What the hell is it with the word "protect" in anime? I swear I haven't watched a single series that didn't have characters spamming this word in every occasion imaginable.

If you're tired of it, you can always watch Utsu Musume Sayuri, there aren't any words like that, trust me

Non-Non Biyori and Yama no Susume work too, I've never heard that word IIRC in those two shows

I'm pretty sure Darker Than Black, Death Note or Detroit Metal City (They're on your watch list) doesn't have "protect" in it.

The theme of protecting ya friends is very common in Shounen type anime (anime for kids) and I don't find anything wrong with that. It is a good moral value after all. The reason why it pisses people off because it's used very often that it becomes an annoyance. Good anime, like Gintama, have this as one of it's central themes but doesn't manage to annoy people. You might just have watched a ton of Shounen anime that mishandled the theme of protection.
“Humankind cannot gain anything without first giving something in return. To obtain, something of equal value must be lost. That is alchemy's first law of Equivalent Exchange. In those days, we really believed that to be the world's one, and only, truth. But the world isn't perfect, and the law is incomplete..." -Alphonse Elric

"Then and now, what I protect has never changed!" -Sakata Gintoki

I'll take anything like The Pet Girl of Sakurasou. Anything as good as that.

It is a very broad concept which almost everyone can relate with, sadly it is getting overused.

If you want to look at it in another light, it's also a "coming of age" kind of thing. As a person grows older, things will change. Their relationship with their childhood friend, the place they feel most comfortable in, the times they feel happiest, the person themselves with regards to their feelings about another person, etc.. As a result, the person may take action to keep it from changing, like in shounen anime, shoujo anime, slice of life anime, etc..

Like what someone said above, the need/want to protect someone/something is a feeling a lot of people can sympathize with, so it's used a lot, but the best anime employ it without having this theme blare at you in bright red letters.

It's so common especially when it comes to 'nakama power'.
But it's important to remember that a movie review is subjective;it only gives you one person's opinion.

It doesn't matter if you like LoGH,Monster etc.If you are a jobless or college/school dropout living in your mom basement, you are still an unintelligent loser. Taste in anime does not make you a better person. If elitist don't exist, casual pleb and shit taste also don't exist.

This is values or cultural dissonance at work. You see, gender roles in Japan are much more rigid than in other parts of the world. The "I'll protect you" line is usually used for less macho male characters suddenly stepping up as a man while it allows for a usually tough tomboyish girl to show her femininity by accepting that "protection."

Which can be really silly or weird when the female character is leagues more powerful than the guy.

I don't find it back. In the end, we all want our loved ones. It is normal for someone to say he wants to protect another (even if it's not life threatening)

I don't know if some MAL members are collectively retarded or they just don't pay any attention, but majority of anime I've watched is actually pretty far from shounen, and there's still a lot of "I will protect you" and "I will protect you too" going on even outside the label. Maybe people just aren't as "triggered" by that word, but heck, often it's said by female characters too, so it has little to do with gender roles (particularly in seinen).

Often the NATURE Of protection varies between shounen and seinen counterparts (not in all cases), but character still feel the need to declare it all over again.

This could also have something to do with translation, though I am pretty sure I've heard some form of "mamori" every time somebody said "protect".

romagia posted the most helpful reply in this regard, since I didn't know it was real an elaborate trope (kinda stupid of me). But I've seen it much more often in Japanese animation than I have in any other form of media. so far.

"Protection" is a very good song by Massive Attack.

It's a cultural thing, probably. I heard the atom bomb messed up their mentality. I heard their obsession to defend others may be rooted in that. They couldn't protect themselves from history's worst weapon.

I don't know, but I cringe everything I hear "I'll protect you," or "I have something to protect," or "I have to protect _____."

It's a cultural thing I'm sure, but as someone who doesn't like being "protected" in real life I can't stand this phrase. I'd rather it be unspoken, where the characters can say "I will protect you" in the actions they take rather than in the words they speak. In some anime characters say "I will protect you" and then somehow manage not to, die, or turn bad, and where does that leave the "to be protected?" Betrayed, I say.

So I dislike the phrase. A lot.

I most certainly will not jump in front of them, shout "I WILL PROTECT YOU!" and put on a dramatic face. Doing it is not the issue, but it sounds cheesy as fuck when you say it like anime characters do.

Doesn't it make sense for people to say they'll protect their loved ones if they mean it? Sometimes, you say good stuff to people you love to make them feel better. Oh sure, you might not like to be protected - but just because homosexual guys don't like sex with women doesn't mean it's bad for everyone.

In the Japanese culture to "protect" something means to take full responsibility for someone's well being, not only for that instance, but forever. There aren't many other declarations more powerful and definitive in the Japanese language. Same goes for "this is unforgivable". We can translate the words into English, but the meaning is different.

Settle down y'all. One of the things I love about anime is that it usually isn't senseless warmongering. I honestly can't think of a better reason to fight than to protect the ones you love from harm. Some anime spend too much time explaining themselves, but the concept itself is noble. We don't have the exact same threats in reality, but if your family or significant other were in danger I'm sure you'd dive into the fray to help them.

Thanks, that's actually helpful. If it's a cultural thing and has deeper meaning than the cheesy translation "I'll protect yoo!!11"

As I said, you probably have to be mentally challenged to think this is a shounen-only thing, and I hardly watch them anyway. In other news, read the friggin' thread before you comment. It's annoying when people suggest you to watch less shounen when you barely watch any to begin with, and it's annoying when they stack up replies like that without realizing somebody else wrote that shit already.

The only thing I am really bugged with is how it comes off as cheesy when translated (in subs) from Japanese, because it does not really sound like something you'd say that blatantly in so many instance, it sounds fake and melodramatic, at least from an English perspective.

But, I kinda see where it comes from, apparently it just translates awkwardly and seems to be better off in its original form/meaning.

There are many words that are common in Japanese and uncommon in English, and vice versa.

Usually a good subber can avoid making it too obvious, but in some shows especially more generic sub-par ones it can be pretty hard.

I was actually supposed to watch that anime, but I dropped it because I could not suspend disbelief of how the physics work in that world.

The latest offender I've seen this in is Monogatari series, though I didn't expect much from it o begin with (it's also totally a shounen anime).

I've only watched the first episode of Bakemonogatari (and the first 5 or so minutes of the second episode), so I wouldn't really know, but it does seem to be quite pretentious (art style, cinematography, direction, supposedly "witty" dialogue...). And this is coming from someone who almost never uses that word.

Nagi no Asukara was still very enjoyable though...
