! Life isn’t happy! Life SUCKS! And I’m going to make sure EVERYONE KNOWS IT SUCKS!” And so they did! They decided to right realistic, gritty, ‘dark’ fantasy. Where the heroes aren’t impervious to danger, bad things happen, etc etc. Because that’s how real life is right? RIGHT?! Well, no not really. And here’s the background for the first reason/problem. Deconstructions only work when they are communicating something new, and ONLY at that. Otherwise they must be Reconstructions. That is, you can’t just say ‘fuck swords! Swords are unrealistic, so there are no swords in this world!’ forever. You have to eventually REPLACE swords with something. “Instead they have…SPEARS! Spears are realistic!” Or better yet “BUT some people use them anyway because theyre SUCH GOOD WARRIORS!” Eventually, it has to come full circle. But sadly right now we’re still stuck in the rut. Go look at all of the most popular fantasy of any medium (games, shows, books, anime) and you will see that all true fantasy (IE, not Magical Girl or Magical Realism) is dark, gritty, ‘adult’ themed stuff. Thanks George RR Martin. >.< Which brings me to my reasons. Because they’re the same reasons I stopped reading Game of Thrones. “But wait stargorger, why did you watch 18 episodes before quitting if you REALLY didn’t like it?!” Well, because honestly I love Japanese media and so I was hoping that Re: Zero’s author would pull a REALLY unexpected trick and go AGAINST the grain. Nope. Silly me. 1. It is so dark and realistic that it is unrealistic. This is kind of an overall critique. It alone wouldn’t make me stop watching/reading. But this is the root of the main problem(s). What do I mean by this? I mean the characters are such ASSHOLES, the monsters are so DEADLY and impervious to damage, the city is so CORRUPT, etc…that it’s RIDICULOUS. Remember my background of what makes good writing? Relatability and realism. And in order to be realistic, something has to speak to a truth that people can relate to in their daily lives. I’m sorry, but unless you are a child soldier living in Sudan, MOST people can’t really relate to this kind of darkness/grittiness. I have NEVER in my LIFE met so many assholes and just general bastards as seem to exist in modern fantasy worlds. Including Re: Zero. It’s dark and the characters are flawed to the point of being ridiculous. I’m sorry, but the reality (which authors seem to have forgotten, living in their dark little shacks under bridges or wherever), is that most REAL people are nice, normal folks. They act kindly towards strangers, or at least politely, they don’t want to hurt or kill anyone, and you won’t get raped/mugged/stabbed just walking down the street. Again, except in extreme circumstances. But somehow I doubt the author was writing specifically for those Sudanese child soldiers O.o Specifically in this episode: WTF with Puck? He’s going to destroy the world because Emilia died? Uh…ok. That’s really forced. Emilia’s been in trouble/dead/etc… before and suddenly the author pulls this out of his hat. *shrug* ok, he’s a spirit. What the hell. Sure. And are there really sadistic people like the Cultists? Sure. But Roswaal? Dude’s a creepy as fuck insane killer for no discernable reason, flies off the handle at the drop of a hat…have YOU ever met someone like that? If you have I suggest you call the cops or move to a safer country. Have we all met gruff asshole vendors like the apple-shop guy? Sure. But is that the ONLY type, or even the majority? No. So why pick him? Just to be dark and gritty. It’s too forced. Life is TOO miserable, too dark. I at least can’t relate to it. Which brings me to my next point. 