Reincarnation/Transportation to another world light novels usually have the main character in a good position to see this new world and learn magic and becomes super/uber/OP please nerf archmage genius. Cue a training montage into adulthood without questioning human flaws and there you have a badass.

Re:Zero crushed this kind of tropes, violently and brutally. There is a reason why I made a Madoka link. No natural advantage over anyone, sadistically traumatic trump card and barely any time to rest. Instead of having the easy life, Subaru is thrown into a horror show in which he loses his composure and expose the worst traits of his character. His ego, his stubbornness, and ultimately, his lack of confidence and experience.

There is the deconstruction. Episode 18 made Subaru spit out the inner feelings of the modern self-hating NEET, in limbo between the facsimile childcare facilities we call school and the unforgiving reality.

The early dialogue between Subaru and Rem show it well. Subaru bitterly swallows his ego and wants to run away, and Rem talks about their eventual future. Subaru wanted to take action in order to show his resolve, while Rem is much more down-to-earth. In a way, Subaru is the same as the archetypal spoiled noble brat.

Hell, Subaru could be Joffrey in ASOIAF if Joffrey was cool and had redeeming qualities.

The fact the author took the audience surrogate, and showed the inner heart of the majority of his reader demographic was gutsy of him.

However, what was even more impressive, was that the author managed both a deconstruction of the genre and the reconstruction of it in the same episode. While Subaru exposed his feelings, Rem told him how awesome she felt he was. A person with horrible self-esteem can nonetheless be a great person.

You can also see the author's personal touch in the way the confession ended up. The two people confessed at the same time, one to the other and the other to someone else. However, Rem felt in love with the Subaru who is in love with Emilia, and Subaru, who is in love with Emilia, doesn't refuse or accept Rem's feelings, but it might be argued that he tries to reciprocate or feel worthy of her love by behaving the way he knows she loves him.

The SS Rem did not sink, but joined the SS Subaru in his armada to conquer the SS Emilia. Though I feel Rem can easily be awarded the Waifu award for her powerful character and ever-reliable support in the last episodes, I don't feel salty about it. The situation could have been left unsaid, and it would have been a lot more unsatisfying.

+1 my sentiments exactly like i said previously but you covered it brilliantly. This is really important, much more than whatever shipping that is taking place.

Why is everyone not asking the most important question: Where can I get the OST while they were talking damm it! sounded like Rem's seiyuu who was singing it! Please if anyone know where I can get that!

No, that's not correct.

エミリアが好きだ。
"Emiria ga suki da"

This saying "Emilia is the one I like". He's specifically targeting "Emilia" as the one he's interested in by using the particle "ga". This is makes the equivalent of basically telling Rem "No, EMILIA is the one I like, not you." The reason it's translated to "I love emilia" is because it gets that point across to readers quickly. The "ga" particle is not easily translated into English, it literally needs to be explained.

Secondly, there is no "lu" in japanese, there no "R's" at all. The verb you are searching for is:

愛してる
"Aishiteru”

The Japanese rarely say they "love" things, it's much, much more common to say "like". "Suki" (like) and "Daisuki" (literally meaning big like) are commonly switched with the word "love" in translations for this reason.

Re; Zero takes an idea that many people fantasize about (escaping their problems by living in an idealized fantasy-game world) and demonstrates just how terrifying it would be if a living, breathing human being actually experienced it (the show's central conceit of "Return by Death" is a brilliant display of how inhumane the literal application of video game mechanics to real people can be). Subaru wasted away his existence before coming to this strange place, and the consequences of that lifestyle have asserted themselves over and over, exacerbated rather then remedied by this new world.

And yet, in the same breath that Re: Zero condemns Subaru and his ilk, it reaffirms them. This is done via Rem, of course. Her insistence on highlighting Subaru's positive qualities, the ones that inspired her love, even in the face of his raw expression of self-hatred, is the narrative's own way of acknowledging the heroic potential of people like Subaru. It's not Subaru's grand gestures that endear him to Rem, a direct rebuttal to the popular LN notion that it is grandiose powers and godly capabilities that define one's heroism and personal achievement. It's the small things that make Subaru human that point to the best of him, that confirm his essential goodness. Subaru is severely flawed, but he is not without redeeming qualities, and so he cannot be the filth that he claims to be.

This story's writer made an interesting choice in writing an arc that showcased Subaru's best (Arc 2) before the one that displayed his worst (Arc 3). It's led some people to claim that Subaru randomly regressed to generate drama and pointless character development. The reality, however, is that everything wrong with Subaru was established subtly (perhaps too subtly) in the first two arcs. Subaru is a complex enough character, and the writing nuanced enough, that he can both be the hero we saw in the first two arcs and the coward we saw in this one without any fundamental contradiction. Different circumstances brought out different sides of him, and that it is his worst side that he must come to terms with now. More so, having seen the best of Subaru before seeing his worst, we the audience can agree with Rem's praise. It does not ring hollow, because we have seen it first-hand. And so, to return to the meta analysis, the narrative does not unilaterally declare shut-ins ruined. That would be cruel. It criticizes the bad while highlighting the good as a way of showing that they have the capacity and the potential to do better. And Subaru does.

I liked the visual parallel between the shot of his eyes this episode and the one that ended episode 15. People thought the one back then signified the arrival of hero Subaru, but really all it led to was more pathetic Subaru. The murderous gleam in his eyes did not indicate his awesomeness, it indicated his heedless greed and all-consuming desire for vengeance, which simply led to more destruction and mattered nothing without a genuine resolve to change. Contrast that to the plainer shot here, which is the real signifier of hero Subaru's arrival. They are clear and firm, a sign that Subaru has set his mind straight and is ready to truly move forward. From zero.

