I LOVED this episode!

The writers definitely knew what they were doing. Subaru has been broken down by his deaths throughout the last episodes, you can see how he loses his humor and charisma. He wants to stay alive yet help everyone, even though it risks his death, to the point where he can no longer put up the act. Kobayashi, Yuusuke (the voice actor for Subaru) also deserves a mention for his phenomenal job in the break down scene where you could feel the emotion Subaru had.

The characters truly depict human emotions, how in a certain situation the way someone would break down. The paranoia and constant fear, are shown with his twitches, he tries to put a mask on, in fear of death. The lap pillow scene was the most important in this episode because it acted as a "valve" both figuratively and literally :P. He was able to release his feelings in order to continue. I honestly believe if Rem didn't see this, he would have been killed that night.

Overall, I'm loving this show and I hope to be able to give it a 9 and a full review by episode 24!

Those bonding moments with Beatrice, the maids and specially Emilia were so nice, the lap pillow!!!

Can someone DM me if Subaru dies again in this arc and these moments will be forgotten or if he succeds in this life?

Thanks!

Best lap pillow ever! After all the misery, that scene truly took me aback. Finally, something good happened to Subaru (not to mention the lead he discovered).

Of course, the episode wouldn't be complete without the maid sisters:

She should've been aware that he could've been under pressure, for being considered a suspect from the first day he joined them.

But she didn't think it was too serious before this episode. She then couldn't ignore it.

What Subaru did was overact. Due to how nervous he became...

i remember you from MHA forum. I think the problem you have towards it is that you think it's too slow paced. 8 episodes in, and we've only been introduced to (finally) all the characters, and we got a glimpse of the antagonists in the end (not even the big boss yet!). From what has been shown so far, you think it's just a generic cliche shounen hero anime where it's hero vs villain and the heroes are always good and the villains are dumb as fuck. and there is no grey, only distinct black and white. Correct me if I'm wrong.
But this anime isn't like that. If you have the patience, keep watching it until season 2 (or read the manga). because 12 episodes aren't enough to show you the character development you seeked, nor how many shounen troupes this series has broken. This series is FAR from cliche. And is more than 1000 times better than shitty (in comparison) naruto.

The king has no descendants, I believe. That's why there's the King selection.

Not quite. All of the direct descents died mysteriously from some disease that spreaded throughout the palace a year before Subaru arrived in this world.

So it was only the insignia that acknowledged her, then. (As it did for Felt.)

Perhaps it's time to rewatch... (I had forgotten completely about Roswaal talking about an 'epidemic' having occurred in the castle...)

Obs.: The insignia is more specificaly, stated to be a 'touch stone' instead... Definitely rewatching sometime.

Such a good show. Easily the one I look forward to the most every week.

It just gets the strain and mental distress of Subaru perfectly. How someone would be so utterly strained and mentally exhausted after all he's been through and facing what's ahead. Good thing Emilia was there to help him just stop and relax, even for a few moments. Sometimes you do just need to vent and let it all out.

Best of luck to Subaru. Just clearing this situation this time around would be such a good thing for him. Able to take a few steps forward and check off another save point.

Yeah that's what I meant. The King has no (direct) descendants (left to become the heir of the throne because they all died out). That's why the kingdom has to select a new king.

Actually it was a common phrase when royalty died to say they are "gone missing". So I give the translator the benefit to think that he applied this here. Besides it often happens that the author uses little historical elements like that although this is a very little one.

The main character pisses me off a lot, especially in this episode. If this is their idea of realism and showing how that boy is afraid of another death, I don't want it. Seriously, the constant moaning and screaming at a girl who has no idea what's going on is ridiculous. These people don't know why you're acting like this, I don't see how you can start screaming at them about how afraid and so on you are, while you're crying and the whole mansion can hear you. Realism. That's not realism, that's "Look how annoying a character can behave and cry hysterically at people who didn't do anything. Look how he makes them think he's dumber than expected., while his purpose is the opposite."

That's not a spoiler. You're wrong again.

Guess you've missed it, but people wondered why Reinhard took Felt away with a shocked expression. He grabbed the arm where she was holding the 'insignia'. Then in the next episode, it was explained that the 'insignia' is actually a 'touch stone', that acknowledges one as candidate for the throne or something.

It became an easy guess, then - but not a sure one. (I'm not a source reader.)