2. …and it isn’t unrealistic enough. Especially when it comes to the characters. Subaru is the Everyman. So he’s supposed to be the character we cheer for, sympathize with, judge, and see reflections of ourselves in. But WTF, is everyone else a friggin alien? Subaru seems surrounded by absolute monsters and general selfish dickwads. I mean if everyone in this fantasy world is so distrusting, so ready to stab you if they don’t like the look of YOUR EYES, well damn Subaru, you’re screwed. And more specifically with interactions, and Subaru’s interactions. And here’s the main reason I’m done. Remember how even fantasy needs to be somewhat relatable? Reading the alien gibberish of a talking banana plant may be amusing for a few minutes but if we can’t understand or relate we won’t care. I have spent the entirety of this show trying desperately to determine WHAT THE FUCK is wrong with Subaru. And no, I don’t mean “he’s such a dick!” I mean, everyone ELSE seems to think he is. Why? The author is clearly trying to get across some point (or I sure hope he is). But I can’t comprehend it at all. And I’m pretty sure it’s not cultural…I lived in Japan for a couple years and have asked my Japanese friends to explain the show…they don’t get it either. One moment he’s being stabbed (punished by the hand of fate? Random chance? WHY?) when he goes to save Emilia, the next minute…he’s saving a bunch of random villagers? Why did THAT work out? So many questions. In some ways, yes, that is realistic. It mirrors the reality that sometimes life doesn’t make sense. I guess? But the problem is this: Fantasy is NOT realism. It must be realisTIC, but it is not realisM. In order for fantasy to be different from scifi, magical realism, etc…it has ALSO offer something more. Most people would say ‘an escape’. I prefer to say ‘an ideal’. Fantasy has to present some kind of idealization or ‘dream’ to strive for. In Re: Zero we know so little about the world and other characters that, clearly, that ‘escape’ can only come in the form of Subaru and what he does/experiences. He has to get better, become a hero, etc. And yay, this episode ends with him promising to do just that! But he isn’t, really. Because he’s so ‘realistic’ as to maintain this crucial character flaw that I’m tired of watching. It’s just unpleasant and emotionally draining. And what is that? Reason 3: 3. The writer’s ‘goal’ for Subaru is ‘selfishness’. Through all the episodes leading to now (I just finally realized it this episode), the author has been trying to deconstruct and build Subaru into a certain type of character. All the while he takes potshots at certain personality traits or cultural problems he deems problematic. All well and good. But remember #2? Fantasy has to go beyond pure realism and give us something to hope/strive for. In Re: Zero it’s Subaru. Except nobody should WANT to strive to be like him. Why? Well, because unless you’re blind, or selfish, or just stupid, you can see that Subaru’s behavior is destructive both to himself and to others, and he can’t get past it. At the root of it all is: Subaru is selfish. He’s too selfish. I don’t mean “he cares about himself”. I mean “he cares too little about others”. “Oh but wait he’s a hero! He loves Emilia! He saved Rem etc etc”. Yup. Yup that’s true. And WHY does he do/want those things? For himself. And this is why I said it is yes, partially because of the end of Rem/Subaru. It’s not that they aren’t together. It’s not that there’s no harem. It’s not that he turned her down. It’s that THAT was the author’s chance. That was the opportunity to NOT go down the Game of Thrones path. But nope. He skipped it. Subaru missed the chance. Because he’s selfish. He’s going to ‘be true to himself’ (oh fucking goody) and ‘tell it like it is’ and ‘be straight with her’ that he only ‘loves Emilia’. That’s bullshit. He doesn’t love Emilia. That’s a construct the author’s decided to force because he wants it that way. But really, NOTHING has occurred between Subaru and Emilia to create a love bond. Did he ‘love her at first sight’? Sure. But that’s not the same thing as true love. Sorry. And here I guess I’m getting into my own beliefs. A crush can lead to love. Infatuation can lead to love. Admiration, desire, lust, protection…those can all be part of and lead to love. But TRUE love is selfless. True love is willing to love even when it’s hard, even when the other person doesn’t love you back. And this episode DOES have true