A last note: Rem is awesome and Subaru is extremely lucky to have her, but I'm somewhat disturbed by the (seemingly) popular notion that that somehow ENTITLES her to Subaru's love. Just because a person selflessly aids you does not mean that you are obligated to return the favor with love. That's exactly the problem with the White Knight complex, the idea of which Re; Zero has viciously attacked throughout this arc. For Subaru to suddenly change affections just because Rem's acts of kindness weigh heavier on a scale than Emilia's would be a pretty gross thematic betrayal of everything the show has stood for, and nonsensical because love is not a math problem. And Rem, by agreeing to help Subaru despite the knowledge that she is not the ultimate target of his affections, demonstrates the depth of her love in a way that her many confessions never could.

Great stuff, this.

My only quarrel with this post is the idea that people who shut themselves in are automatically NEETs by choice or that its somehow a bad thing to transport yourself into a different world through video games. You have to subject yourself to some kind of distractions in life in order to keep yourself going.

Nuances necessarily exist in real life.

You're absolutely right. I should have clarified that. I think Re; Zero is addressing only a specific subset of the Japanese NEET population, and I don't think it's criticizing video game escapism as a general concept as much it is criticizing the mindset that gave birth to "fantasy-video game" stories like SAO.

20 minutes of poorly written overblown lovey-dovey dialogue, best case scenario it's HS with a bad translation. Props to both VAs though, amazing performance. This reminds me of BrBa's episode 'Fly', except that had great dialogue to merit watching 40 minutes of the same scene.

I'm glad this marks the start of some actual plot advancement, so hopefully next week we should get a great episode!

When I heard that this episode was 1 minute longer, I was hoping for an extra minute of an emotional rollercoaster.

Wasn't disappointed. The only cringey part was after all that heart opening talk, Subaru still manages to say "I love Emellia"...

The episode was a Masterpiece. The voice acting was some of the best I have ever heard, add in FANTASTIC animation and beautiful scenes it truly was a work of Art. Subaru finally realizing that "Hey, I'm a neet what am i good for." Rem basically giving him a kick in the ass and supporting him when he needs it.

Puck...holy shit what a bad ass, and Beatelguese....wow what a pure piece of shit.

We also now know that the White Whale is Gluttony which should have been obvious.

People also hyped it up to be on Par or better then episode 7 and 15, and I think it did it justice, these are 3 of the best episodes easily.

Gotta nitpick here, sry but how is it "obvious" if you don't read the LN? All you know as an anime viewer, at first, is that it's a giant fucking white whale, labeled mabeast attracted to Subaru later on.

For comparison, it's not like those dogs from the Mansion arc were any kind of Sin so no, it's not obvious imo.

Even though it's purely dialogue, it's such a great episode! I love how Rem expressed her feeling to Subaru even though she knows she'll be rejected. Damn Subaru, I know you can't force to love someone, but what a rejection! Tbh, i don't see anything great with Emilia. Rem all the way!!

This is my theory on why Subaru is still in love with Rem despite everything she has done for him. I think the author made a brilliant move to deconstruct the whole idea of romance and take a piss on the way it is portrayed in Light novels, manga, anime, heck even live action stuff.

Ok let's begin (P.S I hope you all can criticise and discuss more on this later, looking forward to learning something I missed or whatever)

As shown in the op, Subaru's shadow is constantly looking at emilia but emilia's shadow isnt even tho her actual self is. This could mean that Subaru 'wants' her but she does not desire him (unrequited love). This is exactly what happens with Rem. The theme I think is about how small things can affect things so greatly. Think about it, why did rem fall so hard for subaru even tho we started off the show with her being the one who killed him? He only did one thing, he saved her (but not really because Roswaal did most of the work, he relied on Ram's power and he puts on this air of immaturity, calm and 'humor' to present his fake self as a 'hero').

Even after half-assing it, that decision changes rem incredibly and heals her sense of inferiority and self-hate. This is why she loves him. Subaru loves emilia purely because of one event: she saves him in a back alley. But more importantly her existence gave him a purpose when he just became stranded in an entirely different world - to help her find her isignia and later to protect her from death. Her selfless act, pure-hearted naiveness are what healed subaru of his self-hating nature (the way he used to be before he was summoned to the world - being a shut-in neet who rejected his parents and his own life).

Both of them feel this sense of irredeemable gratitude to their respective love interests, that is hard to just shake off despite everything thats happened (Rem's confession and emilia's rejection of subaru). More importantly, even tho Subaru doesn't love rem in the way we understand it, can you actually say he doesnt care for her. Absolutely not, that's absurd (refer episode 15 pls). The point of this show isnt about romance or waifus, it handles the feelings of romance in a very real and mature way.
Love is really possesion, it isnt synonymous with caring or non-malice. To go even deeper, Betelguese refers to the witches power has love 'Why are you so loved subaru? aka 'why do you have the witches scent'. The hands reach out and possess, capture subaru from his death and force him to relive events again and again. So to some it all up, the reason why Subaru is still in love with emilia is purely because he desires her for what she did for him. It isnt subaru rejecting rem because he doesnt like her or doesnt think she is worthy of him or cant see her as a love interest, its subaru chasing after his desires (not looking for potential love interests lol).