Just...rewatch. It wasn't done subtly.

Again, its not stated in the story directly. We see reinhard grab Felt and next episode the insignia is explained as something that indicates you are acandidate for being a king. The uncertainty about Felt's story is one of things I enjoyed themost.

Tobe honest replacing"missing" with "dead" would destroy sense of that conversation.
How it is now:
- "They have gonne missing", "but everyone knows instead the truth they died from plague"
How it would be:
- "They died", "but everyone knows the truth - they died".

I Think the intent is quite clearly exactly what you are saying.

By the way, nothing would've become of Felt if she weren't special somehow. She'd have kept living in the slums (as Reinhard wouldn't have reported her this time).

She'd have zero potential. Her story would've ended there. Why? Because this is a realistic show... But this is just me saying.

Yeah, here's the convos relating to it for context sake:

Subaru clearly catches on enough to see himself as a suspicious and latter on actually talks about them having died out.

It fits Roswaal's portrayal so far for him to be coy and diplomatic about the death of entire royal family and frankly "Hey our entire royalty died out" is NOT something a government will ever openly state as to not cause panic. Thus the king is missing new one is selected and then along the way "Oh well I guess he died since he is still missing".

Why is everyone so hotheaded? cant they just chill and talk this out lol. But seriously though the characters are so annoying. How many times have Subaru died again? I lost count already. He seriously sucks at this thing called staying alive. The last part when he said he loves them is so cheesy. I probably made an ugly cringing face when he said that.

7 in total and guess what? He'll likely die more in the future for various reasons because that's part of premise of title. He's number of deaths really isn't important compared to circumstances behnd them anyway.

And who's being hotheaded here? Every single character except for Subaru (due to stress) was chill/normal.

No, No. The original web novel makes it explicit that the king was dead and also he has been known to be dead OFFICIALLY and PUBLICLY for the last 6 months.

Roswaal: "王が御隠れになった同時期に" (At the same time when the king passed away)

And, the meaning of 御隠れ : 身分の高い人、また目上の人が死ぬこと (death of someone of high status/rank, or someone who is of higher status than the speaker him/herself). Thus Roswaal's statement is not anything like an indirect implication, but a direct, straight-forward statement of the king having been dead.

Lastly, "around same them that the king went into hiding" is a mistranslation. To be sure, The literal meaning of the Chinese character, 隠of 御隠れ is 'to hide". But as a Japanese dictionary shows, 御隠れ means death of someone of high status, a kind of conventional round-about phrase to mean death.

EDIT: Furthermore, Here is how the conversation really goes on in the anime.

Roswaal: After all, Lugunica's king is currently not present.

Subaru is surprised and concerned.

Roswaal: There is no need to be concerned. Everyone is quite aware of the reality.

Subaru: Really? I expected a "Now that you know my secret, I can't let you leave here alive" thing.

Roswaal: Around the same time that king went into hiding, an epidemic began spreading through the castle! The king and his children are the last line.

To sum up,

Roswaal: The king is dead!
Subaru: What?
Roswaal: Don't be concerned. Everybody knows it.
Subaru: Thank god. I expected to hear something like "Now You've heard the top secret so you can't leave alive" from you
Roswaal: And an epidemic was spread and it killed all of his children around the same time the king was dead. As a result, the king and his children were all exterminated (根絶やし nedayashi)

Not everything has to be a direct translation. Most of cases direct translation is wooden crap.Adding flavor and characterization by taking liberties is good.

And this change fits both the setting and Roswaal's character. And it fits the tone of the rest of his dialogue in that scene.

Yes, huzai 不在(translated into missing in English Sub) also works in a somewhat similar way in this context. But I did not mention it because 御隠れ is an even more explicit expression than missing, as a Japanese dictionary entry of the word shows it.

Not everything has to be a direct translation. Most of cases direct translation is wooden crap.Adding flavor and characterization by taking liberties is good.

So, do you agree that Roswaal used an explicit, straight-forward and literal expression to mean "The King was dead" when he talked with Subaru, and replacing"missing" with "dead" would NOT destroy any sense of that conversation?

Subaru didn't have to use any inference, guess because Rowaaldo didn't use any subtle, implicit way of expression. Instead, Roswaal did LITERALLY refer to "death of the king (御隠れ Okakure)"