love. Rem clearly, truly loves Subaru. And if your heart doesn’t break for her, you’re either a child or a soulless monster. Nobody should have to go through the pain of unrequited true love. But Rem does. Why? Because Subaru is SELFISH. Fuck he’s so selfish I want to jump through the screen and stab him myself. I seriously hope he dies in the end. But nope, because the author will continue to steamroll his way towards the conclusion he wants without trying to get out of the rut. Subaru has been through hell and back. He’s died over and over. Trying to save MANY people (NOT just Emilia. In fact I’d kind of forgotten about her until the end of last episode). And all that time, Rem has been there. First suspicious (gets back to my first point…she’s fucking MURDERS HIM because he’s ‘SUSPICIOUS’?! Are you kidding me? So unrealistic. No person on earth does that normally.), and then lovingly. She’s there supporting and caring for him, especially in these last 5 episodes. What does Subaru do? Ignore her. Blindly continue on, selfishly, trying to make things work the way HE wants so he can have WHO he wants (Emilia). And at this point it’s really just ‘want’ because he knows absolutely nothing about her. Dude’s known her for a whole week at this point. Good for him. He’s hardly been with her for half that time. Most of the time he’s trying to save her (seriously dude, maybe she is SUPPOSED to die?) or being with Rem. If Subaru can hear Rem’s words, have that realization about what he’s gone through, stop being arrogant and realize his flaws and finite-ness, and STILL selfishly throw Rem aside to go woo Emilia…I’m sorry, but I hope they both choke and die. Rem’s going to remain brokenhearted so Subaru can get what he wants (without even knowing if it will work out). Is that being ‘true’ to himself? Yup. Sure is. And many many people on earth do that and act that way. Is it wrong? I dunno. It’s certainly realistic. But, and here’s my point again… It’s TOO REALISTIC. So realistic as to be un-swallowable. Sorry. That’s too bitter a pill for me to swallow. I’ve made mistakes like that in my past. I don’t relax on the couch watching anime to relive them. Fantasy needs to go beyond reality and provide an ideal and escape. Subaru has flatly failed. Which means the show has failed as a true fantasy. It’s now just ‘dark fantasy’. Ok fine. Not what I want to watch. My experience in life has been that there ARE real heroes. People really do behave selflessly, and it DOES have good effects. There are 'good guys' even in the midst of wars, murderers generally suffer horribly and then die, and most folks are nice normal people who want to be happy and want others to be happy. Seeing as stuff like Re: Zero seems so dead-set on destroying those happy ideas, I'm done. While I personally don't see Subaru turning down Rem as selfish or have a distaste for "dark fantasy" I do agree with pretty much all of analysis of the show. Same here. Author's not brilliant for inverting reward and punishment here. Nothing wrong with idealism every once in a while nor throwing in some "reality" also. Right now RE: Zero is a bit to obsessed with trying to be as gritty as possible. While Sub's despair as he put it was pretty relateable as he described it in this episode it screwed it up with that "I'm going to be a hero" shit. Sure, I'm glad he chose not to give up on everything and try to find a way past all the BS he's going through but after 18 episodes and a big runaround it felt very "eh". We've seen this before in this very show as it is, we've seen this in the medium as it is as well. It puts a "twist" on things but really nothing new, which, I guess is unfair since many story elements from famous works can be swapped out to convey the same story. With that said I feel pretty 50/50 on whether this will even get a second season and honestly don't really care as it is for some reason. I want a season 2 based on the simple fact that someone told me that at one point in arc 4 Subaru finds out what happened in some of the timelines after he died. |

This episode hit me home. I actually thought like Subaru at one point in my life. A very inspirational episode where Subaru realizes what hes been doing and now is going to change things! 6/5. Also RIP Rem x Subaru, Rem is cuter and has done more for Subaru then Emilia, but whatever, doesn't make this anime any worse! Probably one of the most thought-out animes I've seen. |

Beautiful episode! that discussion between Rem and Subaru took like 90% of this episode but it was really worth it, I'm a bit sad that the Rem ship failed but I was expecting this anyways. Now I think it's time for the climax, hopefully there will be no more suffering for Subaru after this, I think what he went through was enough. I wonder how he'll feel about Puck from now on. |

Couldn't care less if he ends up with Rem, Ram, Rim, Emilia or White Whale... I like that there is a romance tone since it makes the story more believable but this isn't a romance show and the romance side is just not very interesting addition. Either way, this was the worst episode that I watched so far into any show. This is the first show that made me re-think if after watching almost 3/4 I should drop it. Also a first episode that made me care about visuals in a show - in a bad way. Puck became mindless script and stopped being a character for me, and I wouldn't be any happier if Subaru was on a mission to actually kill this self-centered time bomb. Subaru just out of nowhere acted like it's a first time talking to another person - love who ever you want, just be more...I don't know, just put like 5 seconds between rejection, telling that you love her superior and then asking her for help. Like 5 seconds, not that much - you can wait, right? This whole episode was just an iteration of everything that was already said and done - this kind of show shouldn't try do develop characters by hour long talks as most of it was due to story development and what actually happens. We knew Subaru wasn't a fan of himself, we knew that she loved him, we knew that he loved the elf. There was no character development - just going back to....zero? Like actually zero, the first episode zero. Surely all of your worries will go away and you will be able to change everything because you rejected a cute girl, yep. The only positive thing about this episode was that he said that he was always like that and always hated himself for being empty and doing nothing - nothing new sadly but still nice way to confirm what was already done. I wish I never seen this episode and went from 17 straight to 19 as I think that this episode will make me unable to enjoy the rest of the show, if this keeps up this will be the longest I watched show just to drop it. |

So he should be cut and bleed. His ice shards should be more easily avoided than not, by someone moving fast. While Puck himself is a very easy target, for being so large. Puck should be spending mana, generating that blizzard. I'd want a good explanation as to why this wouldn't be the case. But yeah, it made me angry to hear Puck saying he can destroy the world by himself. Perhaps it's because this fantasy world wasn't much to begin with. But this would mean that most of its inhabitants also weren't, in a way. Wouldn't be so quick to actually believe that, it was mentioned that there are 4 great spirits, and Reinhard also exists. |

Im just speculating here but im pretty sure that: Puck knows about Subarus die-and-repeat ability (he always conveniently appears to subaru when shit hit the fan and kills him, happened all 3 last times iirc) Therefore by "ending the world" he was referring to the world that just went down the hill and gets destroyed by Subaru rewinding the time Puck is not almighty, didnt he even struggled in the fight against the woman with the guts fetish because he ran out of mana? |

Although I can understand the criticism people have for the show, I can't fathom why people are so hell bent on disliking the show simply because their 'best girl' was rejected. Is that really any reason to dislike the show? Also has Subaru even gone as far as saying that he didn't have any feelings for Rem? |

I cannot believe everyone is arguing and confused over such a basic romance situation...My God, does ANYONE on this board know how ACTUAL emotions function? Has everyone been in front of their computers their whole lives learning of relationships only through anime? I can understand criticism, but this is just immature. |

I can imagine so many ways in which Puck would be placed in a disadvantage, combat-wise. Magic should make this all possible, no matter the realism. Puck has flesh, right? So he should be cut and bleed. His ice shards should be more easily avoided than not, by someone moving fast. While Puck himself is a very easy target, for being so large. Awesome episode!!! My second favorite of the series so far! 17 mins of straight dialogue and it was entirely engaging. The transgression of Subaru's state o f mind in just a single episode was masterful in my opinion. The way his emotions seem to stabilize little by little every time he retorts and listens to Rem was amazing! Had never been a complete supporter of the RemxSubaru ship , but I was fully on board with it by the end of the episode !(Only to have the ship literally seconds later :P) |

Fappa said: Well now the audience will pretty much split in two camps. Those people that act more immature than the character they claim to be immaturity himself by hanging themselves up on the fact that their personal ship doesn't sail. And then there is the group of people that acknowledge the symbolic of this entire scene and respect Subaru for being straight and honest about his emotional state which let's be honest is not something we see everyday. That aside, anything else than still loving Emilia would have been weird and unrealistic. Feelings don't change that fast and nor are we in any place to judge a character for his choice. The face expressions and the body expressions as well as the voice acting were absolutely beautiful this episode. They adapted this chapter "From Zero" so well, I could read along in my own copy and couldn't really spot any differences. It's like they put the entire chapter word by word into anime form. You nailed it. Amazing episode because it was a realization of feelings and unpacking of their characters. It didn't end the happy way with Subaru switching his love to Rem, and it may be good it didnt go that way (as much I personally wanted it to go that way). I think what Rem and Subaru accomplished this episode was on an whole other level of excellence. |

fcking 90% of this thread is about hating Subaru because he rejected Rem, like WTF people? romance isnt the main plot in this series, if you want a full on romance going for who's the best waifu for the said character go to Nisekoi. Dont get all salty at something that wasnt meant to be, for the people complaining about why Emilia doesnt get much screen time whereas Rem does just wait for arc 4, thats her story (that is if the anime makes a 2nd season) arc 1-3 is for Subaru's development, dude literally said it this episode "From here on, starting from Zero, Natsuki Subaru's story, My life in another world starts here, From Zero " basically everything up until now was only the fcking prologue, from here on out starts the real shiz! |

I was getting a bit tired of Subarus shit lately, but this was an excelent episode considering it was mostly dialogue. Looking forward to next week again. |

For anyone who hates Subaru, Rem hates you more. This episode was so emotional and caused my chest to tighten. I was disheartened to hear Subaru tell Rem that he loves Emilia after all of that but at the same time, I would've lost a little respect for him if he had changed his mind. And besides, Rem has always loved the Subaru that loves Emilia. I'm so relieved though. . . I can't wait for time to move forward again. |

To be honest, I don't give a single fuck about Rem, and never did. I've always, always thought Emilia>Rem, and still do. But even I found it mildly weird when Subaru rejected her. This is because we've been shown so much stuff with Rem so far, with Rem being there for him, with Subaru just all around spending a lot of time on solving her problems on the second arc, and basically a bigger exposure of scenes with Rem that Emilia is inevitably overshadowed. Naturally, there are more Rem fans because there has been a substantial focus on Rem. Meanwhile, Emilia's scenes are few and far in between. Subaru spends more time solving problems (or being with Rem for plot-related reasons) than actually interacting with Emilia, and even when he DOES interact with Emilia, some interactions get skipped out of the show as if they're nothing (DAT DATE) and the last ones halted progress in their relationship more than anything, so this is just a matter of people barely having anything to work with when it comes to liking Emilia. We can barely love Emilia like Subaru does, or at least feel invested in his love because we aren't shown enough of Emilia to justify it. Subaru and Emilia just don't have that many conversations throughout the show, and Emilia herself doesn't get any actual focus beyond being the driving force of Subaru. Emilia's fine as a driving force, but it isn't enough to JUST see her as a driving force, and not just her in general. Emilia's honestly just as good a character as Rem, but the show itself is just not giving her any focus so naturally, the people watching aren't gonna focus on Emilia because to the show, she isn't important enough to have that much screentime: if that's the impression one gets, then it's obvious that instead of the mostly neglected love interest, people are gonna focus on Rem, who consistently gets screentime the moment she's introduced. By now, I have a stronger impression of Rem than I do Emilia. Emilia doesn't have a strong enough presence in the show to justify anyone backing her at this point, which is why I feel the show is failing to sell Emilia to us as Subaru's driving force. Emilia's a really nice character, and I like her a lot, but by what I've been presented, if Rem were more of an interesting character to me, I really would've stopped caring about Emilia because it just seems like the show itself doesn't care about her. Subaru might, but the story doesn't. And that's the whole issue. If Emilia had more of a presence, I would bet there would be more people supporting her. Subaru's rejection would've honestly been more heartwrenching if Emilia had more focus, because then you'd be able to right away understand Subaru without needing to just logically and dryly think "Well, yeah, he's always liked Emilia..."; you'd be reminded of their times together to back his words. Unfortunately, there weren't that many, so when I heard him say he liked Emilia, I felt nothing but "I guess it'd suck to set the RemxSubaru pairing here". The line itself was very simply conveyed (and I understand that was the point since it's supposed to sink in, but it had the opposite effect on me), and it elicited no emotions from me. From the viewpoint of the show, it just seemed shallow. I seriously wonder if the original author or the director just don't like Emilia. |
